we don’t have the worst public transport in the developed world, its not great, but not the worst. you are falling pray of the myth of irish exceptionalism, the belief that if we aren’t the best then we must be the worst.

so the auckland skytown is just a small cn tower and they put it up in 1997! what’s so landmark about that?

re spike, no big crane yet, they have one of those heavy lifting cranes that they use to put cranes up, if you see what i mean.

well it hasn’t worked because i have no idea what the auckland skytower looks like. the spike is good bet though and there are cranes back on the site now, its so exciting.

you have to admit though, the sales centre is great. hard to beleive it is just an ordinary prefab under all that fancy wood.

the other good thing about a bookies is that it has tellers, so it would be a good vernacular use of a banking hall.

so how long are they promising to stay there? i am all for cutting the trees and planting elms instead, it would be nice, but actual greens chained (chained!) to trees might be nicer still, it would certainly add life and colour to the urban environment. maybe we could throw rotten fruit at them, it could become traditional.

bendy buses: they fit more people because you stand the whole length, you can’t stand upstairs on a double decker. they work really well if you have more doors, here, because we only have front doors, they don’t load so easily.

i find this strong reaction kind of wierd, what’s so awfull about a bookies. sure, not everybody will use it, not everyone will use a high-end womens clothing shop or a shop selling mens perfume or a jewellers either and they are the things usually found on main streets. more than one or two bookies would be bad, and it will be bad if they make a mess of the building, or have a cheap sign or allow the street to be littered with torn up betting slips or cigarette butts and it would be nice if there was easy access to the main banking hall and if it wasn’t ruined with harsh lighting and a crap carpet, but there is nothing so shamefull about a bookies, well, i like to gamble myself and i’m not ashamed, just a bit foolish, well, my system will be working soon and then i won’t even be foolish, i think.

a classy bookies seems a good use of a banking building and certainly no worse than a pub. it’s part of our culture too. sure, there are bad things about gambling, its addictive and, in the past, bookies were seedy, but the same is true of drinking and pubs.

Speaking of which, does anyone know why the plan to make cars on pearse street turn at tara street was dropped, suddenly and quitely, about a week before it was supposed to happen. i was quite keen on the idea for the selfish reason that i seem to spend half my waking trying to cross college green.

Graham you obviously haven’t been to Beruit, the bombed out bits really are very bombed out, the restored bits are really lovely and the bits that weren’t affected are a warren.

To clarify, the article in the times only said that the sale of the lands was being considered, not that they were for sale, hopefully they will see sense before going any further. As for Greg F’s comments about apartments, the red brick one you can see from the gardens looking towards Phoenix park are really terrible. That was a pity too, it would have been possible to build quite substantial building in Islandbridge without damaging the view, but red brick pastiche wasn’t the thing.

so i saw in the paper during the week that the opw is thinking of selling off the unused land attached to the royal hospital. seems short sighted, i always assumed that they were saving it for another imma, cool, building in the far future when the collection outgrows the royal hospital. will the local residents association go the the mattress on this one too or will the be happy now they have stopped the offices opposite the gaol.

They have a sign up saying that the delay is because of a strike at the french steel mill.

yes, but isn’t that one of the nice things about the ngi extension, i love the way it has the old ball room in the cafe. nor is it such a uniquely irish thing to mix old and new buildings, though it is something that is done well in the temple bar.

i agree with gregf, incorporating the 1916 building can only make the mall more interesting, pictures of the moore street facade make it look very bland.

3rd highest gdp per capita, which is different from richest, lots of coutries with lower incomes have had high incomes for much longer. anyone who thinks that dublin transport in exceptional either way should live somewhere else for a while, there are worse, there are better.
