they have a picture of a “notional scheme” and it looks great.

isn’t there stuff that gets dropped by one ship in rotterdam and then picked up by another one, ie rotterdam is where it gets moved from a long-distance cargo ship to a short-distance one or visa versa, i mean i don’t know i’m asking.

    other things that are wrong:

it looks so messy and the exterior seems to be impossible to keep clean

    it is cluttered inside

it is hard to work out how to move between the ground floor and level one

its hard to know what level two is for

    its ulgy

awkward circulation space, feels unpleasant inside in way that for eg the jarvis centre doesn’t

isn’t it wierd about hotels, historically the hotel was one of the nicest building in any town, now that is rarely true and jurys must be one of the worst.

on a related note, i never understand why people complain about an-taisce objecting, their role is to articulate the heritage perspective, abp then take that into consideration when deciding. if you don’t like the decision then your fight is with abp for agreeing with an taisce, not with an taisce for making the arguement in the first place.

as i understand it, its a commercial development, with some sort of subsidy coming as a surcharge on leases is the area.

this is a hard one, the building doesn’t look too bad, but it is too high for the street and for the gaiety. on the other hand, south king street is desparate, it looks like it would have been good planning to allow it.

So, this was discussed in the times today, it makes it sound very nice, some buildings, but, in return, views of the cricket pitch.

it is hard to see how this would work in practice, if the buildings have any depth the views will be narrow slices, maybe the buildings could have triangular footprints, or, even better, the development might create viewing platforms back from the current line of the wall and rail.

the article also appears to confirm that the dcc have indicated that they won’t allow the planned demolishions on pearse street which is good. also, if, as is possible, coach parking is moved to pearse street, tcd will be glad of edwarding shopfronts, they will be able to lease them out to carrols, blarney woolen mills and so on.

he designed the holocaust museum in berlin and, most famously, won the competition to design the replacement for the twin towers in nyc. he is now active all over, in particular he has a dramaric new extension being built for the ROM in toronto.

he previously designed a building for ireland, a ship-like mixed-use building for carlise peir in dun laoighre, but lost the competition for this commission. this time he was more successful. the developer each time is the same.

great idea phil. what would be good would be a great buildings list, so the rule would be that every year the committee would add say four buildings to the list and remove say one and over time it would be refined into a definitive list of great buildings in ireland.
