I’d love to see the gift shop moved out to an extension anyway. The dramatic entrace that was dominated by the giant elks, lost some of it’s awe when they were moved back and a gift shop inserted.
I love the museum – it’s like exploring in some half forgotten attic in your eccentric (but imaginary) uncles mansion.

As a big fan of Hundertwasser myself, I tried installing a planted roof during construction of a flat roof extension in a domestic setting but was advised that it would require planning permission. The problem is that a planted roof needs occasional access (gardening basically – though most people would be surprised how little is needed), this being the case you are then looking at planning as if for a balconey. You then also need to install railings. You might be able to argue the case for a harness system instead.

Maybe this is too strict an interpretation but I certaintly don’t want my neighbours to feel they can slap a few deckchairs out on their flat roof either!

    Thanks Graham!

Some excellent lights about alright. City Quay is still my personal favorite. Johnson’s Court looks wonderful – similar was done on curved street. Maybe still is. I must get into town!

The shop units make no reference to the height of the building. This seems to be the rule in commercial design. The other example that stands out in my mind is the false ceiling in mcBirneys (virgin Megastore) which was put in to make the building look just like any other supervalue.

That one of the interior makes it look like a airport terminal. What a shameful waste.

As 16 of the 21 cycle fatalities in the Dublin City Council area the past 7 years involved HGVs I’m hoping my own journey will be safer when the tunnel opens.

Couple of observations on Matt Talbot area too
Coming from Gardiner St direction, over the bridge (there is a cycle lane) and swinging left down the quays the cycle lane runs up onto the path behind a pedesrtian crossing. If you (pedestrian) want to press the button for the green man you have to stand on the cycle lane. Needlessly dangerous – particularly as bikes pick up a bit of speed coming down from the bridge. Also if the green man is signalled there’s a red for the cars – but there’s no red light for the bikes.

There’s a fixed kerb seperating the bikes from the cars around the custom house (as Graham mentioned) – but not enough space for one bike to overtake another safely. Also if there’s a pot hole or a chuck of rock or broken glass or a filled domestic refuse sack in there (I’ve seen all these) there’s no option to manouver around it.

A lot of the window frames are indeed rotting at the moment (or they were at the start of the summer when I was last there….)

And in a rerun of the BurgerKing etc. fiasco in Dublin Supermacs were finally forced to take down their sign, commenting on the state of the square. They of course had no planning permission for it.

It has been replaced by a similar illegal sign supporting the county team…

This is why these buildings need to be on the protected list. The decision should not have been your’s to make.

Fast grown pine is of course common today. However an important factor is that where pine is used, it is essential to specify the use of heartwood. This has different properties altogether. (If your joiner uses this term interchangably with hardwood look elsewhere).

There’s a digital image of just about everywhere on google earth. You can download the app from here. It is brilliant. You’ll waste hours zooming all around the place! 😀

They included some photos of sealed up entrances in the planning app. You are right – they do look sad.

I’m surprised that there seems to have been no objections filed. I know I was asleep on this one but NOBODY objected!??

Anyway I guess the good news is that the concrete paving is to be replaced with Irish granite. And in more enlightened times the railings can be removed comparatively easily.
