    So Siptu’s options
    – start again, new architects, new design approach, apply for permission
    – look for permission to demolish existing, redevelop later – this would force the city’s hand to either list the building or not, then SIPTU would know where they stand. Would seperate the issue of new building height and size from the emotive issue of saving Liberty Hall
    – sell up and move to a new building on a new location, or become tenants somewhere else

Recently re-opened after renos – St. Joseph’s, Park St., Monaghan by William Hague

The original was badly hacked in the early 1980s losing most of the sanctuary fittings and a truly horrible carpet installed….

Now changed – new marble flooring to sanctuary, original tiling restored and expanded in body of church, and the fine roof cleaned. Confessionals have been removed – those on the left now contain statues and candles; those on the right gutted to form entrance to “Reconciliation Room’. Restoration – sanding etc of all the pews.

I have no item what the font in the middle of the church is for, as they’ve been doing the baptisms in the cathedral for a couple of decades now. For a time, they used to do them here – late 70-late 80s.

With devils advocate hat on, retaining the existing buildings while adding the lane (Old Abbey Street I think, although Google Maps seems to believe its called Lower Abbey Street) probably doesn’t increase the footprint of the site enough to cure the theatre’s major problem – backstage space, stage, auditorium etc as you cannot turn the theatre site 90 degrees. Although there does seem to be some sort of extension that can be removed behind the WSC buildings.

I would imagine that they’ll want to remove those buildings now (even though they’re WSC facades) as any architectural competition is going to produce lots of landmark buildings on the riverfront concepts.

Seriously – how many convenience stores does a city need? One for ever inhabitant? Is that the convenience? your own store?

Yeah the schemes for Beggars Bush seems to have come up from time to time – they clearly wanted to build something on it – but never seen an image from any of the suggestions.
