ParticipantNiall is right of course, we need someone from elsewhere to head the rpa, someone who isn’t conditioned by the local situation and who will get angry all the time at all the empire-building and money-wasting.

ParticipantUnlike say the Gate which is in the middle of all. Its a pity tcd couldn’t of bought it and used it as an auditorium, more in line with the original use, or, the use it was put to for most of its history. Its hard to see the actual original use, turning fish heads into gas, being viable now. Anyway, I get the impression it wasn’t for sale.

Participantof course galway had the rahoon flats, its own medium rise residental disaster, pity they allowed suburban style housing there after they were demolisted. salthill could look great with some tall buildings, our own vanover without the crap faux-heritage style tourist area. it’s easy zoning, leave galway proper the height it is and allow salthill to get higher and higher. of course, that would mean knocking down the warwick, site of many coming of age moments, for me and so many others, but we must all lose something to make progress.

Participantdid they have to make that map incomprehensible by hand or can you buy maps like that, maybe for adventure tourism. do they really want the tower to be completely round and if so why didn’t they make it like that in the picture. are they really going to reconstruct the claddagh near the claddagh, will people live in it, will they be safe from cholera?

Participantwell they have just put up a planning notice: restore everything, reinstate this and that, change of use to offices, staff tea rooms etc i guess they need to save up for it too and for the “finger building” to provide access to the roof garden.

Participantgreg f, not big i know, but relatively big. the applications are interesting for two reasons, the nine story block is actually in the east wall and adjoins cottages and the 12 story is in the ddda area but is still going through the dcc, is this because it exceeds the heights given in the masterplan. 9 stories at the edge of the east wall, it would make obvious how stupid 6-7 along the liffey is.

Participantinterestingly there are two planning applications in the north dock area for relatively tall buildings, a nine story residential building on the corner of west road and sheriff street and a twelve story residential, office and resteraunt on the corner of castleforbes st and sheriff street. these seem to lie outside the ddda remit in that they seem to require planning permission from dcc.

Participanti won’t get too excited graham, i’m a senior member too and i never have anything memorable to say.
so here is my favourite story about how everyone has changed their opinion about the spike, for some reason i was home on friday and had joe duffy on and some people were ringing in giving out because gavin friday had pulled an inflatable spike between his legs at the brown thomas fashion show and waved it in an suggestive way, anyway joe encouraged people to ring in with their views, was the shocking or harmless fun, who knows, but all the phone calls were from people who wanted to know were they could buy inflatable spikes.
the answer, by the way, is that the inflatable spike gavin friday pulled though his legs was a bespoke creation made by the point prop department and, according to the times, the image of the spike belongs to ian richie, but he, lovely man, is giving it a “spire trust” which will license these things and give the profits out in grants to arts groups and so on.

Participantwell put it this way j seerski, do you think dublin would be better off if they removed the rails around stephens green, removed most of the trees, paved half of it and stuck a big toilet in the corner. this is what happened to eyre square after oiche an gaoithe mor and i was just suggesting reversing these changes.

ParticipantI think they are going the wrong way with Eyre Sq, they should put railings back up and plant it formally like Stephen’s Green. It needs to be contained and seperated from the bussle.
It is sad what has happened to open space in Galway, building that big retail park by the Corrib, where the Cinema is, that was so stupid and building on Palmyra Park was a crime. There was space for a park beside the Claddagh Palace too, where the old railway station was, and that was build on. There is still I think an opportunity to open up the area between Ceannt Station and the bay, that could provide a less formal park near a newly formal Eyre Sq.

ParticipantCount me in fjp. Lets make a list of people to write to and then divide it up and see where we get. I guess we should just start by writing to CIE and the DDDA and DubCC asking what plans they have for improving the appearance of the bridge and take it from there. Is there any society or body interested in Victorian industrial architecture?
