A weir under Matt Talbot bridge would be a fine idea…. picture a full Liffey with cleaned quay walls…. excellent…. there was a really low tide last week which just left mud and rubbish in the river bed….

    Archers garage rebuilding soon
    The Irish Independent

It is expected that the rebuilding of the former Archers Garage premises on the corner of Fenian St and Sandwith St Upper, Dublin 2 will begin next month under the direction of Dublin Corporation. Corporation management has informed councillors that agreement has been reached with developer Noel O’Callaghan. However, plans for a new office block to the rear of the garage remain under appeal.

Reclad Liberty Hall. No, because we would end up with some dreadful 13 storey Post Modern rubbish.

My suggestion, replace the glazing with non-reflective glass like it was originally when built. It would go some way to nmaking the building appear lighter.

Nice idea, but you’re really talking about a form of ethnic cleansing, moving an entire community elsewhere. Neither fair nor tolerable in this day and age. A hundred years ago or more, it would have been easy.

Scale wise, it would be horrific, the length os Smithfield stretching as far as the Law Society would be huge, worthy of a militaristic regime.

The old photos of Blackhall Place with the two terraces either side framing the Law Society are a real eye opener – they led the space scale and a certain dignity which is now all gone.

The gaps in the stonework are to allow the a/c to be installed. There doesnt seem to be any “extra features” to be added.

Must take that photo this weekend.

    Really?

That would be good news. It’s so hard to explain to the average member of the public why 20th century works are important.

“a ‘bombastic’ and curiously dated series of ‘lighting pylons’incorporating unfinished raw galvanised steel supports to the gas braziers over, all somewhat reminiscent of the grosser architectural excesses of Albert Speer, – one almost expects an SS marching band to appear in full panoply. “

I completely agree with this… there’s something about the braziers lit that suggests Nazi torchlit marches… somehow appropriate in the light of Ireland’s new found intolerence…..

I think it looks very well. I’ve always liked wooden clad buildings anyway but this is a good one, much more interesting that the round on in the IFSC.

I see that the students in the Limerick Institute of Technology are rebelling on the Architectural technicians course. As far as I know, the college downgraded the level of teh course, the RIAI then recinded their recognition of the course.

Perhaps the students in DIT need to take affirmative action.

As regarding the London critics, here we really only have Frank McDonald and Shane O’Toole and I cannot really see either of them appearing for the developers. Also maybe there was a little of the “see, our English neighbours who know so much more about architecture think its a good idea”.

Martin Pawley indeed appeared for the developers, and as far as i know also produced an article for one of the national newspapers in praise of the scheme

Well what I would like would be someone well enough informed so as to be able to write a column that touches on a different aspect each week….. be an interesting archive to build up here.

Also looking for someone to write an architectural column as I don’t have the time or the ability.

Well I receive no funding or cash for doing this. I’d like nothing better to be doing this as the dayjob but as it doesnt generate any income (despite its traffic), that’s impossible.

I still have the domain, and the content so I may add the des-ire information to the archeire site in the near future. So feel free to keep using this forum, as I’ll be adding some backup material and I’m hoping to persuade someone to write a column on design issues.
