Smithfield should have been extended to the river….. removing one apartment block would have sorted that….

I think the tarmac is temporary until the paving crews get to it in their schedule.

Nelson’s Column was a stumpy badly proportioned structure. Reconstructing it would be an act of folly, looking backwards rather than forwards.

This is interesting, and very odd. The existing building looks disgusting so this would be a good gesture. It is for sale as well as faras I know

If there were regular columns here, it would be the Architectural Press in Ireland.

Whats the traffic like here now? I’ll bet the visitor numbers far surpass any print run.

Bollards will keep out joyriders. Gates are an over-reaction to a problem. Its a NIMBY issue…. not in my back yard

I always said that the one thing about studying design or architecture or having an interest in the subjects was that it gave you an appreciation but no way to afford it.

The rich dont often deserve to be wealthy.

Actually if Roche weas providing a master plan for the area, simply designing key buildings and having the rest designed by other firms, we would end up with a mucj more interesting area. Roche can design good buildings, he’s proven that in the past. But they were smaller projects (one building or a small group) rather that what amounts to several city blocks.

I’d prefer to see him concetrate on the Convention Centre and the masterplan and allow other architects of note design individual buildings. That way, we could have an are that we could be proud of architecturally.

Yeah, but rebuilding this is going to cost him more than a fine ever would… the cost will last forever in terms of lost sq. footage + rents and the chance for even bigger open floor space in the offices… and thats what developers want… the biggest floor possible x the most storeys possible. forcing him to put back the building although descending to pastiche is a means of punishment not conservation.

As far as I know, this is the backup plan that they’ll go for if the locals seem edgey or if Spencer Dock gets the thumnbs down.
