forgive my petulance , but i don’t think you fully apreciate the scale of this picture. The lower section is twice the height of the new irishtimes building. the taller section is a bit higher that liberty hall, but has substantially more bulk. Notice how the design of the taller section tries to pretend is is only 11/12 storeys high , when it is infact double / triple that number.
I have seen old three storey buildings abutted by skyscrapers in yankee land, the result is not pretty. one particular small church beside an office block in boston springs to mind.
Hopefully the housing market will collapse before what is in my opinion liberties part deux is put upon us.
A boyle i hope you are not serious that you prefer to see our housing market collapse 😮 , probably the economy would follow, than to see this building go up???? this is not a war a boyle! with victory at any cost
we need offices we need apartments the discussion is what kind of buildings they will be housed in
also while i’m here if the taller section is a bit higher than liberty hall
how could it be double or treble 11/12 floors high?paul h
Participantfrom that render it looks about 12/13 floors but if your saying that its double or triple then thats a whole different story. way too bulky if thats the case
paul h
ParticipantI think if we are going anyway tall in dublin it has to be slender, minimise impact
our narrow streets are not able to absorb relatively big bulky blocks
a smaller footprint with a taller tower could work better
i quite like the contrast of old and new with the bar in frontpaul h

Maybe it’s possible to have a town with no urban area at all, just a collection of housing estates, retail and office parks and industrial estates. Does this exist already in Ireland?
could this describe tallaght also??
(although i’ve heard there is a lot of development in and around ‘the square’)
sprawling estates with no main street or real centre (excluding a shopping mall)these type of communities exist everywhere here outside the cities
suburban hell in my opinion, where car is kingpaul h

The equation of left wing politics and anti-high rise is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time..
I suggest you either make a case for locational suitability or get off the stage.
sorry thomond park i was quoting skyscrapernews it was a lighthearted joke
but judging by your immediate defence there might be some truth………here is the offending material –

Participantand they have managed to contain their economic growth pretty nicely too
with a stagnant economy at a growth of about %1 and their unemployment rate at a cool %10;)paul h
Participanti figured it was about 2 miles from eifell tower, wasn’t really implying it was beside it:D

no more comparisons between paris and dublin, please!!! this picture proves we are nothing alike, but nice picture from a dif perspective(not sure if emporis permit reproducing its pics!),
but i can see why everbody here loves paris – its got it all , high rise here, huge intact historic core hereand its beautiful
is there any quality pictures of the digital hub projectpaul h
Participantdublin is not paris and never will be!
why do we always have to look to other cities for inspiration
can we not do anything bold or innovative so other places can look to us and think ‘ see what they did in dublin!!’we have a mish mash of different styles some work, some dont
its like were too afraid to do anything other than the mundane ‘dublin docklands’
the spire was a fresh idea, something different and its gets slatedgeorgian dublin is beautiful and should be preserved and most historic sites but we must grow also
a lot of our old city was built before the invention of the elevator which made higher buildings possible
does anyone think our planners of those days would have only built 4 or 5 floors if they had elevators and demand for taller houses
paul h
Participantwhat is the difference really between 40 or 50 stories
it seems maybe they try for a 50 story building knowing it doesnt have a hope, then when its scaled down to something like 10 floors nimbys are happy and developer gets his buildingpaul h
ParticipantDublin needs to be more ambitious than this[/QUOTE wrote:very true thomond park especially with the huge negative attitude towards high rise
this one should have been of a very high standard like the U2 building
as it could have been a showcase to what high rise living could be in ireland
what we have is an apartment building which can be found in almost every city in the world, no imagination.this was just granted pp in london, its mixed use hotel, office, apartments etc so maybe unfair to compare
