ParticipantIt is only the towers that are going. Most of the seven-storey blocks will be retained.

ParticipantThe beauty of a Metro system is that it could be extended when general economic conditions have improved.
My attitude would be to build it to O’C Street and then when we have money again, interlink Luas, Metro, and National Rail as a matter of priority.
With a Luas extension to the Point also planned, it would not be too much to ask a resident of the Docklands to get the Metro to O’Connell Street and then switch to the Luas for the final short leg of their journey.kefu
ParticipantI just cannot understand the problem here.
You would get the new Metro to O’Connell Street, hop on the Luas to Heuston or Connolly Station, then jump on the inter city train to whatever your destination is. I don’t understand what the big deal is – this is the same in most cities.
Say you arrive in Paris Airport and want to go to Versailles or something like that. You would have to get train into Gare Du Nord, get Metro to Montparnasse, and get another train to Versailles. Same in London. Same in New York, except there’s no train link even there. Same everywhere.
The Metro’s primary purpose would be to serve Dublin city centre. After all, we do have airports in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Kerry, Belfast, Sligo, Waterford and Donegal, which the State already subsidises. Why the massive concern with linking the Metro into the intercity rail network?

ParticipantCity Council told me last week they think that the Macken Street Bridge will be open in 2005. It will go out to contract at the end of the Summer. BTW, the Calatrava documentary wasn’t any great shakes – it was very pretentious and involved lots of Santiago’s guff about anthropomorphism or whatever he likes to call it.

ParticipantWhat height is the Wellington Monument?

ParticipantThis says it’s a bridge over the canal at the North Circular Road. The existing canal doesn’t cross NCR, however. Maybe, it’s the filled in bridge at Phibsboro that crosses the old spur, leading into Blessington Basin.

ParticipantThey are building skateparks at the moment, definitely one in Lucan and possibly one other.
There is no way skaters should be allowed to use street furniture. It’s noisy, chips away stone and scores metal and dangerous for pedestrians.kefu
ParticipantWhat an original idea:
“Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the Irish National War Memorial commemorates the estimated 49,000 Irishmen – all volunteers who died and the estimated 300,000 who fought in the British Army during the First World War of 1914-1918. Unlike his other war memorials, Lutyens designed a tranquil garden on the banks of the Liffey – a garden that was originally intended to be linked to the Phoenix Park on the other side by a bridge. This three arched bridge was to built on the central axis of the main lawn.”
Still, I’d love to see this built. It would bring that side of the Phoenix Park into even more use, which can only be a good thing.

ParticipantDemolish it. It’s a dump and so is most of Moore Street.

ParticipantThe plastic will be coming off the base today, I’m told.
They’ll be giving it a good old polish and then during the course of the week, cleaning the rest of it with a cherry picker.kefu
ParticipantThat’s the trick: They have to pretend it’s for people when it’s sole purpose is really advertising. They would never get planning permission for a billboard or hoarding on the side of the road otherwise. In many other countries, the shelters are actually shelters and face out the other direction so vehicles don’t splash you as they pass.

ParticipantStill has a practice out in Lucan or Leixlip as far as I know. Definitely alive.

ParticipantThe middle light is an intermediate aviation light and will be a permanent feature.
Thus, there will eventually be the red aviation light at the tip, ten metres of white light below and then half way down, another light.
At least, that’s what the project managers are now saying.kefu
ParticipantIt’s not even close to being close to a rail link. The nearest commuter station is Castleknock on the Connolly-Maynooth line. It is at least a one mile walk to the Aquatic Centre if not a good bit more. The thing is about as car-oriented as it gets.
PS where did you see the interiors of the Luas

ParticipantNo.
They’re looking at a finishing date of early April now.kefu
ParticipantNoticed that a while ago as well. It was an absolute disgrace that it was taken up in the first place, considering pictures of it were a staple of half the guide books ever written about Dublin and Ireland.
I wonder who did it, because it probably wasn’t the Stags Head themselves. They would have had no ownership over that patch.
I wonder was it taken because it got too slippy in the wet or something like that.kefu
ParticipantA needle has connotations of heroin abuse particularly in Dublin, which would be unwelcome and would only draw more stupid nicknames.
Ian Ritchie endorsed the name Spire, according to the report prepared by the City Manager.
The report refers to ‘Monument of Light’ as the designer’s “working” title.
There were five criteria for the choice.
a) clearly identifiable with the designed monument.
b) should reflect the spiritual aspect of the ‘working’ title.
c) should have unifying rather than divisive associations
d) should be short, understandable by visitors
e) should reflect national rather than local aspirations.
The report also explains why no historical tag has been attached.
“It is forward looking and aspirational, not retrospective and historic in intent.”
Interestingly, it suggests a separate monument be built to Brian Boru, to coincide with 1000th anniversary of Battle of Clontarf, 1014 AD.kefu
ParticipantI think I may be going mad. Why on earth would anybody build an underground link between Heuston and Connolly Station when we’ve spent the past three years building the Luas link between the two.
Surely, the obvious need is for a connection (underground, overground, who cares?)between Luas Line A and Luas Line B.
The preferred option would be tunnel from St Stephen’s Green to Broadstone with an interchange station (Luas to Subway) at somewhere like Church Street.
Then we have the option of building some rail link via Broadstone through Glasneving, past DCU, through Ballymun and on to airport.
There is no necessity at the moment and no justification for any other rail lines in the capital as far as i can see.
The only thing is improvement to existing suburban services.kefu
ParticipantNot too many months ago, Dublin City Council admitted that the Living Over the Shop scheme, although a great idea, had not worked out.
The take-up was far too low apparently and as far as I know, it’s being phased out. It was supposed to come to an end in December 2004 regardless.
The original idea was to create around 3,000 housing unit but I think it was used only for two properties at 3 and 4 Capel Street (both of which belonged to City Council anyway).- AuthorPosts
