What can be done to transform a high-street for less than £500,000. A bit of joined up thinking on Leyton High Road in East London. Sadly something so cheap and simple is way beyond most Irish planners and Councils.

More tackiness for Westmoreland Street. I dispair!

Fexco Currency Exchange had put in for PP for new signage. Ignoring the fact they already illegally installed a protruding sign recently.

I hope someone has the energy to object?

Finally some good news for College Green. Abercrombie & Fitch to take old Habitat shop. The life this will inject into the area will be invaluable and may encourage the council to de-clutter the street and widen the footpath due to customer numbers.

The documents are up on the DCC website for the JWT premises are they are pretty shocking.

In effect half the corner is demolished half is “restored”. I cant see given how little of anything pre 1916 is left standing in this area how DCC can permit such a level of demolition.

I’m not overly disappointed by this project – it has its merits. The reunification of the two O’Connell St units and corresponding units on Henry St is a great move, and drastically improves their visual presence on such a wide street. It would be great to see the rendering removed as per the elevations submitted, but I doubt that will happen, we will just see a fresh coat of off-white. The shop fronts for these are too quite attractive.

My concerns are the treatment of the two Henry Street buildings. They are both not of particular interest and very awkward lot sizes so I can understand the developers position. But I do think they are work sacrificing if the corner building is done well. No word on the materials for the new build, but I think this could be done well. I remain optimistic.

Well designed new ‘event’ centre planned by O’Callaghan for Albert Quay/Victoria Road. Badly needed in this part of the city. I’ll put up a few renders tomorrow.

I believe the original plans were for a ‘token’ stand here, barely as big as the new north ‘stand’ in Lansdowne. Basically a sheet wall was to be put in place, and a few rows of seats, but the terrace was retained due to a certain amount of nostalgic pressure.

The Hill has it’s charm, but Croker isn’t the issue here really. The IRFU/FAI had a chance to develop an atmospheric bowl, but chose the cheaper option by not spinning the stadium and paying off the Rugby club (or offering Donnybrook). It’s still gonna be a good stadium, but it isn’t going to be great… But at least it’s consitent with Irish stadium building and destruction.. Just look at Dalymount, a badly chopped up relic of the past, Tolka, a hotch-potch of spur-of-the-moment building, Thomand, a badly designed, over-ambitous muddle of the old and new and Tallaght, a stadium built obviously to harness the full power of the unending wind from the Dublin/Wicklow mountains..

The Hill/Cusack stand had foundations built to take the load of further expansion. So it is possible, and was obviously planned for, but at this stage unlikely.

News renders submitted to ABP, show much diminished entrance from O’Connell Street, no Park in the Sky. Pretty bland to be honest compared to the original plan.

The revised Dublin Central proposals were recently submitted to the Board. Anyone see them yet?

Saw the whole lot at a presentation by Chartered Land a few weeks ago. Not too impressive, the entrance is around half the width and faced in redbrick. Bland. Chartered Land lads not too happy about it but said its the best they could get.

Il see if I can find a few images to post.

I see Arnotts have an application in for their shopfront (3269/09)

“PROTECTED STRUCTURE-The development will consist of the restoration of the ground floor shop front facade and entrance portico of the original Arnotts Building to its former style. The restoration work to the protected structure will consist of the following work. The removal of the existing canopy, flag poles, illuminated signage and existing glass shop windows on facade of department store fronting No. 11-15 Henry Street. The existing mezzanine floor plate will be cut back by 2 metres to re-create double height shop windows and to allow the re-establishment of original facade with reinstated pilasters. The installation of new entrance doors in lieu of existing shutters at main entrance flanked on both sides with new glazed entrance doors (1 set per side). The existing 8m high vertical illuminated external sign on Henry Street will be removed and replaced with a new 8m vertical illuminated external sign on brickwork panel at west end of no. 11-15 Henry Street facade; The proposed development to which this application relates is within a conservation area and the building is a Protected Structure.”

Good news. Would be interesting to see some drawings.

GrahamH and interested others,

Keep up the good work with reporting disgraceful flaws and poor workmanship on our cities historic streets. I have been passing this information on to the FG grouping on City Council and these issues are being followed up. The Cllrs I have spoken to agree with preserving the historic paving and are acting on your report.

Royal Arms is on Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital.

What is the story with the Arch? When was it removed and to where?

The Street sinage in Dublin City Center is probably worthy of its own discussion thread.
For my 2 cents I think we should have much more appealing sinage, similar to the signs in Chapelizod.
I cant find an example of this but there are many different styles in use around dublin

They are mostly pretty ugly…

Ok that one was a joke, but the next style used for the GPO would be look perfect at either end of the street:

I really cant see why we shouldnt copy the London signs, they are brilliant and clear and always visible, in most cases you find it difficult to identify what street you are on in Dublin. Dublin City COuncil should get on to Boris in London and get some of those street signs.

That aint the work of the council, its some militant looney pro-irish group they have been doing this for a while, same crowd behind trying to change car reg plates to irish. Tell the council and it will be removed!

The Irish should be scapped on them altogether, it looks so much more elegant in well made cast signs in english, just like the ones that were restored in Cork city recently.
