ParticipantCan anyone else visualise a ‘Raiders of the lost Ark’ style warehouse….

ParticipantIf the above criteria were available I’d leap at the chance at moving back (as a lot of my neighbours have said)

ParticipantThe answer is simple. As one who has essentially been forced out of my home town and having an approx 100 mile round commute each day. We need supplies of large (1,100 sq ft+) apartments that are (1) family friendly (2) reasonably priced (3) non – investor filled. In this was living communities could be built within the city.
The majority of people now in the outer suburbs are there for economic rather than quality of life reasons (in what way is a 3 hour round trip quality?). If you want something other than a shoebox at a reasonable price you have to commute long distance.

ParticipantI aways wondered why it was called the Macken St bridge, as it goes from Cardiff Lane to Guild St.
It does go to Macken Street – Guild Street is the one further back towards the Customs House (Citibank is on the corner)

ParticipantI think it had to come down before it fell down – this canopy was in rag order for the last few years

ParticipantAh yes, but what of the view from the Cricket Pitch in Trinity to Nassau Street. Even with The Setanta Centre et al this is a pleasing view. And the view from Kildare Street across the pitch would be lost too. I think this streetscape needs to be preserved, even to prevent TCD becoming more insular and inward looking!

ParticipantIf the Metro was extended from Swords to Balbriggan (Could be done overland as there is bugger all out there you could connect it to the Northern line so people travelling to the airport from the North (if you look at the long term car park note the amount of yellow reg cars) and those in North County Dublin, Meath and Louth (myself included) could change trains to get to the airport.
Could also open up development land in North Co. Dublin. We need lines to link up with existing ones, not just terminate on its own.

ParticipantThere are/were plans to reskin the EBS building (who are moving out) and install a large retail element there. The facade apeared to be made of multi-coloured stone and glass whilst retaining the old paradiso restaurant section (the portland stone bit between the two boxes). I only saw a hand drawing of this on a brochure for about 20 seconds so alas I know no more about it.

ParticipantBloody attachment wouldnt attach

ParticipantThere was a clever argument put forward about bypassing the N2 and N3 with a road in between them. and run a spur to kells and a spur to the Derry road closer to the border to reconnect there. See the map attached for a rough idea about what was proposed. This plan would have missed all the contentious sites.
There would be spur roads off to towns like Navan etc along the way. It seemed to make sense to me

ParticipantOn the trains between belfast and dublin can you smoke til the border then is it no smoking the rest of the way? Its probably only a matter of time before the ban spreads to the britons
There has always been a smoking ban on the enterprise both north & south of the border. And the last train on a Friday (8:45pm) from Connolly always runs on time, but then something goes arseways at Howth Junction. A former neighbour of mine was trapped on the malahide viaduct on an enterprise for 1.5 hours before anarchy practically broke out and people opened the doors to walk back to Malahide station

ParticipantI think the issue from the angle of the night shot being out of scale with the Gaiety nest door is that the section of the Gaiety adjoining the site is only two storey’s high. Anything taller than that is going to look out of scale with the Gaiety. But should this be allowed to dictate the scale of the redevelopment?

Participantsurely discering in terms of beer – you have to be these days!;)

ParticipantA lot of the sniping comes from snobs.
I think everybody agrees that the major flaw here is the face that the centre does not address the street with proper shopfronts – don’t think thats a snobby thing to say.
Pedant spot: it has two entrances on Sth King street

ParticipantA new school of traffic design says we should get rid of stop signs and red lights and let cars, bikes and people mingle together. It sounds insane, but it works
Lets not – it’ll frusrtate everyone + we ignore regulations over here anyway (just try walking from Stephen’s Green to Henry Street and see how pedestrians, bikes buses and cars interact)
Rory W
ParticipantI don’t understand the argument.
Carlilie Pier was never public property – when the terminal was open you couldn’t just wander into it unless you had a ticket for the boat. Since the terminal closed you cannot wander into a decaying shed.
Just what sort of a public amenity is/was it?
Rory W
ParticipantDunsink?
Whilst I approve of contemporary design (not these ones though) – I think this was the wrong locations for these. Should have gone for something that would have fitted in with the bridge’s architecture. More metal (perhaps copper – which would look great when it weathered).
The design of these looks like a filled in bus shelter and the flagpoles only add to the clutter
in a word – crap
Rory W
Participantthat is truely fucking awful
Rory W
ParticipantI’m not impressed with the design – it looks like the borg have crash landed there. Not as distinctive as the armadillo or the erotic gherkin for that matter. Also I feel that this design will date badly. Maybe it’ll be better in the flesh though.
Like the hotel!
