And I’d just like to thank everyone who has helped make these boards an interesting and thought provoking place. Thanks for all your support in ’99 and I look forward to increasing the exposure and range of Archeire in 2000.

    looks like its going ahead….

    ‘Golden Gate’ bridge gets go-ahead
    The Irish Independent

Dublin is set to get its own mini-Golden Gate bridge across the Liffey as part of a major new road improvement scheme on the city’s north quays, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern announced last night. Only days after the pedestrian Millennium Bridge was opened, he gave the go-ahead for the new 2.8m project to be built at the junction of Blackhall Place linking Ellis Quay in the north to Usher’s Island on the southside of the river. The scheme is designed by Spanish architect Dr Santiago Calatrva and maximises off-site fabrication, reducing problems at the site.

The bridge is open from today:

    From RTE:

Dublin’s newest bridge was officially opened today by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Mary Freehill. It is sited between the city’s other pedestrian crossing, the Ha’penny Bridge, and Capel Street bridge. The bridge was built at a cost of £1.6 million as part of the Millennium celebrations.

ESB HQ set for Dublin suburbs

THE ESB is considering the possibility of building a new headquarters office block on the outskirts of Dublin and putting its existing Fitzwilliam Street office development, right in the heart of Dublin’s commercial centre, up for sale. If it happens it will free up one of the largest development sites to become available in Dublin in a long time and is certain to attract unprecedented interest from the property professionals.

It’s very positive to see these building designs even if they never go beyond concept stage as it indicates that there is a culture shift in the mindset of those comissioning.

And if our “public” architecture doesn’t move forward, there is very little hope for education of the public as property developers are unlikely to push the envelope designwise.

    Kilkenny Station:

And don’t forget the work at Dun laoghaire:
    http://www.irish-architecture.com/buildings_ireland/dublin/dunlaoghaire/dunlaoghaire_dart_station.html

Incidentally , there was a wild and very cool design concept for Dun Laoghaire station that never made it to reality involving a tensile roof structure. It would have created a great focal point when coming in from the ferryport.

    According to the Corporation

“The Chester Beatty Museum on Shewsbury Road has never been listed for protection
in a Dublin City Development Plan. The Museum was considered for inclusion in
the Dublin City Development Plan 1999 and obtained the temporary protection of
listing while part of the proposed amendments to the Draft Dublin City
Development Plan 1999. However, the museum was not successful in being included
in the final adopted Development Plan.”

It was never really built as designed…. the glazed area beneath the building along the riverside was never completed.

As it was to be built.

    More info at http://www.archeire.com/michael_scott/emergency.html

I was in Athlone a few years ago specially to look at the building because we heard it was due to be demolished then. I have photos somewhere. I had actually thought that it would be gone by now. The concrete seemed to be of very poor quality and crumbling badly probably due to being built during the Emergency.

I’ve contacted the Planning Department of Dublin Corporation. It seems that it is not currently listed. Am awaiting information from other sources as to if it were listed in previous years.
