ParticipantI’ve been looking at some of Dan Heller’s skyline pictures. They’re quite impressive compared to my dismal picture.

ParticipantHere’s one I took a few weeks ago. Stitched them together quickly for the thread.
Dublin’s skyline.

Have to say it’s quite industrial-looking, particularly the colour. Compares poorly with the James Joyce bridge.
Yes, quite industrial and drab in that pic 🙁 I’ll have to wait to see it myself though

ParticipantOn the subject of the trees in College Green… those trees really need to be removed from BOI.
This pic that I posted in the O’C thread will show how intrusive they are. It’s impossible to get a decent picture of BOI present day. The clutter!

ParticipantWell if I didn’t get a response from them I would have just asked one of the onsite contractors.. I pass through there quite frequently.

ParticipantI got in touch with the DDDA yesterday and had this reply:
Dear Morlan, Thank you for your Email. The black barriers will be staying when the bridge is finished as they are the fenders to stop large craft from hitting the bridge when it is open. However they will not stick out of the water so far, as when the tide is higher than mean tide, they will float. At the moment they are pinned up.

Bluefoam, where is that entrance? You walk up beyond White Rock and it’s tucked away in the rocky area there. Quite obvious if you have a look.

ParticipantI do remember an incident when I was at St. Andrews College in Booterstown many years ago.
During a rugby game on one of the main pitches a young lad but his foot through the ground. A tunnel was found which had its roof supported by old wooden beams. It turned out to be a very old tunnel running from the coast at the DART station all the way up to the school. It was thought to be a smugglers tunnel for shifting illegally imported booze from the beach there. I can’t seem to find anymore info about it.
Also, isn’t there a tunnel running from Killiney beach to Dalkey Island or is this an old myth?

ParticipantThe problem is that the Green line trams are longer than the Red Line’s. A normal Green line tram is longer than the span of the Liffey Bridges.
The only way around this would be to have a special signalling system for the trams crossing, eg. you would have to clear the whole traffic from the Quays and the Bridge to allow the tram to traverse unobstructed. This would be chaos.

ParticipantWhat will happen to O’C bridge when the paths on O’C St. lower have been widened? If you look at this photo they appear to have changed the road markings on the bridge again. Will the footpaths on the bridge be widened to match the new width of O’C’s paths? Maybe the centre island will be widened too?
As far as I know, the bridge hasn’t been included in the O’C rejuvenation project.

· St Stephens Green West will be open to vehicular traffic from the junction of Cuffe St./Harcourt St./St. Stephen’s Green South as far as York Street and from the top of Grafton Street as far a Glover’s Alley. The stretch of St. Stephen’s Green West from York Street to Glover’s Alley (i.e. in front of the Royal College of Surgeons) will be closed to traffic. A new plaza will be constructed here.:D/ That’s great news.
Although, I was hoping that they would have put a plaza at the top of Grafton/SC North, and maybe move the turning circle up just a small bit towards Dawson St – It doesn’t have to be slap bang right beside the Luas stop! Anyone think so?

Most people would percieve it to be the heart of the city, even over O’ Cll St.I definately do
And agreed, it really does have the finest buildings in the capital there.

did you read this article:http://scotland.archiseek.com/news/2004/000220.html
the cool thing is they are intending to make a pedestrian crossing the whole width of the square.
can we have this for college green and for the o’connell st plaza?
I don’t see how this could work.
Lothian Rd is the Edinburgh equivalent of Dame street, it’s the second busiest thoroughfare in the city. Are they planning on placing traffic light at each end of the square or just at one point? Either way, it would make the plaza completely redundant because of the volume of traffic that goes through there, unlike O’C street where they have restricted traffic to busses and taxis, blocking traffic to make use of the proposed plaza would seriously disrupt traffic here, I’ve seen what it’s like during the war protests last year.
As for proposed public spaces in Dublin, we NEED more of them. O’C plaza is all well and good but I can’t see myself going into town and chilling there just yet! Take a look at the amount of public spaces in Glasgow, it’s shocking.
Convert the top of Grafton Street / Stephen’s Green into public space
Pedestrianise Exchequer St, Dury St, William St, Clarendon St & Chatam Row, Stephen St. and remove the three car parks in that area.
Somewhere on Dame St., have a plaza of similar size to O’C plaza to allow the large volume of pedestrians to get from Grafton to Templebar.
It would be great to see the whole College Green area turned into a plaza but I can’t see it happening anytime soon.
