There’s a difference between a gift to a museum and giving money to a commercial organisation to make money.

Went throught it tonight, well woth another trip, great furniture, architectural models and much information.

I hope it proves an amazing success for the museum. And if you are out there, their secretive benefactor who was thanked on the night, well done. Unlike many of our new millionaires and rich you spent well and have left a legacy for the nation.

those in Belfast may find this of interest:

    Voices of Cabrini
    Director: Ronit Bezalel
    1999 – 30 minutes.

A panel discussion featuring Ciaran Mackel (Architect), Billy Mitchell (Link Community Association), and Ciaran Kearney (Falls Community Council) will follow the film.

Shot over a three-year period, this superb documentary follows the residents of Chicagos best-known public housing development as their homes are marked for destruction in the interest of urban gentrification. The film captures the diverse voices of the community, many worried if the city will keep its promise to replace Cabrini with equally affordable housing. “…a gripping story about living in the city…”

The demolition of Cabrini Green is part of a nation-wide trend to tear down high rise public housing. What does this mean for the future of public housing?

    Cultúrlann, 216 Falls Road, Belfast. Admission £2 @ 25 March 8.00pm

I know of one shopkeeper who simply retired because he was fed up of the grief from the junkies at the Eastern Health Board offices…. so putting in retail units is no guarantee that shops will fill them… there are already quite a few empty units on the other side (north) of the street…..

I had forgotten just how ugly a building it was originally until I finally got my hands on a copy of the “Destruction of Dublin” by Frank McD.

Interesting. Hadn’t heard about that. Where did that site come from?

Trinity must be rolling in it, between the work there, the new Library, the work down at Pearse Street, cleaning up Westland Row….

Not a bad lecture, even if he seemed to forget about Ireland halfway through and go on a meander through the signature works of the 20th Century.

View of the roof and factory floor

View of the rooflight, roof is curving so the interpenetration is quite cool…

Just a general shot of the interior of another part of the plant, note the round windows and the curving walls below…

Frank McD gave it a great write-up in the paper last week, so I wandered up recently to see it. Although an office block, it is very different from the large boxes of the IFSC, and the set back does allow the Mansion House to breathe. I don’t think its too bad at all, and I do like the windows on the side elevation.

Bigger, better Abbey to star on same old stage
    The Irish Independent

The Abbey Theatre is to stay at its present site despite months of speculation that it was to move to a new location. The building, which also houses the Peacock theatre, is to be knocked down and rebuilt at a cost of around Euro100m. And it will mean that the National Theatre will have to move out of its home at Lower Abbey Street for at least three years while the long-awaited new building is completed.

now…. from my point of view is it worth spending 100 million on this…. the abbey loses money anyway, having a slicker theatre wont cure that… especially when it has the same number of stages… why not move the damed thing to O’Connell Street and help rejuvenate the street

Get this…. reasons why from the Heritage Council…

“The funding available under the 2002
Publications Grant Scheme is towards the design and production of a
document or web-site but not for the equipment required to produce it.”

so because I can do the work myself I cannot get money for kit… but if I wanted to pay a webdeveloper, they would have forked out for that…. how ****ing stupid is that….

Nothing to do with the IGS. Those sites are hosted and maintained by me to help those organisation. I was looking for funding to do the Buildings of Ireland section.

Ahh sod them, the next time they come looking for me to promote their agendas they can go run and jump….
