ParticipantC is on Western Way; it is a fun and mysterious sight.

ParticipantWell the Capel St Bridge isn’t called by its proper name; the local habit of renaming things goes beyond the now tiresome rhyming monument names, I am sure Hapenny Bridge was a vulgar name too.

ParticipantActually the spike was the last time anything lost its official name, I have never heard an alternative name for the Joyce or O’Casey bridges used in normal discussion. I am sure this will be either the Beckett Bridge or the Macken St. Bridge or the Guild St Bridge.

ParticipantAm I right in thinking that the Irish Times property supplement has dropped the planning section at the back?

ParticipantThe council is giving in so that Parking Lot owners won’t lose business? Assholes.

ParticipantI like the Wolfe Tone, but more importantly I admire its ambition: this is self-consciously unambitious.

ParticipantIt is such a waste with all this money; a substantial quantity, being spent on these boring boring sculptures. We used to be so good at this, when Edward Delaney was casting the Wolfe Tone for the Green it was a big public thing with discussion and controversy and an amazing result. Now we get this endless procession of dull, nice, realist bronzes that are neither interesting nor exceptionally good, compare this to a genuinely good realist sculpture: Salmon in TCD for eg and weep.

ParticipantOh well done: Botanic Gardens round behind the Lily House, currently closed, undergoing or maybe pending, renovation, picture here:

ParticipantI actually felt guilty Graham when I looked back at your TCD door, you had pointed out that that photo wasn’t from a park, this one is, or, at least, something that is similar to a park. I have no idea what is through the door, though I suspect it might be a secret command centre from which northside will be run when the bridges are blown.

ParticipantNo, not Trinity, the College’s mysterious steps already appeared on page 17 of this thread.

ParticipantWhere is this mysterious underground doorway?
notjim
ParticipantBut has anyone been inside? I know, I know, its a terrible thing and no one should support it, I absolutely agree, but, if you do go in to this 4d cinema, what does that mean, can you see any of the original Carlton decor.
notjim
ParticipantWhen I walked down OCS last night there was feverish work on the Carlton, almost like it was intended to reopen it as an amusements or some such. Anyone know about this?

Participantwasn’t there a separate application for the hotel and no.42?

ParticipantRegarding my comments above about TCD and DIT, from today’s indo . . .
“Trinity College, Dublin, is engaged in another round of secret talks – this time with the Dublin Institute of Technology. It has already upset the other universities who were unaware of its negotiations with UCD, which resulted in Wednesday’s announcement of an Innovation Alliance. The separate discussions with DIT are looking at all possible forms of potential alliance such as joint degrees, shared services and even joint staff appointments. The options under review include everything from a Memorandum of Understanding ‘to the inclusion of DIT as a separate autonomous institution under the university’. A confidential report to the heads of both institutions sets out areas of potential future collaboration …”

I don’t know why they don’t just put me in charge.

ParticipantThey keep moving forward on this, a new video, plans for a community garden, tendering for the temporary school etc

ParticipantI often walk through this and, while the footfall is low during most of the day, it does get quite crowded at lunchtime, the little noodle place is packed for example. The retail has been surprisingly stable, nothing has closed yet as far as I can see.

ParticipantOh dear, from the tribune article:

ParticipantI hope they show some steel with this and do it.
