ParticipantTo paraphrase the Simpsons Comic Book Guy ” Worst ..idea..ever”
Plenty of people will have a view over the dock when Treasury build their developments there as will those who buy in the old Odlums Mill when thats done. I love seeing the dock every day as I pass on the Dart on the way to and from work.
Now if they put a boardwalk along the East side of it from Ringsend Bridge to Barrow St Dart Stn and a few amenities along it that might help open it up – a great Sun trap during the summer

ParticipantI remember it being quite tall actually for the area, not as tall as the buildings currently there but tall none the less. Larry Goodman’s company I think?

Good news about Fingal – have a feeling it just may have been sold off a few years ago, perhaps as part of the Carlton wrangling, with a lease-back arrangement – not sure though.
It was bought by the McGettigan family (of Baggott Inn fame) a few years ago and was being rented to fingal for a while until their new place in Swords was finished – don’t think its changed hands since then though

ParticipantNo matter what you say the events of 1916 led directly to the foundations of the independent state that we enjoy living in today and that should be celebrated. By all, not just the few.

ParticipantIt’s going to be Dunnes New HQ building – not sure about what retail element is on the ground floor though

ParticipantAer Lingus would only be taking a fraction of the space being developed here. All this talk of they don’t need it is erronious – they’re not taking all of it.
It’s being developed on the SITE of the present building – by some people’s reading it’s the equivalent of wondering why the Port and Docks Board need so much space at Spencer Dock!

ParticipantIts only right that 1916 is reclaimed by the 90 odd% of the voters in this country who wouldnt touch Sinn Fein with a bargepole. Hopefully now the tricolour can be reclaimed on election result days – the flag belongs to everyone not just SF who wave it when they win and begrudge (as they did to an FG candidate) when someone else does.

ParticipantIf you want tickets join a club (one of the ones that doesn’t sell them to a corporate) and you’ll get tickets most of the time – if not go to some of the pubs and ask does anyone have a spare ticket. Anyone (genuine fan) with a spare will usually sell it face value. I’ve got tickets like that on plenty of occasions and never payed over face for them.
But can you imagine Ireland V Scotland, Wales and Italy in the 6 nations in Croke park – the place will look half deserted – I think 50K is an OK size for Lansdowne

if Croker can handle all the games while Lansdowne is being rebuilt then it clearly is deeemd capable of handling all whether or not Lansdowne is rebuilt. Surely this is self evident. The reason we are talking about building a second stadium is not because Croke park can’t host all the games required.
Look get over the fact that “shock horror” Dublin can handle two national stadia. There is enough business to keep them both going at the moment, what’s going to change when the new Lansdowne is built.
I hate this 1980s attitude of this country some times, oh dont build the IFSC it’ll be a white elephant, don’t build the luas it’ll be a white elephant, don’t build the Spire it doesn’t do anything – dig yourself out of your provincial arses and look to the future folks …

Now that we know that the point(!!) of the Tower of Light is to draw the viewers gaze skywards perhaps once again im being a phillistine if I suggest that the middle of a very busy pedestrian crossing is not exactly an ideal location for such a gaze inducing device, however artistic it may be.
Blame those crazy bastards back in 1806 for building the Nelson Pillar there.
Sorry but has the health and safety brigade been let run loose in here? Cities have things that catch your eye, sad that the accident was, at the end of the day isn’t the city better to have things of interest in it. All this talk of underpasses etc is a nonsense – we need more pedestrian movement on O’Connell St not less, you may as well suggest a pedestrian bridge while you’re at it, nobody will use that either!!!
Also how often on the continent have you been on a street where you are not 100% sure where the kerb was due to the street being cobbled? Were you killed? Probably not. Did you contact the mayor of Paris’ office when you were distracted by seeing the light on top of the eifel tower? No. All this talk is nonsense and an utter overaction

ParticipantIf they dont use bins for litter, what makes you think they’ll use one of them?

ParticipantSo one of the UK’s largest festival is taking place in TCD, reckon it’s time they hoisted the Union Flag over College Green again!!!

Dublin doesn’t need tall buildings.
Since Dublin now streches from Drogheda to Gorey and as far inland as Laois – yes it does need tall buildings in the centre if only to slow the sprawl

ParticipantPublicans can fuck off as far as I’m concerned – they complain when liberalisation of the licences is proposed, get the cafe bar thing off the agenda. And then have the gall to complain that there aren’t enough pubs! The mind boggles
Oh and as Eddie Hobbs pointed out the other night Dublin has 35% of the population and 9% of the pubs – no wonder prices are at a premium for licences.
This is the fault of the publicans – they made their bed let them lie in it!
Rory W
ParticipantIndeed Morlan – just walk through the door into the public office of the vicorian facade of the Ulster Bank to discover the horror within, which streches into the modern section seemlessly

ParticipantAh don’t be greedy lads!!!
Attached is a revised image of the development

I really wonder if Drogheda’s planning department gave any thought to traffic disruption. The area is already a disaster in relation to traffic flow. There will be mayhem when SHE is opened in November. Surely there were better sites available for this project.
Given the fact it is within walking distance (actual walking distance not estate agent walking distance) from the existing town centre is surely a good site, it can contribute to the town day and night (hotel, cinema, riverside bars, restaurants, apartments etc) and not be stuck in some godforsaken road on the outskirts of the town like Liffey Valley which contributes a cinema after dark and thats it. Sure there will probably be some delays accessing the centre by car in November, but probably no worse than getting into the car parks on Dyer St at present.

Both concoctions in the photo……the tower on th right and the cube on the left.
Lets say when the Custom House was first built in an empty environment it had a good aesthetic impact . These newer buildings don’t have that certain appeal…..given too that the tower has height.
The “cube on the left” is already there as the waterways interpretive centre – I believe it won awards when constructed during the 1990s. The tower is the proposed treasury project – I don’t think it’s that bad at all
