of course, sorry. i amn’t sure twat needs staring out either, but i certainly agree i describes royston.

on the other hand, i have come around to thinking the abbey should move, that end of abbey street will look after itself, the gentrification of henry street is pushing shops that way and the ifsc and the luas will bring office to the area. on the other hand, the top of o’connell street is important, adding the abbey to the gate, the ambassador, the savoy and, at a push, the ugc, and you’d have a mini-west end to balance the temple bar’s mini-Soho.

btw, here is my temple bar comment: they wanted SoHo and got Soho, did I just make that up or has someone said it before?

you see fintan o’toole was flying the abbey goes to the carlton site plan again. along with the usual arguements, he had a novel new reason for using the carlton site: the facade is quite short, so you wouldn’t have to spend so much on architecture.

its kind of amazing, they finally get going on this in a serious way and the lord mayor starts giving out. has he anything to say about the carlton site, or is he going to keep quite until the cranes are there.

i didn’t realize the sherriff street bridge was going, i guess that’s good, how are we going to get over the canal without blocking it for canal traffic, I guess a much lower bridge would still have clearance.

I agree, it looks great with the ramp gone, it opens the IFSC up, this end of the IFSC is the most closed off and so this is a big improvement, it will open up a nice plaza too framed by transport links.

one problem with running the luas down sherriff street is the incline on the sherriff street bridge. an advantage of running it down mayor street is that it will be close to the south quays, encouraging people to cross the new footbridge at stack a. obviously having it backing out of connolly is stupid, but i think the mayor street route makes sense.

most of this 30M isn’t money wasted, it has just been transfered from the RPA to the DDDA, so the DDDA can now spend it not buildig the U2 tower.

now, why doesn’t the luas continue from the point up east wall road so that it can serve the east point business park, oh, and my house. it wouldn’t be so expensive because they are going to be widening the east wall road anyway and so there would be no need for all this service repositioning.

the new bus livery is nice, now what would be great would be having the taxis match. will the franchised buses match to, as they do in london, or will each company decide its own livery?

i think it would be a pity to loose an taisce, they represent point of view and it is always good to have all point of views heard, good goverance is the mediation of extremes, and so on. if an taisce’s view win out and you disagree, then your arguement is with the relavant council or apb for their decision, not with an taisce for expression pushing their opinion. if the system works, then making a bad arguement should affect nothing and making a good one should help.

myself, i agree with an taisce about half the time and disagree the other half. i do find it amazing though that it is such a closed organization, they make very little effort to recruit, they don’t organize many public meetings, for a campaigning organization their pr is awful, they appear snobby, their website is poor and so on. maybe this is because they are trying to fill to many different roles: enviromental campaign, planning watchdog and national trust.

in canada they have large cities with surface carparks in the center and huge highways and no streets, i wouldn’t use it as a good example of urban anything.

So here is another variation on this theme, why not move the parish records and geneological service from kildare street and use it as a superior information centre with library services like computers, newpaper reading rooms and so on, a museum of the customs house itself, a tourist information centre and on top of this, an access point for the family history services and a centre for local history research, maybe with some rooms given over to the free university.

sorry, i meant custom house, graham, i never took you for a pedent.

doesn’t the customs house have a fine edwardian interior? it’s hard to imagine that working well with a museum of architecture whiere a bigger blanker space would be needed. now, I haven’t ever been in the customs house, i could be wrong on this. it might work well as a home for various archives and the civic museum, looking cramped where it is now, and a tourist center and library, a combination of civic uses. maybe the Dublin office of the OPW could be there after they sell Stephen’s Green. the main thing would be to get people coming in and out again and through the riverside doors, its so sad looking the way it is now.

People engaged in this debate always forget that the mission of the GAA is to promote the Irish sports; something they do very well, few countries of our size persue their indiginous sports at the level that the GAA sports are played here and Ireland is a more interesting, varied and fun place because they are.

The GAA keep Croke Park closed because it is in there interests to do so, they have built up the honour of playing there as a potent myth and a motivator in an amatuer game. This would be diminished if Croke Park became less exclusive, they will only do so if it is worth there while financially.

The GAA was given money by the government with no strings attached, it isn’t their job to second guess the moral obligations this money creates, their job is to spend it in the way that they feel best serves there mission: promoting Irish sports.

Terraces create atmosphere and soccer clubs would have liked to have kept them, they were forced to change because the behaviour of their fans made them unsafe. There is no reason why that should affect the GAAs decision about rebuilding Hill 16.

I understand that some people are anxious that Croke Park be opened for soccer so Man U can play there in round whatever of the European Champions whatever, and even if I wanted that too, I don’t see what it has to do with the GAA unless they wanted to increase there revenue generating powers. It like critizing Bord na gCon for not opening Shelbourne park up for cycle races.

the iveagh gardens are lovely and part of their charm is that they are so enclosed, hidden away. they are quite well used by office workers from the harcourt street area. it would be good to have a few more enterances.

as for kildare place, the building the other side of the wall looks quite handsome, what is it does anyone know. could the back of this building form part of a perimeter to kildare place with fine railings filling the gaps.

i think it is possible kildare place would be used more if it looked better and if the back enterance to the museum stayed open and if there was a small coffee and sandwich kiosk.

no, it is south of the wiggins teape site, it was the ratheborne candle factory and other bits and pieces, the developers have been collecting it for years.

wiggins teape has planning permission for i think six stories of offices in five blocks, very suburban, ie bland. anyway they are hoping to change two of these to residential, planning pending.

why do people always want to knock down east wall, what about fairview, clontarf, marino? leave east wall, we need a variety of housing types and there is enough brown field in the area for high rise apartments and offices.

it actually looks about right for the site, which is more jersey city than nyc and isn’t really a landmark location.
