Pleasant streetscapes should be preserved and An Bord are the adjudicators of what is worth preserving to the exclusion of additional floorspace.

Does South King street count as a pleasant streetscape?

With the green centre on one side – which does not address the street and lets face it the Gaiety Centre and the recession designed Stock building are not pretty. Id say its a bit of a crock myself.

By all means preserve what is good and worth keeping

    Bad decision

I think the grounds that An Taisce put forward for not building this are misguided to say the least. “South King Street has a mixture of 19th and 20th century buildings, it retains a cohesion of scale which would be unbalanced by the proposed development”.

South King Street has 1 good building – the Gaiety itself – the rest ranges from standard through to dross (particularly the Gaiety centre itself) – The street itself is too narrow for the seven stories of the proposed building to have a detrimental effect on the streetscape. The current building is five storey with plant room on top so I don’t beilieve the height argument one iota.

Im starting to think that An Taisce will not be happy until the replacement for the Gaiety Centre is a two storey red brick box like the recession built “stock” kitchen shop on the corner.

Lafferty Design & Development were the architects – I believe they also designed the logos/branding for the shop as well

Donnybrook fair is a pretty cool shop – nice shelves, good interior design – I’ll look for the architects name next time I’m around there

I does as it allows for better circulation of air at pitch level – vital for good grass health

Anyone think an underpass under the green is an idea – it works on the continent

There is a building called Wentworth on Eblana Villas (Junction next to the Spar on Hogan Place) – hope that helps a bit

I just think its one of those little harmless quirky things that make us Irish – so what if it isn’t aesthetically pleasing its part of Dublin. And just like the happy ring house and the why go bald sign it isn’t to everyones taste (no matter what it represents to the individual) it’s not the worst. We should not do away with things just because they are not in vogue but should have reminders of past times (and tastes) throughout the city.

I’d be more concerned about the crappy shops and gangs of junkies on the street than a (tiny) statue.

what a load of nonsense. It’s another attempt by the Catholic fascist majority to shove their nonsensical beliefs down our throats

What a lovely tolerant place we live in…

Actually the statue was the only thing left from the bombardment of a building during the civil war and as it remained unscated (bit of a mirilce considering the state of the building) it was re-erected in the middle of some trees at the top of the street.

It’s nice and its harmless so leave it alone.

    Stop planning and start building.

If the government stopped planning and started building infrastructure would not take half as long to build. Why consultants are employed over and over and over again to come up with minor alterations to each others plabns is beyond me. We have people in the departments capable of drawing up plans -if these plans are of no use they should be sacked, likewise once a plan has been drawn up (I’m thinking DTI plan here) why is it necessary to fuck about with it at a cost of millions with the consultants (thus continually delaying everything leading to cost inflation )rather than build it to the plans.

Useless shagging government – go build things now not keep reselling the same pig in a poke.

From The Indo’s report on the new Facade for the Royal Dublin Hotel:

“The syncopated rhythm of large and small apertures across the facade echoes the shifted juxtaposition of windows seen across party wall lines in Dublin’s Georgian streetscapes,” Albert Noonan of Ashlin Coleman explains.

Clear and concise wouldn’t you say!

I recon Harcourt Street will be an oasis of tranquility at the weekends with just the Luas and the bus lane. Should be an attraction in itself
