It would be great if a similar attitude existed here as a great oppurtunity existed for something similar to happen (or at least be discussed) on the future of the recently state owned Clancy Barracks at Islandbridge.
PapworthParticipantA most sensible result for the oldest and most historic district in the city. Well done The Friends of Kilmainham, An Taisce, Irish Georgian Society, History Group of the Teachers of Ireland, Irish Labour Party, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, Michael Mulcahy recent Lord Mayor of Dublin and many more who spoke / presented a submission at the Oral Hearing. Kilmainham has been saved from Iowa Barns.
PapworthParticipantNow round up a team from nearby Bolton Street comprising uncomprimising Engineering and Architectural students and form the Dublin Giants- then compete in and win the UK Ice Hockey League !! Now that will put Smithfield on the map.
PapworthParticipantNice idea but access to Kilmainham Mill is only via the very narrow bollarded off Roserstown Lane for a science museum that would undoubtedly attract thousands as witness and visit W5 at the Odyssey Belfast.
Thorntons restaurant (currently situated along the nearby Grand Canal) are supposedly interested in expanding by acquiring the old mill to provide a much needed local and tourism facility i.e. a top class restaurant. The infamous IAP (Miss Mary Taylor “managerâ€!!) for Kilmainham also failed (despite local advice) to include this old mill along with St Jude’s spire / site and the old 18th C congregational church as “targeted sites†for development !! as a result there are not too many interested people in there much needed development. The ideal site for an interactive science museum in Kilmainham “Dublin’s museum districtâ€
( Kilmainham Gaol, RHK and Great War Memorial museum towers) is the 4 acre site opposite Kilmainham Gaol …now that is where something to rival W5 in Belfast could and should be built.PapworthParticipantThanks ro-G, very informative web site and certainly this development is different to what we are conditioned to and usually see presented as 3rd generation office block developemnt.
PapworthParticipantMaybe(the all wise and fawning one)Frank will give us his “independent” view of this development in the Holy Irish Times.
May 15, 2002 at 12:00 pm in reply to: Who is Frank Mc Donald’s transport (and seemingly housing) Expert ? #719026PapworthParticipantMaybe, we should suggest to the all wise one himself Frank that the demolition ball should fall down on those low density energy inefficient Victorian piles in Rathgar !! Frank you must be running out of material there are plenty of developements you have been so quiet on. You have gone soft Frank too many late nights in Milan !!
May 11, 2002 at 11:10 am in reply to: Who is Frank Mc Donald’s transport (and seemingly housing) Expert ? #719021PapworthParticipantLeave the only decent planned housing schemes in the history of post independence Dublin well alone and knock down the rubbish as listed above. Frank and his expert need a reality check, come back from the moon lads.
PapworthParticipantThese two proposals for such sensitive sites opposite King John’s Castle and Kilmainham Gaol are out of context and both are deserving of better proposals and vision. Both are deserving the attention and comments of our minister for Arts and Culture although she apparently has only interest in what is near her own constituency.
Both fail to address the cultural aspects when they present themselves so clearly and should concentrate themselves on these aspects and on how these historic national monuments and protected buildings should and could be enhanced by contemporary design and not skirt and loom around them as is the case with what is proposed for Limerick and Kilmainham.
PapworthParticipantI agree Park House is not the worst example of a 70s office block but its location, monolithic design, singular function and domination of its surroundings in a mostly Victorian setting , leaves it totally out on its own and alien to the existing context.
No doubt its views from within are excellent but the view it presents to all who travel and live along the Victorian NCR is just another monolithic sore-thumb 70s lash up office block.
PapworthParticipantWhat about little unique Ryan’s of Meath Street now closed down and a new maga bar opened beside it called the Fountain.
PapworthParticipantNorwegian domestic football never had to compete with GAA, Rugby and the deliberate discrimination (Government, Christian Brothers & Gaelgoeries et.all) against Irish domestic soccer that existed here well into the late 70s , this is the main reason we are so lacking in stadia and facilities.
By the way well done Dundalk and to a great club (Shells) football must be won on the pitch. Roll on the World Cup.

PapworthParticipant….and to add let them leave the IMMA in kilmainham and build it opposite the gaol..
PapworthParticipant..certainly does..i also overheard in the back room of ye royal oak (very reliable venue) that another possibility for the grounds of the RHK could be wait for it a temporary?? park and ride location until the infrastructure inproves !! – parking for the 4000 office workers in the macro blocks maybe ?? .. but geeting back to the macro blocks. “this site was once a choclate factory”…SO WHAT.. what’s the point here??? look at the model.. a space station is presently being planned for this site..smithfield was once all derelict factories..look now and how modern irish architects have designed and worked so well there. Can you imagine the macro blocks with the lights on!!and bearthed (forever) in the face of the gaol and the royal hospital in a district that has the finest examples of victorian, georgian and remnants of monastic and viking settlement dating back to the 7th C…this “THING” looming at the jail is alien,of no benifit to the district..it will actually negate and set tourism back in kilmainham..its proposterous and architecturally off the wall in every respect for such a location- its totally wrong in every sence of the word and its supposed to be part of the iap by DC!!. Contempory architecture could work and make this site if some architectural vision is demanded by the city planners “..if its appropriate and a well thought out design..” as Greg has rightly previously stated.
PapworthParticipantWhat is proposed after viewing the model on http://www.kilmainham-gaol.com seems to me medicore and insignificent(except in scale) office blocks. I dont think Smithfield has been jeoprdised by its appropriate development – the deserved development of this site would be achieved by similar tourist driven developments, especially as a new meca for tourists has opened in the district of Dublin 8 the new Guinness Storehouse.. What’s in jeopardy here is the diminishing of the rightfull dominance of Kilmainham Gaol on Inchicore Road.
