ParticipantI think TCD and CIE intend to put an 80m tower on the southern corner of Pearse street and Westland Row, it will incorporate Pearse station, the large carpark area beside it and will require the demolition of the nondiscript 90s student residence called Goldsmith Hall. They are hoping to get planning permission on the principal established in the high buildings report that there should be tall buildings by the transport hubs.
At 80m it will be much higher than Liberty Hall and, I think, the highest building on the island. I must say, I am filled with enthusiasm for the idea.

ParticipantWhy this obsession with not mixing new and old buildings and not finding new uses for buildings that have lost their original function. It can be done badly, but Museums, like Galleries, Universities and Government Buildings, often mix old and new and often do it very effectively. In the case of an Interactive Science Center using the Magazine Fort would add a depth of texture and history a totally new building would lack.
On the other hand, I have to agree an Arsenal would be another good, albeit dry, use of the Magazine, my only fear would be that an Arsenal is something you drop into whereas a Science Center is something you make a trip too. Now, designing a contemporary arsenal on the docks would be an interesting challenge!
