unwelcoming to blow-ins? it is one of the main locations for recent-immigrant owned businesses and is one place where people who aren’t white don’t feel conspicuous.

i don’t agree sw101, the atmosphere in Moore St is great, its like being on Canal St. every city should have an area that is run down but still busy, you don’t want everywhere to be either high-street or no-go. I would prefer if they put their efforts into knocking the fish-market and developing the planned market square.

current plan is to put ballymun on the metro.

my guess is that they won’t tell us which sunday to avoid crowds.

    from the brl website:

Q: When will Pearse Tower be imploded?
A: It will take place on a Sunday at 12 noon towards the end of August. We will be confirming an exact date within the next few weeks. We always do implosions at this time because 90% of residents are at home and therefore easier to account for.

i have to say i have always found london bus pretty good, th privatization is pretty subtle, the route numbers are fixed by the regulator and the fares are all the same. this is in contrast with anywhere else in england, its usually shocking bad. the inter-city services are particularily poor, and the coverage very bad, lots of places don’t have any service, or, if they do, it is only to a single hub.

a very small bar completely seperate from the main public bar, usually served through a hatch with an entrance off the main enterance and bench rather than bar stool seating, originally intendend for women at a time when they weren’t welcome in the main bar.

s middle position is the only reasonalbe one here. its not such a bad hobby and its admirable they only ever try and do tricks they can’t do. it would be good for there to be a skate park in town, skate board parks are great to watch. on the other hand, they do make a mess of seats etc, they are frightening to some people, particularily old people for whom a fall is very serious and for people with children, its noisy. let them use some public area and design others to make skateboarding impossible, make sure there are always some part of parks where there is no skating.

i am sorry about the dd, it was on ok read for on the bus or whatever and so much nicer than the eh.

sorry to hear that paul, what a pity. the galway observer agreed to print my cartoon a week before it went bust years ago so i have some sympathy. that was the end of my career as a cartoonist too, which is probably a good thing, but in your case, its a loss for us all.

The buildings on the north between the railway bridge and amien street are ok, espessially the corner building and no. 44, the dutch billy style one. there is a planning ap for 38? to 45, basically demolish everything except the facade of 44 and 45, two six story mixed use blocks and a new street connecting talbot street and foley street. probably will be an improvement.

to be fair, they do get vandalised in other cities too, and, always, dublin city centre has people living in it and going out in it.

i am all for these nice things, plaza’s, squares, linear parks and so on, but i think a bit of thought has to be put into them and i don’t think that’s the case with filling george’s dock. maybe it will be great and if it is, super, but i feel it is some ill-conceived attempt on the part of the ddda to stop kids swimming and the stage thing is an a postori justification. they should have finished the stack house first, and don’t get me started on that, and then kept trying with the pontoon and the cafe and massage boat idea and then, if that didn’t work and if it looked like there would be a use, beyond some sterile annual ddda sponsored event, for a stage, then maybe they could have tried that. what the ifsc lacks is a community to hold events in its public area and filling in george’s dock won’t change that. even dermot desmond feels that the area is too closed in and exclusive.

    glad the ramps gone.

i guess i have some sympathy for the don’t privatise the sea front arguement, but, my understanding was that both schemes offered public access to refurbished baths. is that true? do people feel that no-one but the dcc can be trusted to maintain this sort of access or is the access on offer inadaquate in some way?

i think it reflects well on dublin too, i have seen this thing before in nyc, chicago and toronto and in toronto it completely took over, the toronto street scape is so bland the painted moose (they had moose) seemed overdone. they didn’t work so well in chicago either, but in dublin, as in nyc, you come upon them mixed up with everything else and they are a nice suprise.

in nyc there was a cow scandal because david lynch’s cow: “eat my fear” was withdrawn because it upset children; leading to lots of what is the purpose of public art soul searching.

dpower, i really am a rocket scientist, that’s the thing. anyway, my feeling would be that the polished stainless steel would stain too, but that stain would look worse because you would see lines and patches of stain. however, that isn’t a professional opinion, i don’t actually know anything about stainless steel in my professional capacity (as a rocket scientist).

that can’t be true can it, what about that massage parlour boat? i thought they promised more of this, cafe boats etc. what about the litter, traffic cones, bicycles etc, what about the water quality? i spent half my life thinking the ddda are super and half thinking they are awful.
