Good to hear from students – I’m a childcare practitioner currently working in development of services – service management as well as supporting applications for capital works – after years of draughty community halls and make-do premises, I’ts great that there’s Government funding to support groups who are looking to build creches that not only look good, but really work as childcare buildings. Cof, if you have any childcare services nearby, talk to managers / staff about how they would like their buildings to be, or you can e-mail me on solutioneering@eircom.net.

I’m currently working with NDP Equal Opportunities Childcare Programme planning initiatives at county level – I’d be very interested in hearing from you regarding the developer’s perspectives re any obstacles, etc to developing childcare facilities, and the types of supports, information etc that would be helpful. Thanks, Quirkey, I have a copy of the Planning regulations, but I don’t have any details of architects who have an interest in the area, and who are willing to work with developers / groups to look at functionality as well as design.
There are capital grants and tax write-offs available for various categories of purpose-built creches, so demand for design is there, but in the absence of models of architectural good practice, the “two houses joined together” model of creche building will proliferate! Any leads, anyone?
