Participantyeah, i was the only one who wanted eyre square restored and in the usual way, i amn’t an architect.

ParticipantSo I couldn’t go to this, I was away. Was it any good?

Participantwell, a metro would be great, but lets finish one thing before starting another, let’s electrify the kildare and maynooth line and run dart trains on them, connect the airport to the sligo line and build a luas line to dcu and ballymun and another to crumlin.

Participantno charge, all welcome.

Participanti agree, a good solution is to connect the airport to the rail network using a spur from the sligo line and to connect it to the luas network by running a luas line north via dcu and ballymun.
the thing lost here is a new use for the lovely broadstone station.

Participantstupid to drop the metro, but if they do, stupider still to use the dart line, the dart line if full, resignalling and platform work will increase capacity, but not by enough, the north bould line already carries the enterprise and, again, how to get from the west to an airport without bringing your car?
there must be a better way to get to the airport, platform11 have a suggestion using the sligo line.

Participanti can’t believe you would want to take down the merrion park railings, merrion park is lovely.
as for eyre square, my proposal is to rail the square and then turn the open carpark area in front of dunnes/etc into a more informal open space, with a market area and seating etc.
i have heard also that they have pedestrianized infront of the skeff, but haven’t seen it. i hope not. has anyone else seen the pedestnianization between trafalgar square and the british ng, its not good, it demeans the square.

Participanteyre square is located somewhere like stephens green, it is at the end of galway’s main shopping street with impressive, formal buildings around it. again, the question is, if the railings around stephen’s green were destroyed in a storm, would you want them replaced. i don’t think all open space should be railed, but it does help seperate and contain a park and yes, many of the best parks, in dublin and elsewhere (central park anyone) are railed.

Participanti never understand this, eyre square was a georgian square until the storm in the late sixties, after which the railings were removed, railed squares are very successfull, why not restore? there is, in addition, an area of carparking and market north of the square, this could serve as a more informal park area.

Participanthalf the lights on the spike aren’t working, it has been like that since before the storm. please, someone fix them.

Participantactually the tcd tennis courts are just being resurfaced, they will be back soon, the new surface will also allow for 5-a-side soccer.

ParticipantObserver, are you claiming that there are significant parts of the permanent collection of contemporary art not normally on display? i don’t think that’s true. it is true of the hugh lane, and, the imma make of point of keeping large amounts of the permanent collection in storage, but wasn’t the ngi’s most pressing need for exhibition space, an atrium and more space for cafe’s, shops etc.

ParticipantStephen C, can you think of a better place for a central bus station? the quays lead straight out of the city to the west, these will clear up when the port tunnel is built, the quays and east wall road will lead to the tunnel and north. its harder to get south, but I can’t think of anywhere else that is better. it would be shame to use busarus as anything but a busarus, the function is so much a part of the design. it is true that it is over crowded now, they nead a better way to arrange the buses which don’t leave from busarus itself.

Participantnicely put by the times. so, again, leaving aside the whole long and stupid story, what do people think of the relative merits of the two towers, my own view is that i was happy enough when i saw the winner, but the 3w is far better again.
notjim
Participanti think the liebskind design looked great and the boat aspect is lots of fun, the big disappointment is the hennigan-peng.
notjim
Participantso which do people prefer, for my part, yeah i quite liked the original winner, but the 3w is really lovely, very elegant.

Participantkillmainham mill is going to be apartments. a big waste in my view.
notjim
Participantso what we need now is a tv programme featuring and explaining the two designs along with a recounting of the whole sorry saga and personal recommendations by the great and the good and then a vote by the public. it would be great fun.

Participanti didn’t really get this bridge til i saw it coming down blackhall place in a taxi and from there the splayed form is very sexy.
