Well it’s never going to happen as we have the same bloody climate as our British neighbours our love of British football.. all engineers apply for the coveted C. Eng. ……all other professionals apply for membership of the British institutes and regulary attend conferences on the “mainland”. We love British TV (the best in the world and in English !!)…….. we want to win the “The National”, Cheltenham, the Brooker prize, the Sterling medal, roar on the Lions…….. launch plays on the West End and at one time even considered bringing Wimbeldon over and renaming them Dublin City. How does one explain this to a Hungarian !!

How does one explain this to a Hungarian !! In English I’d imagine !!!
PapworthParticipantWhy does drink always infiltrate a discussion on Dublin / Ireland. I was in Spain on holidays and bought an Irish paper and there was Charlie Chalk (Oval bar) on page 2 with a pint of Guinness in his hand hoping Clinton would drop into his bar for a pint after his book signing in Easons and then on the next page Ahern with a pint of Bass in his hand and the article was about Bass closing down its Belfast plant. Especially when viewed from a distance it’s all so pathetic and paddywackery !!
PapworthParticipantDCCs IAP for Kilmainham is just about integrating any space or building into bland apartment blocks all the talk in 2000 of a tourism railway linking all historic sites, blah blah… “enhancement of the public realm” more blah blah …every statement of the IAP had turned out to be one big con.
PapworthParticipantCork City 3 Malmo ( the Swedish Champs ) 1 . A great development over the weekend.
PapworthParticipantThe Turkish plan links Europe with Asia our two little tram lines were planned with the idea that never the twain (trains) shall meet – little encouragement for the folk of Tallaght to visit Sandyford and sample its delights or visa versa !!
PapworthParticipantWell done Belfast and the BBC saw a highly organised and planned to the T street / river Irish party that altered between 2 venues – the stage at City Hall and the other on the Lagan. The stage at the Lagan looked great, like it was floating on the river. Great stages and a great night of music showing Belfast at its best.
PapworthParticipantThe saga of the long running promised School of Music is typical of promises and planning in this country- the dearth of modren decent “wow” cultural venues anywere in the country (with the notable exception of the Helix). Pretty fireworks displays are fine for a few minutes but no architectural legacy will be the norm as usual. However if St. Pats don’t get there act togeather next season I’d love to see Pat Dolan and Cork City do the double for Cork in 2005.
PapworthParticipantOur lads have a lot to learn from Belfast City Council on how to run city centre events. Belfast is planning (rather has planned )for 25,000 people to attend in the vicinity of City Hall. Can’t blame the BBC for having no interest in a field in the Park or falling down Lansdowne Road as protraying our capital / EU capital – their doing us a favour !! But the whine will go on ..we could have broadcast to the world a great party from the banks of the Tolka or even the Camac only for the Brits !!
PapworthParticipantIt’s not the height I would have in doubt its the quality of the architecture. I bet it’s a big Hello from David Keogh to Tony Reddy up on the Nestle site opposite the Gaol.
PapworthParticipantSimple solution, bring in the Portuguse to plan and build one stadium as they have just finished 6 on time and on budget and the Spanish to plan and build the infrastructure to same !! In the meantime Anfield sounds fine to me as Liverpool has always been a great soccer city and a surburb of Dublin.
PapworthParticipantSam’s Central Bank has grown on me over the years. What I really like about it is those hanging cables stretching like guitar strings keeping the floors up – a great example of architecture and visible structural engineering -for the pits of a building just walk around the corner from the Central Bank and view Blooms Hotel – a great example of 70s 9 inch cavities at their pinacle.
PapworthParticipantJust like the Metro link to the airport is now transformed into a DART link and sure close down the DART service to Howth to transform the Metro line into a DART line to the Airport !!– what rampant confusion, stop the lights, is there no end to the doddering and dithering of this government on transport infrastructure “planning†!!
PapworthParticipantThere had to be a more appropriate way ….the massive concrete sections are horrendous one would not see them outside the US embassy in Baghdad !!
PapworthParticipantCan anyone explain why the once semi open sides of the existing bridge on the SCR Rialto (which LUAS will one day pass under) was altered by the placing and setting of a continuous and high corrugated concrete finish that really has visually destroyed the old bridge – they stick out like sore thumbs along both sides of the bridge.
PapworthParticipantMG you got it in one but all the lads are developers architects we see the results all around us ala office block extensions built on to office blocks from the 70s along Harcourt Terrace to name but one example and the footpath literally becomes a ‘foot-path’ and nothing else as is the case all over the city.
Brief “Design to the edge and the last mm.”
PapworthParticipantIreland’s greatest contribution to late 20th C architecture and continuing into the 21st C has to be the invention and proliferation of the SUPERPUB.
PapworthParticipantShould never have attained office higher than a local shop steward !!
PapworthParticipantGive the mono age group a few more years and they wil be curious and search in vain for genuine Dublin locals and they will surely wonder how this destruction of what we were once famous for was destroyed by goverment legislation – the deliberate protection of the infamous publican cartel which sees local bars turned into supersubs.
PapworthParticipantDublin pub culture is literally dying on its feet with these standing room only drinking sheds -the once common place local is nearly gone only to replaced with the likes of the Kestral Walkinstown and other drinking blocks ala the Submarine Kimmage the Quay’s bar Temple bar and another one the Half Way House Navan Road – these ‘locals’ have become so huge that bouncers man all corners via radio linkup in an attempt to control the huge drinking frenzy that they create. RIP the once great and intimate Dublin pub environment.
