Was down there a few days ago. There is a lot of activity on the site. Pipe laying and pile-driving.

I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned the Fr. Pat Noise Memorial.

Yes, thanks Devin. ๐Ÿ™‚ I had a glimpse of it from the DART at Grand Canal Dock yesterday evening.

In your first picture it looks like they have started on these:

Seems to be a large series of shapes that appear to sink into the ground. Seating and mingle areas, maybe? I’m probably wrong though. What are they?
Judging by the surface design of two shapes in that first photo, it looks like they will deter the skateboarders anyway.

I can’t see the old GCD chimney stack in your second photo ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I assume it’s just hidden behind that 6 story shaft? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Metro and Luas connector? Jaysus, I’ll be on a zimmer frame by then and probably won’t care.

Yes, you’re right about the bridge. The footpaths on either side can now be widened. Everthing takes SO.. SO.. LONG.. in this city.

I will rest when I see West Morland, Dolier, College Gr. and Dame street all renovated and designed to link the PEOPLE from south to north. Not Dublin Bus.

The Spire is a waste of money if it continues to look as it does.

    Taken by: http://flickr.com/photos/alistercoyne/26134125/

The Spire has to be an important and focal part of the city centre. The whole sculpture MUST be floodlit from top to bottom in order for it to have a notable impact to tourists and locals at night.

As it stands, 80% of the sculpture is practically invisible at night. The illuminated top part of the monument looks, and to be totally honest, stupid. ๐Ÿ™

A few simple floodlights mounted on the GPO and surrounding buildings would have an immense impact on the monument for little cost.

The many comments I’ve read about the Spire (from non-Dubliners) over at Flickr.com suggests that the monument is seriously underperforming at night.

So what’s going to happen? The DCC will do nothing for as long as possible. They will probably employ the cheapest electricians in town to bang up a few 500W floodlights instead of hiring professional lighting designers.

Oh Dublin. So much potential but nobody’s arsed really, are they?

I’m disappointed with this street and in particular the central median. Isn’t it meant for people to mingle and chill? At the moment it seems like a safety corridor for people to walk through quickly – “Take your photos of the Spire and then you’d better be on your way”.

Out of all the cities I’ve visited, Barcelona’s main though fare “Las Ramblas” has a lot in common with O’C St.

I think the new design of O’Connell street is flawed. The central median should have been a lot wider and the footpaths on either side didn’t need to be as wide. There’s nowhere for tourists and locals to sit and enjoy the street.

    Have a look at this:

You wouldn’t think that busy traffic was streaming down either side of it.

Las Ramblas is the same width as O’C St., perhaps narrower in places, but it works because the central median is wide enough to cater for caf

Does it actually grow outward at the top? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

If they’re going to build something rubbish, they might as well keep it simple.

    Here’s a quick chop:

It’s go to be the thinest highrise I’ve ever seen. That thing will be swaying all over the gaf. :p

When the new bridge is built, it will make for a good photo with the towers either side of it. If you stand on the east link toll bridge, you can imagine how things might look in a few years.

It would be cheaper but it wouldn’t solve the problem of lack of space inside the tower – that’s why they’re going to pull it.

I doubt they could building higher than 16 floors and it would probably have to be slender – not worth their while. They would probably opt for a bulky 8 story building taking up the whole footprint of the site. ๐Ÿ™

Graham, thanks for the model pics. Can you enlighten me as to where exactly on the new street the faรƒยงade will be moved to? Does it wrap around the corner from the original? I can’t see it in the models. ๐Ÿ™‚
I’ve searched with no avail – Can someone tell me what happened to the top of the tower?

PAUL. There’s a typo on the Arnott’s page : “Thje top of the tower…”

I’m not sure what to think about this. I’d be all in favour of a facelift but if it does get knocked, its wacky, oriental roof will be sorely missed. ๐Ÿ™

Here’s a merged together pic of Dublin’s skyline. As you can see, the demoliton of Liberty hall would be a great loss to our familiar and drab skyline.

It also forms a nice gateway on the Liffey with O’Connell Bridge House.

The all too familiar postcard picture.

It’s quite dominating when shot from certain angles with a telephoto

Relecting off the Liffey at sundown

It’s quite a nasty piece of work up close however. No better than the other 60s crap that plagues the city,

The statue itself would have been moved by now if not for the bombing. Nelson has no relevance to Irish people or culture. It was suggested at one stage to replace Nelson with President Kennedy or the Sacred Heart!

What does the Spire represent again?

Is it just me or is this just a bit of a pipe dream? It seems like something that might happen in 2100. Certainly not in our life time. We’re only just managing to add a third lane to a section of the M50.

Don’t get me wrong it sounds amazing but entirely unrealistic.
