Collinsky, I totally agree! Lot of mucking around! I like the idea of a statue/sculpture, monument, as long as tasteful for Brian Boru at Clontarf, not be a while yet! Might be ready for 2018!!!

What I was trying to say is this country is crying out for strong leadership, not bbbbbbbbbertie or Garret dithering, being all things to all men. At least Charlie showed leadership, and wasn’t afraid to make decisions, whether you liked him or not, we live in a free country! With strong leadership come better things.

ah Rory, Charlie was no Hitler, you’re getting carried away.

Corruption is and was a part of European life. Look at Haughey’s opposite numbers, Mitterand, Kohl, Anderotti….

All were in the soup with something or the other.. The last I heard Anderotti was going to prison.. And then what about Papandriou of Greece????

Irish people tend to think Charlie was exceptional… Yeah maybe for creating and kickstarting the tiger, at least he appreciated architecture unlike bbbbertie

Poor old Ritchie, he wanted Monument of Light, I would have gone with that. I like the Irish language version, but only as it’s official translation. Spire better than some of other crazy ideas.

Roll on the unveiling and lighting.. no news on that then… I think Midsummer’s Day would be ideal.. this would give all concerned, plenty of time, given their speed. Only kiddin!

I agree, one thing Haughey had an eye and a genuine interest for was architecture. Some great jobs initiated by him the early 90s.. Grand refurbishments of Royal Hospital, IMMA, Dublin Castle, Government Buildings etc.. What have we to show for Celtic Tiger… National Stadium, Connference Centre, Metro.. New Carlton??????

I see Seamus Brennan is off to Madrid on Thursday, a very good move!

Madrid’s extension took 3 years and is very long, maybe he might want to negotiate with the Spaniards? I was in Bilbao last year and the metro there is superb.

Excellent website on everything metro around Europe and full info at:

I think the RPA have been reckless in their costs and calculations, they should be brought to account asap!

Few suggestions for Cork (Ireland’s 3rd city)..

Isn’t Michael Martin, Minister for health, why not move his department to one of the quays in the centre along with say Department of the Marine or Social and Community affairs?

A cultural quarter with a national museum of something… The national conference centre, call the opera house, the national opera house? How about an aquarium etc….? I’m thinking Malmo or Gothenburg here, examples of real decentralisation

Take complete advantage of tax breaks/urban renewal etc..

Very important is a focal point a la Spire for city centre, say a sculpture, architectual competition, remember an EIS this time.. Take complete advantage of the island thing, paved the roads a different colour, red or green to define it as a place apart

And finally and most importantly clean the place up and clamp down on the scum giving the place a bad name!

It could do with a catalyst, i.e. a cultural quarter, or a drinking bit to bring in the English money, it is lucky to have a good airport…… It certainly doesn’t need loads of plans. I was in Cork in 1988, 1992 and about six months ago…. nothing ever changes and the city centre is rough.

Might I suggest also that the National Conference Centre and possibly a big government department and a few headquarters be located in the centre of town?

I find Cork city a depressing place, it needs a little tlc, proper development and investment not stupid ‘thingys’ on Patrick Street or endless development plans.

Incredible… I see there are clocks on these ‘things’. Will give them a year of proper working order and then no maintenance thereafter..

I can’t believe they commissioned such sh*ite… pardon the language…. Makes the new look Roches in Dublin look alright.. Has the world gone mad… and to think so much talent and competition out there, do they not run competitions anymore?

    Big sigh…

completely agree. New and bolder thinking required. If we need to go beyond our shores to get the best deal, so be it! Too much money and greed is the cancer in the Irish construction industry. We can’t afford to write blank cheques. IT’S OUR MONEY!!!!!

I agree the new Roches is worse than the old one. No imagination or decent materials used in its design! As for the new look Ilac, don’t bother leave it as it is……………..

Personally I think the corpo had a lot to answer for, the pillar was up 44 years after independence 1922-1966, with the Admiral up there, why didn’t they re-name it.. the Dublin Pillar and take him down……..?

Not that i agree with the ‘IRA’/Army blowing it up.. Corpo being lazy as usual… usually takes em 44 years to do anything…
