I hope the new Master Plan doesn’t have any trees at all in O’Connell Street, because then it begins to become a great space once again. The trees in O’Connell Street are what makes it feel like a good spot to go knacker drinking at night in the cold!

you architects may not be aware of this but i heard that trees are not only usefull as ‘architectural features’ or ‘good spots for knacker drinking’ to to be placed at our astetic disgression, but they also provide us with oxygen, so we can breathe !. Should we not be trying to maximize the number of ‘c02 to 02 convertors’ we have on our city streets, after all these are essential to the sucessful running of any city. so why are u picking on these poor defenceless trees, what about cars surely these do alot more to detract from the beauty than a few trees. is there nothing worse than the entire street cloged with what is it 6 lane of car and trucks for most of the day.

I hope the new Master Plan doesn’t have any cars at all in O’Connell Street, because then it begins to become a great space once again

There are a number of areas I’d like to see cars removed from the city. It seems such a contentious issue though at times – lots of auto-addicts out there it seems.

tanks 4 the guidelines suggestion.. I will check it out.

As regards the describing the structures under architectural, historic, scientific or artistic merits. I don’t think if would fall into any of these categories .
Here is why I am wondering if a structure can be listed for social reasons if the are essential to a community activity and even local ‘ritual’ or even that they are part of the spirit of a locality.
The structures in question are pretty recent (last 50 years), are vernacular of no (?) architectural merit. But the have for the last 50 years, been build and maintained voluntarily by the local community, and are essential for a popular local activity.
Could it be argued that though these may not be seen as architectural gems, they are structures that are part of a locality’s history, and if removed will denied people of a civil amenity, and remove a linchpin is the local community ?

    Dearest Le Architino,
I have never denied my past of ‘crack whore-ism’, but with the level of ‘crack’ and ‘whores’ in Dublin I sincerely doubt you were making anything Public.
yes, we have crossed paths in the past, when LA architino was a valued customer of both aforementioned ‘crack’ and ‘whore’ activities.
( you got a great imagination with the james bond stuff)
as for the ‘selling tail and chicken heads, what i do to my body is my own business, I could never harm another living thing let alone a cute little birdie. anyway i am a strict veggie and have never had much to do with dead chicks.
Please ‘ill architino’ you may hound me for my use of drugs, and my sexual lifestyle, but please do not accuse me of been a ‘FLESH EATER’ that is the lowest…

Anyway do these people who are most greatly effected by this urban monstrosity we have created ( ie junkies, pro’s and the homeless) , not have there place in the discussion ?

    I bid you good day.

do not be fooled by ‘el architino’ if that is even there real name……..
can you not see behind the mask?, ‘el architino’ is a fraud, can you not see that the drawings they put forward as work of their own hand are merly cad drawing converted using Squiggle®, [ http://www.secondsourceuk.com/squiggle.htm ] if you are interested to in true works of art from the pen on the web, may i direct you to http://www.biro-web.com .

    this guy is amazing

look around you almost every bit of space these days is telling you/selling you someting, you may not be able to afford to advertise on billboards, but stencilling allows you do put ‘your message there for free’.
maybe not too much in dublin, but i love when you can walk around cities and see this creativeness all over everyting in the urban realm, this call tell you a lot about the people who occupy these spaces. also you can ofen see the different areas where different ‘urban’ artists frequent,

Is it art though? Any cretin with a stencil and a spray can can leave behind an image. True artistic graffiti without the use of stencils must rank as superior

Any cretin with a spray can can leave behind an image too, dont tink you can say one is better that the other. stencils reqire great thought and skill too, tinking of a good idea, designing, printing, cuting, and putting it up in an effective space.

re the car & caravan, i dont know if it is the same artist but i did see some images very similar…… there was one of an u-bahn train pretruding from the ground in the middle of a town square and another the same but just the top of a submarine busting out of the ground… very nice

I agree we shouldn’t copy England, germany, france and USA. But where do you think we should start developing our own cultures architecture. Most of this countries examples of fine architecture over the last few centuries is classical which was built by or as a response to foreign rule in this country, and mostly by foreign designers. so surly this cant be a precedence. Before this we has the Norse, Vikings, invade and bring the culture and customs as well as building style. All major style can be accredited to foreign influences. surly even Christianity is alien to this land and must be seen as an international style. Even the Celts and beaker people probably the first settlers in this country brought there own traditions, to our country. so does anyone have any ideas what should inspire or inform Irish
architecture? Or what should we refer to, if anything when designing in this country?.
i have my own ideas and I am sure so does everybody else so lets start discussing them its time the built enviroment was given back to “na pobál”

Why all to cr iticism of the construction company ?, I ask this genuinely. as I have only seen the pictures posted.
    >>>>>>Ergo, I ask where does technology fit into this farce?
Why `dis the construction and technology??
From what I can see its the design that is at fault, if anything.
This isn’t only aimed at the designers but the people who assess what is needed, those who set the brief (corpo..).
The bridge looks like a copy of the Ha`Penny.
    Why, Why, Why?
Surely the Ha`penny bridge was built to get people passed a barrier (the liffey).
Now we have two even bigger barriers the congested quays that not even mentioning the health impacts of having people standing waiting at arms distance from a major traffic artery.
Maybe the bridge should have spanned the roads too….
Surely we have come along way in design terms, then to be designing things not by assessing the problems that we face now and in the future, but blindly imitating an old solution to a totally different problem.

    Ya i agree,
the corpo have done some great projects in the past. But the same problems can been seen as on the topic of C.I.E . so these flat are been let run down just like Bus`R`Us. Maybe they could also reinvent? themselves like cie.
As for the stories of the apartment blocks that have poped up over the last few year.
as these use many standard (cheapest) material eg doors, fixings, furiture, fire places even fridges and cookers.
They have the effect of making you feel Very “at home” in other peoples (boxes)apartmants!!!

Fogive me if i say that maybe its not the fault of the building,or the method. The people involved have lost touch, instead of the expert masterbuilder, the buildings are being put together by the aforementioned ” Fat swearing men”. And being designed by people who probally care less about the effect on it environs and users.

One of the most inspiring bridges i have ever
seen , is Future Systems pontoon bridge @ Canary Wharf, London.
This bridge was entirely prefabricated, and also transported to site on a lorry in two pieces and floated into place. The only work that needed to be done on site was the droping of concrete slabs to anchor it.
Just because it was prefabricated doesn`t detract from the beauty to the structure,if anything it adds to it.
And along with many of the other projects(Lords media center, Pembrokshire house) which embrace prefabrication technology, is an architecture that is about as far from boring as you can get!!

I know this is a bit off the point, but
is it possible for the Corpo to demand compulsory purchase of a site if it was illegally demolished ?
