So here is my story along these lines, I had some people visiting from Singapore and they all wanted to see Bewley’s, heard about the atmosphere, open all night, fully of lively characters, historic, etc, I brought them and they loved the open fires and the windows, but god was the food and organization embarrassing. The staff were always lovely, but the way it was organized was terrible. I used to use Bewley’s quite often, it is between work and my son’s creche, and it was always, always, infuriating.

The reason Bewley’s didn’t make money was because Cambell’s weren’t happy with a moderate income, they wanted a substancial income and so ended up making a loss. If the city bought it, I am sure it could be run at a profit, just not as great a profit as a clothes shop would make in the same place.

just on a factual point, by concrete monster to you mean the sports hall and animal house Luas hall? there is permission already here to build between on the funny shaped land between the building and Pearse street. i don’t know what the new building will do to the parapet height or indeed the building line. the other concrete monster is the Simon Perry at the NE corner of the rugby pitch.

yeah so further to this, i walked along here again yesterday and i don’t see the problem with providing an entrance way through the bike factory building retaining both it and the nuzum brothers shop next door. the bike factory building has quite a large opening currently bricked up, surely this could be incorporated into to provide a rather stylish entrance, as good, anyway, as the one that will replace it. in the pictures the new enterance way doesn’t look to be much more than one story high either. as for the other end of the street, there is already an enterance here, not very grand and always locked, between the six shops with fancy edwardian shop fronts and the rest of the terrace. it can’t be beyond the wit of man to open up an enterance here while doing less damage to this rather fine, albeit abused, street front.

it seems hard to believe the same planning gain couldn’t be achieved with a plan retaining more of the original terrace. However, moving the shopfronts is something of a comprimize and I am glad at least of this. Does anyone know if the Nuzum Bros facade is also to be moved. I find it harder to understand the demolision at this end of the terrace, surely the replacement gateway is quite small as far as I can make out, and with effort, could be incorporated. The new building will be fine, it will be a big improvement from the College Park side.

but didn’t he write an article suggesting that the docklands should be taller, espessially along the river, basically for all the reasons you mention. you have to be careful not to mix up opposition to the original spencer dock proposal, which was yucky and opposition to building higher in this area.

when was the last time you were on major st east of common st by the way, it isn’t urban but it is urban village in atmosphere.

kefu, i don’t agree that the IMMA has been a failure in many ways, I have always found it a fine gallery and a good use for the building. i also like the forced change to the NGI, having the ballroom in the middle of the restaurant is such fun.

P11 Comms, the people in East Wall were right, the proposed development for Spencer Dock was a dog, too bland, too ugly, too single use, too hard to service, not sustainable. The arguements they used were too blunt, they made it seem that they thought any skyscrapers in the area would be wrong, but the fact of the matter is, a better proposal, still containing high rise elements, would have provoced only a token objection.

Of course, we have to balance function with other aspects of the city, we can’t sacrifice everything to finding a transport solution, nor can we ignore the transport needs of the city. Bulldoze the Customs House and the city becomes a less desirable place to live.

you still haven’t explained what’s wrong with it. the loop line is not going to move, so we need a bridge there. the loop line bridge is made of metal, yes, but apart from that, what’s not to like? if we are to have new bridges, lets have new crossings.

so come on sue, the loop line bridge blocks the view of the river and is covered in ads, apart from that, what’s wrong with it? i think its a fine handsome victorian bridge typical of the great age of railway engineering and as good as anything that could replace it.

trams in london used to have a slot in the middle of the tracks with a live track beneath the surface. it must have been a pain in arse for getting clogged up with crap. i don’t know how it was drained.

so the thing is we are taking the buses as a given and trying to reroute the luas, maybe this is the wrong way around. do 30% (or whatever) of Dublin Bus services really have to come that way? is there are rule against having buses anywhere in sight of Leinster house? can more buses use Pearse Street, particularily if TCD opened up a more obvious cross College pedestrian route (hopefully without knowing down N&bros).

now it would be a real shame if it became retail, all the wood, the stain glass, that must be listed in a way that would make it hard to convert it into retail.

so, are bewley’s incompetant or evil?
