Am very interested in the pedestrian ingress/egress arrangements. I’ve seen the model but I’d love to see precisely how people will interface with the DART station. I hope we’ll have completely eliminated having fans walking across the tracks.

Well the Irish sure know how to take themselves down. A fantastic, world-class stadium to anyone’s eyes – yet all anyone here can do is run it down because a few % of seats might have a roofing pole running 5 metres above your head – and for some reason this makes the entire project, the phenomenal transformation, moot.

I was at the Shelbourne races last night where there is a wonderful view of the pearl-like grounds in the distance, glittering in the sunset – and we all agreed how fabulous it looked and was a credit to the nation.

Pity none of you are able to recognise this…

I like its sheer power and size. The view from Wolfe Tone Quay going over the Liffey is awe-inspiring; it towers over the shops and pubs of Parkgate St, a properly scaled urban building with small-town cottages nestling at its feet.

I really cant see why we shouldnt copy the London signs, they are brilliant and clear and always visible, in most cases you find it difficult to identify what street you are on in Dublin. Dublin City COuncil should get on to Boris in London and get some of those street signs.

The idea that the solution to a problem is to copy what someone else did is rubbish. We have a system, we just don’t apply it correctly. Let’s apply it correctly, fill in missing signs, and then we’ll be doing OK. No need for new designs. Irish is already given prominence on Dublin street signage (it appears first), there is no need to make any changes.

Am totally shocked at this Gaelgoir stunt. They are a minority and are forcing their views on the rest of us. This is an English speaking country and there is a long history of that language being given greater prominence. I don’t agree with the new regulations that give greater prominence to Irish – it is a minority language.

Not that this is relevant to the O’Connell St stunt. It doesn’t give them any legitimacy. It’s littering, vandalism and shows a reckless disregard for heritage.

On a side note the lightning conductor should really be moved off the sign too.

I have to say, there was an awful lot of fannying around on the quays over the last two plus years. Now the thing is here it seems a shame it’s going to be next year before it’s in place and open.

Apparently it will be open in November.

Perhaps we should take the barge on a nationwide tour first as part of balanced regional development.

    Haha!

Yes Smithfield is a wasteland, lived there for 2 years 2005-2007. In fact me and my mates were among the first people to move into the Smithfield Market apartments. Couldn’t wait to leave by the end.

    Problems
    – Far too much retail space provided considering the area is not a major destination. The amount of basement parking aims for thousands upon thousands of shoppers which never materialised.
    – Major ASB problem in the area. I witnessed many assults and muggings in my time there. Very unsafe at night. Cops were busting skangers practically on a daily basis.
    – Alcoholic treatment centre brings many drunks to the seating area at the south of the square near the Luas.
    – Criminal Court brought lots of gougers to the square during the day, though only during working hours of course
    – Still a large amount of dereliction, including on the square itself.
    – Poor finish to the area – cobblestones not reset down near the Luas and just tarmaced over, braziers never lit anymore, lots of litter.
    – Horse market. This is more of a neutral though, as although it brought vast quantities of droppings and litter and noise into the area, I know that it’s a tourist draw, and it was only once a month.
    – Celtic Tiger feel to the new buildings. Reads was very swanky and expensive, same for Fresh, and the gym under the hotel. Nothing for anyone on a budget that’s for sure. Gentrification in its purest form.

    Pluses
    – Lighthouse cinema: only opened recently but was very impressed, lovely place.
    – Jameson distillery is worth a look.
    – Cobblestone pub is a gem
    – Close to pleasant Stoneybatter area
    – Luas is a godsend
    – Square and braziers are impressive

Am amazed at the level of revulsion towards the NCC. It doesn’t look pink to me in my photos of it, more like peach. The blank side wall is broken up by the horizontal and vertical lines and the impact from the front is nothing short of stunning. In any case, the side wall is not visible either from the front or when the building is viewed at a distance from a river bridge.

Yes its a “box to hold conventions”, but its a lovley box. Refined, elegant and wonderfully composed.

That building is horrific – at night, it is so bright it puts the rest of the city in shadow, and during the day it looks like an air vent.

That horrendous building looks like a sandcrawler from Star Wars. A sandcrawler to our R2D2!

So we’re back to 2009. That makes sense if it shows up here in May – because then it could not possibly take until 2011 to finish.

Accorcing to SkyScrapernews It is to be 122m in height. So yes if it were built it would be the tallest in Dublin. For a while at least.(Actually if it were built it would be for an age unfortunately)haha

122m in a suburb would be enough to kill it stone dead.

It would look very dramatic from the M50 at night though.

I remember the original protest well and it’s amusing to think about considering that we totally failed to build ANY highrise buildings in the area whatsoever.
