we’ll see today if this is even going to happen

A proposed Dublin office block development on George’s Quay which will involve the construction of white tower blocks said to be Ireland’s tallest buildings is being opposed in the High Court by residents in the streets surrounding the site.. Mr Justice Lavan will give judgment today on an application by the residents of Townsend Street, Luke Street, Moss Street and Gloucester Street for orders quashing the decision of Dublin Corporation allowing the development.

Regarding Des-Ire, I’ve decided to end that project due to time pressures.

Keeping a site this size going takes a lot of effort between mailinglists, pr, additions and general upkeep. One is possible but two similar sized projects woulod have been impossible without giving up the dayjob.

So I’ve decided to concentrate on further development of Archeire itself.

For general design issues, I would recommend Creative Ireland. For visual arts issues, I’d recommend the new website of Circa Magazine – http://www.recirca.com – hop along to it and get the ball rolling on its new boards.

    All in all….

…. i was really looking forward to it as I thought it would help to get the general public interested in architecture… it didnt, it was a major turnoff… they found it cumbersome and slow….

…. even as someone with an interest and a small knowledge, I couldnt watch it either.

… very disappointed in the end

It’s terrible. You cannot even get annoyed about it because its so bland and uninteresting.

I’ll guess that the interiors will be International Hotelism at its most interesting.

I personally think they would have been better off with the “Seven Ages” approach – decade by decade, and have a ten minute round table discussion of the decade interspersed throughout the programme.

I personally have found the series disappointing if not completely uninteresting. I found the Kevin Roche advertorial / corporate video to be far more interesting, better photographed and on the whole a much better documentary.

Finally watched the doco last night.

Although it was very much an advertisment or corporate video for Roche Dinkeloo, I was impressed. It was much easier to watch and more interesting than the Nation Building series. At least it was linear, which makes for good documentaries.

The buildings illustrated looked very well included the aforementioned Cummins Engine Company HQ.

It is pretty grim ok, the new Bank of Ireland / ICS Building Society building is banal and cliched. Actually I would go further to say that is downright offensive to Dublin. The buildings along the Liffey frontage of the site are more interesting, giving the impression that the building is hiding and because it is off the beaten track, little effort was taken to be bold and imaginative.

But there is one semi-interesting building: surrounded by a bland apartment compound is an interesting wood clad round block.

    Who are the architects?

I see in today’s IT, that it was takne down under the supervsiion of an archeologist…. however in yesterday’s Tribune, the photos showed brick and material strewn across the street – looked more as if it was just knocked down rather than taken down, but maybe I’m mistaken…..

What I was going to say (before the thread blew up) was that there’s very little opportunity for the development to access the river and canal side as an amenity area because of the way it is surrounded by road from the campshires. It is howver a quiet enough area of the docklands as its on the road to nowhere.

I sincerely hope that they will not build a new bridge there, as its nice and quiet with the lock access.

I think it’s now high time that the issue came back into the public eye. I’ll restart the email form, but we also need a new fresh approach. Any ideas?

Was thinking myself of Archers-watch, a new photo every morning showing nothing happening on the site.

“but at the latest by 1st September, 1999.”

Hmmmm, no action taken so far at all…..

I think they were supposed to be finished by September 2000…… and not a sod turned….

It seems that the Third Party Appellant has unexpectantly dropped her complaint as has the first party developers.

So the building is now doomed as the system has run its course.
