What the hell was wrong with the 3 buildings that were there before? They looked fine to me.

    Yikes! Drool or what! 🙂

    Indeed! 🙂

These lamps below are standard all around the city but they vary slightly depending on where you are.
These ones below are outside the government buildings. They are well looked after, in fact most of them look brand new. They are adorned with the city’s coat of arms (vertical stripes for Catalonia) topped with the King’s crown.

Here is a different version of the lamp. Oddly, some of the crown prongs the lamps appear warped and bent. I don’t know if this is weathering or perhaps Gaudi gave them his organic treatment. 🙂 I really don’t think these are his lamps though.

This Chinese lamp belongs to the former umbrella shop on La Rambla. I can’t find much info on it unfortunately but the shop owner was obviously not short of cash at the time.
Look at his fierce fangs and fiery beard, his sharp claws gripping the bamboo. The crafting on the bamboo is spectacular also.

Anyway, that’s me all out of Barcelona lamps!

It’s simply known as “The tower” and yes it was/is an industrial building but is mainly used for crafts/restaurants now. The Trinity (formerly IDA) Enterprise Centre was built around it. I work about 50m from it, so i can let yee know when work on nearby towers begins and post some photos.
I’ll be very interested to see how they actually construct alto vetro. The site is incredibly small – footprint is about that of a 3bed semi, and there isn’t anywhere for them to put stores/machinery. I imagine given this fact it will probably need to be substantially prefabricated and just hoisted/assembled on site… we will see!

I was just going to ask what those red brick buildings were. They take up a massive amount of space there, an absolute goldmine. I’m sure in the next 5 years they will be flattened and swallowed by luxery apartments.

You’re right about the Vetro footprint. I was inspecting it the other day and it I find it hard to believe a tower could fit there.

what is that tallish brown building to the left of alto vetro?

I’m not sure. It looks like an early 20th century industrial block. I quite like it.

Spencer dock will work well most of the buildings will feature setbacks bringing the height up, critically it will be a pleasant user environment where all the buildings have unshadowed natural light. There is no question in my mind that this development is a lot better than the application that was refused in 2000.

What was refused, Thomond? I’m not saying that the development is all bad, of course not. Most of the developments of of very high quality and I like them.. just wished it was a tad denser.

Graham, hope you don’t mind that I stray off from Dublin for a bit. I couldn’t resist posting up some of my other lamp shots. 🙂 I’m sure you’ll like them.

Gaudi’s first ever municipal commision. The fabulous lanterns in Plaça Reial.

Look at those evil heads. These are the lamps outside Government Buildings in Plaça Sant Jaume.

You call that a lamp? This is a lamp! Have you ever seen anything like it?

The following diagram gives us a good idea of building height for Spencer Dock and Point Village. A depressing 4/5 floors for the majority.

“In promoting the central spine on Major Street, it is recognised that buildings should be of particular urban scale which give importance to the street and clearly enlose the major spaces at Station Square and Point Square.”

I don’t get it. In promoting the central spine (Major St.) surely the buildings should be generaly higher than 5 floors.

An email from the DDDA regarding Spencer Dock density (or lack thereof).

It is the Authority’s objective to secure a high density of development on the Spencer Dock site in line with Government guidelines and the Docklands Area Master Plan. The development is up to 9 storeys of residential along the quayside and 10 storeys towers along the canal, with a 44m high (12 storeys) landmark building in the centre of the site. The National Conference Centre will also be 42m in height fronting onto the quays.

Hmm, nothing I didn’t know already. 12 stories is hardly a landmark tower either. They should double the height.

What do you all think of the Montevetro block? Not sure I like the top two floors much, a bit boring. I don’t know if this is even going ahead. They haven’t even gotten rid of the burnout warehouse on the site there.

And what about the Alto Vetro building. I see they have boared off that whole site, wonder if they’re going ahead with it,

It really boils my blood. I would have been happy with a floor height of at least 8/9. That should be the absolute minimum.

Who set the standard of 6 floors for all blocks in IFSC 2 and the docklands? ABP, DDDA?

Yes. After he graduated from college his first commission was to design and build the street lamps you see in Barcelona today. It’s possible that it’s some sort of shatter proofing wire.. just a thought.

    I love this lamp thread.

When I was in Barcelona there a few weeks ago some of Gaudi’s hanging street lamps reminded me of the early 20th century lamps in Dublin.

This one I snapped close to Gaudi’s La Pedrera.

The architecture in Barcelona would make you sick. Notice its football like globe 🙂 This is a shot of a 3 globe lamp although, the globes are identical city-wide.

I totally agree with you, Graham, about the level of detail in the Micheal Collins film. They certainly made an effort.

i would hope that a newer building on this site would be the same height or higher again.

This is an awfully cramped area of the city and it doesn’t look like Hawkin’s fugly sister, An Post, is going to be demolished anytime soon. Had both buildings been pencilled for demolishment then a whole city block could have been developed into something worth while.

As for the replacement structure, I’m not sure anything above the current height of Hawkins is going to look great here. Ulster Bank has already sealed the deal in relation to maximum height in this area of the quays. What a shame.. 🙁

This would be a dream come true. How would people like to see the street layout? LUAS down the centre, two traffic lanes and widened footpaths on either side? Westmorland has ‘ridiculous’ potential to rival Grafton and Henry Streets.

The problem I find with this stretch is the horrible death trap junctions at College Green and O’Connell Bridge. These areas need give priority to the pedestrians. I think the whole College Green area should be turned into a GPO type plaza, which would calm the traffic there. O’Connell Bridge and the two junctions on either side of the quays should also be given the plaza treatment designed primarily for pedestrians. I think this would encourage people to shop on either side of the city.

I hope not. It’s quite a tacky name to be honest – like New York’s ‘Freedom’ Tower.

Christ, that’s fn awful 🙁 Please god don’t let that be built. Can’t they at least use red brick? Much of their work is highly depressing.

I don’t know why they changed it to hospital grey, I preferred the green. Wasn’t everything dark blue at one stage a long time a go? And now the signage is black and orange for English and Irish.. There’s a design flaw in that the orange text vanishes at night because of the sodium lighting, you can barely read it.

And the southside.. poor old Shankill station, an awful building. I was hoping they’d knock it down. Somebody tried to burn down the temporary access ramp a few weeks ago – can’t wait to see what the scumbags do when everything is finished. There’s plenty of CCTV cameras that aren’t caged and easily accessible. Not to mention the highly graffitiable new signage.

Why is it that Dalkey and Gleanageary get nice patterned brickwork on the platforms and the rest of the stations get the old dollop of tarmac?
