Who is responsible for this ? Its incredibly bad. Maybe some of the Dublin Photoshopers could help the pathetic soul who created those images , and give them a a few pointers.
As it stands its very embarassing for Ireland that some developer would dare proudly show that sort of thing in public.

Belfast is certainly no better off for its tall buildings. I do not just mean the sixties and seventies stuff, that sandy colured lump behind the Waterfront Hall is really awful, the re-clad Europa eugh ! It certainly illustrates the point that tall buildings need to be of a very high standard of architectural quality, because they are so bloody visible.

There was another “Irish” office with work on display at the Venice Biennale. VMX Architects, Amsterdam headed by Don Murphy from Cork was one of the 5 nominated Dutch entries. The Dutch selection was made up of the 5 finalists for the NAI Prize (Netherlands Architecture Institute) for young Dutch architecture . Their bicycle shed at Central Station, Amsterdam was exhibited.

Have you looked at a book by Niall McCullough and Valerie Mulvin called “A Lost Tradition: The Nature of Architecture in Ireland” (1897)

That remark about the John Hancock Tower was so inane. Why does nearly every discussion have to get onto the subject of height. Height on its own is not an aesthetic quality. What is this obsession for with height in Dublin. The general standard of appraisal of architecture by many of the contributors to this website is embarrassing.
Back to the Horseshow house, well I stopped drinking there when I was about 17 because the crowd was a bit young. 19th century yes,but I do not remember it being anything very special. What is the prososed building like ? is it intersesting ? original ?

People in on this site seem to want tall buildings in Dublin as if “tallness” was a quality in itself. Tall building can be just as mediocre as groundscrapers but because of their conspicuousness they can do a lot more damage. They tend to become landmarks and affect far more peoples live than just their users. For this reason they should be vetted thoroughly for quality. But the problem in Ireland is that there is no vetting for architectural quality excepting through competitions. This also is the reason how scemes such as Spencer Docks come about.

The present scheme by STW is hardly a radical departure. Nevertheless the scheme by Kevin Roche was really awful stuff churned up by his C-team. It seems the scale and nature of huge developments such as this are the main problem. What architects would people have nominated instead to enclose the hundreds of thousands of square feet of Spencer dock? Would it have a vastly different result if the same programme stayecd the same ?

The problem with Ireland is that there is no architectural planning, just zoning. Developers get hold of a site a try to cram as much square feet as possible (wouldn’t you) And the usual fight begins. If there were an existing plan for this area giving indications of scale and amenities to be provided things might be somewhat different

Thanks for sending that Paul . Alas my problem is that when i go to that link the Sunday Times demands a loginame and password. Sorry for being such a bother but I just want that one article and not a whole years worth of that paper.
