Is it just me or are the Green Party becoming more and more irritating by the day?

Newgrange is more of a 19th century ‘reconstruction’ than a restoration.

Since Newgrange was restored in the 1960s I dont get your point?!?

loved the comment from the other article in the indo about how luas would halt traffic on O’Connell street every two and a half minutes as it crosses the street.

That would be like having traffic lights on the street then…

My main concern is what Bertie Ahern was talking about i.e. letting people build one-off housing whereever they wanted – which is the point of this thread. This is unsustainable development – any one with a bit of savvy knows this.

My concern is for the environment and the architecture of the country – the problem being that FF and their ilk are hell-bent on turning the entire country into one big housing estate with bunglows in between what we loosly call the cities.

We’ll miss the greenery when its gone.

Because I am originally from Dublin and you are from rural Ireland you seem to think that I am not entitled to a valid opinion – thats a very smug and conceited attitude to take.

Exactly we’re pissing away what makes tourists want to come here i.e. real Irish pubs (the ones with two taps – both guinness) and green landscapes (see Bertie Aherns lets build bunglows everywhere comments of 11/9/03).

Lets face it – who comes here to go to ‘Zanzibar’?

Or will tourist Ireland be found in the themepark for North County Dublin – ladies and Gentlemen, Faith & Begorrah – it’s Paddyworld

If you like standing around in a glorified warehouse, shouting to be heard over the noise of several hundred people in one open-plan, bare-walled space, and taking 20 minutes to get served at a very small bar, the Market Bar is for you.

Well you could be talking about any of the superpubs around town – all of which are as ghastly as the next. Why can you not have a consversation in a pub anymore – do we have to get deafened everywhere and since when do people want to stand for the whole night – after a long day at work there’s nothing I like more that standing for 5 hours. I used to think I got a sore throat from smokey bars but its actually from roaring at my friends to have a conversation with them. I say issue 100s of new licences with a cap on the size of the places and turn the musak down.

    Its official – I’m old

If they were to be legislated for the planning guidelines should stipulate that they are built as single entities and not with a Liffey Valley attached to them. Should reduce any ‘new town centre’ effect.

Exactly my point on loving europe – the two styles can coexist quite happily hypermarkets for the occasional “big shop” and then go to your local shops for the day to day goods. If you want a loaf of bread you don’t drive to your nearest tesco, you go to your local shops!

If things are planned properly hypermarkets can coexist quite merrily – lets face it the state could handle a few. As was previously mentioned its only the non-food sector that’s being targeted at the moment – what we need to ensure is that the IKEA over here charges the same as continental europe – the UK guys are being screwed price wise.

We have a perception in this country that we are the poor downtrodden micks who need protection from everything – answer we don’t. Competition is deparately needed in this market in practically every area. When Intel came in did we say “ah no these guys will corner all the IT skills in the Irish market” no. Why is Blanchardstown Lidl now the busiest in europe? Should wwe stop guinness domitating the stout market? We should be more like Continental europe and less like the UK (who is now America’s bitch – anyway)

Give me Carrefore! Give me IKEA! Adapt or die folks

but not everybody wants twee pine furniture – which seems to be the mass produced Irish stuff.

Learn to love Europe – it’s not that bad

I was at the Luas presentation as part of the DTI report when it was pretty much a done deal in terms of the lines planning

    The year 1990

    Completion 1995 at the latest

The delay – procrastination on the part of the government.

For particular attention – Mary O’Rourke

The government can move fast when it wants to – see the Albert Reynolds/Larry Goodman affair. If the will to do it was there it would be done.

Could people please read the article, the comments are attributed to the head of the RPA, i.e the people RESPONSIBLE.

Ah yes – but how did the letter become public… spin, spin, spin. Who is interested in – ahem – ‘derailing’ the project – yes the car lobby. Do not underestimate the power of PR

The car park on the liffey idea first materialsed in the 1930s and was to run between O’Connell and Gratten Bridges.

The only people who have made a mess of Luas are the govenrment – through their procrastination and general arsing about with the plan we could have had an integrated system up and running 6 years ago. They probably would have started 3 or 4 new lines of it by now. What this country needs is an infrastructure ministry and someone who will take full responsibility for a project. Not the fall guys in the RPA
