Can’t agree with that
would you apply that logic to all state funded projects or is there something specific to this one?Lotts
ParticipantI see that some of the (underused) tennis courts and some of the (neverused) Bowling green in City Council’s Bushy Park has been allocated for the skatepark development. An excellent first step.
Very good for terenure, but i’d love to see some proper city center locations being developed in this way. There was a consultation process (CC) not so long ago asking what types of obsacles etc people want to see. I didn’t see any published findings unfortunately but would be interested to see how street style fared vs a more traditional approach. Has anyone from this forum been actively involved??
1 million will not go very far on these types of projects. I can only hope Mr. Roche is having a laugh. I suspect he must be if he thinks 60k will provide even one playgound for a city council.

…..From a visual point of view does anyone have an opinion on how it will work with the statues and IFSC House?
Generally it is moored further east than the famine statues but looks great anyway. Down by Clarion. You really get a feel for just how tidal the liffey is if you pass this way throughout the day. It goes from only the rigging being visable right up to it appearing like the ship’s trying to climb out over the quay!
At night (with rigging lights on) it provides a wonderful focal point which is so badly needed for this section of the quays. But during daytime too – it’s great to see it bringing familys with kids into the area too, and makes you think what a missed oportunity the science museum in stack-A was.
I too saw a lot of the coverage of it’s reception in north america and was very impressed with the excitement around it’s arrivals. The queues were massive and the amount of tourist interest it generated must have been significant. The quality of the product is great (esp the structural woodwork).
I’d love the chance to sail in her (short of the 5k to crew it to US) so I think the dublin bay trip may be a good little earner, but hope it wouldn’t impact on it’s primary ambassador role.

ParticipantThe colour seems to follow the colour of similar dockland structures. Especially the nearby canal bridges which are currently being painted a lighter shade of gray (to better match?).

both of which are wonderful looking – in a totally industrial way.

ParticipantIt may well be still on site. It’s not possible to get close to that building anymore as it’s all been barricaded off.
I wonder can you insist on a right of way into the site considering it is/was a public road?Lotts

Also, the black barriers are only submerged at high tide. When I went to have look, they were jutting up high above the water. Very ugly and surely unneccessary
They seem to have done some work on these lately – I saw them sitting down low on the water at about half tide the other day.
I think it’s worth noting that the bridge and most of the area will be significantly enhanced with the removal of the DDDA offices (which should be soon).

ParticipantWonderful photo of the former Limerick Ryan Hotel (Ennis Road) in todays Irish Times – It was taken from a helicopter hired by local residents who wanted to see what was going on behind the HUGE green canvas fence that surrounds the site. The developers have been served with an enforcement order to reinstate a 7 story wing that they had been partially removed!
All this on a development that was opposed by EVERY councillor. The assumption appears to have been that once it’s covered up by a big tent you can do what you want![The Times article does not mention however that the 7 story wing was truely hideous]

ParticipantIt’s very impressive. Much cleaner and better defined lines than shown in the CAD image. A lot less fussy than I had pictured it anyway. But that might be a fault in my brain.
The view looks particularly well from close to head on ie from the side of the DDDA offices rather than seen side on from Matt Talbot. So this should impress the users of the bridge more than those driving around it.I’ll try and get some pictures the next time I’m there.
Looking at the bridge I thought it’s nice to see a great writer remembered in a way that dosn’t involve putting a statue of him on a bench.
Will there be a plaque, a stone – or maybe something special?Lotts

ParticipantThey don’t really know what podcast means – do they 😮
Even their website has the term in quote…It would be a good idea though and I do hope they get it together.

ParticipantYou could use an architect or some other suitable qualified person as a surveyor to check for major defects in an old property. They should also be able to give you a guideline as to how much it could cost to put right.

ParticipantThanks for the info Morlan.
Must say you did well to get an email out of the DDDA!

ParticipantSaw this in the Times on Saturday.

ParticipantAnyone know how much those windows have devalued the house?
I mean in real estate price terms rather than any personal perception. I know I’d now be unwilling to buy that house (if I had the money) and I guess many on this forum would also be effectively removed from the pool of potential buyers – but I’m also sure that we are not the market forces in this matter.
Does anyone work as a property surveyor and might know? I see so many advertised properties that have diametrically opposed features listed – “period features”, “double glazed”.
The most effective way of preserving these may be to build on peoples preference for “period charm” and with a little education the market could be steered away from this kind of practice. Surely the tendancy is towards people paying a premium for a non-vandalised house?

I’ve some photos of the removed cuppola that I’ll try and dig out. It certaintly was a great part of the buildings charm. Hope it comes back.

ParticipantAnd here it is today (well yesterday actually).
What a shame.
The Countess is no doubt the next to be demolished and then just think what a pitiful sight the seashell will make.I suppose this will be an ugly vacant site until that consolidation happens. The advertising hording looks like it’s there for the long haul.
