I used to be in favour of the National Stadium being built at Abbotstown, which is part of Blanchardstown (not a thriving village, more of a mini-city) no matter what you think Stira.
    But not any more.
On an average November/December day, the tailback at the M50/Blanchardstown roundabout takes about fifteen-twenty minutes to pass through coming from the city centre.
Coming from the airport, it takes fifteen-twenty minutes to get up the M50 offramp that would take you to Abbotstown.
They are currently building/planning to build several thousand houses, Pelletstown and Phoenix Park, on each side of the N3 road leading in to this roundabout (which by any standards is already as bad as the Red Cow).
The rail link in this part of town, an Arrow system, is already standing room only.
Capacity on the line is due to be increased by 21 per cent early next year with no further planned capacity increase.

In short, would you build the National Stadium on a corner of the Red Cow Roundabout?
So why any one thinks it’s a good idea to do it in Blanchardstown is beyond me

Everybody makes out that the underground system in Paris involves stepping off one train, walking about five steps, and getting on another. Having lived in Paris, this is absolutely not the case.
The distance you have to travel (ie walk underground) in big stations like Chatelet-Les Halles, Montparnesse, Etoile is the equivalent of walking from Stephen’s Green to College Green. It includes staircases etc and with luggage etc can be an absolute nightmare. I won’t even mention the Tube, because it’s worse again.

I totally agree that the two Luas lines should be integrated. At the same time, I wonder how much of a difference it would make. The vast majority of public transport journeys begin in the suburbs and terminate in the city centre. And nobody has any problem walking from Stephen’s Green to O’C St or vice versa. How many people are there travelling from Dundrum to Bluebell or Tallaght to Sandyford? And even if you were, a car would always be faster than a two leg Luas journey. When the lines are complete, they will function perfectly and do their job very well.
I can’t understand your point Graham about how anything is being “wrecked”.
Even if the Luas lines were integrated, one will have to travel underneath the other (and a simple escalator would provide the connector). You can’t run rail tracks into each other.

There are tremendous new library buildings in Cabra (at intersection of Navan Road, New Cabra Road, Old Cabra Road) and in Blanchardstown (at the shopping centre). That’s just two examples and I’m sure there are many more.

Do you remember they put an entire village up for sale in Monaghan about two years ago? Could it be this one?

They are definitely giving the Garden a makeover. OPW already have plans, which include a new broad entrance facing out to the gallery.

Big wave heading for Dublin business park
    By FRANK MCNALLY

A giant wave is expected to cross the Irish Sea tonight, arriving in Dublin Port tomorrow morning. Locals are advised to remain calm, however. If all goes to plan, nobody will even get wet.

The wave is a 116-foot-long sculpture, made in England and bound for Parkwest, the huge Ballyfermot office development.

The 20-tonne steel and carbon-fibre structure will leave Dublin Port on Sunday or Monday and continue its journey by road in what a Parkwest spokesman said will be a “logistical nightmare”.

Designed by British sculptor Angela Conner, it will be the centrepiece of the business park, mounted vertically above the former Guinness reservoir. Once erect, according to its creator, it will be the tallest sculpture in Europe, if not beyond.

Ms Conner is aware that this claim may provoke arguments. Referring to the “mast” planned for Dublin’s O’Connell Street – known here officially as the “Monument of Light” and popularly as “The Spike” – she says: “That’s a lovely object, but it’s not a sculpture.”

Pat Doherty, whose Harcourt Development Group is behind Parkwest, had a more modest structure in mind when he visited Conner’s London studios. However, the sculptor persuaded him that big would be beautiful. Big will be expensive too: Parkwest puts the total cost of the project, including site work, at £750,000.

Occupying a 200-acre site inside the M50 and boasting its own railway station, Parkwest has been a big success since its formal opening two years ago. Its completed first phase of 3 million square feet has achieved 85 per cent occupancy, including such high-profile companies as Heinz and Allianz

That wasn’t feasible because the three burning castles is engraved on lamp-posts, bins and so on and couldn’t be removed, not least for historical reasons.
I think the “not-so-new” logo is snazzy enough. When the Corpo changed its name to City Council, they had to do something to update themselves.
I think it’s gone some way towards helping consign stereotypes of workers with arse cleavage and Ireland’s most lazy employees into the past.

The hole in the Millennium Bridge was done with a drill, as far as I know. Read fifth paragraph.

Vandalism of cow art on Dublin streets is ‘symptom of wider malaise’
    Nuala Haughey

The Dublin city manager has deplored the vandalism of fibreglass cows which led to their removal from the capital’s streets.

Mr John Fitzgerald said it was disappointing that the 10 cows, which are part of an international art exhibition, could not be left on the streets. Vandals destroyed several of the exhibits.

“It’s a symptom of a wider malaise that needs to be tackled by us as a society by asking ourselves what levels of tolerance do we want and then doing something about it,” he said.

Mr Fitzgerald said acts of vandalism, littering, public drinking and other forms of anti-social behaviour had worsened in the past five years.

In recent days, a vandal bored a small hole in the walkway of the Millennium Bridge, he said.

“The message has to go out that while this kind of behaviour might represent good fun for someone at 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning, it is a problem that costs money and ruins the environment,” he added.

You can not believe anything Paul Clerkin says. Next thing you know, the minispike will be on the front page of the Irish Independent.

I think it now fulfils one of its main criteria in that it’s clearly visible from miles around at night. That in itself is worthwhile. I don’t agree about the aviation light half way – i think it actually looks quite nice.

Going to be a hotel. There was some planning row over it but it’s now got the final go-ahead.
It was discussed at the June meeting of Dublin City Council and they said work should start before the end of the year.

There was a story in the Independent around a month and a half ago saying the O’Connell Street regeneration funding was in jeopardy. It wasn’t. At the last city council meeting, the city manager was at pains to say that the money for O’C Street has been ringfenced. He said that at times it was difficult to spend the money, because everything requires lengthy consultation and so on. The money is there – I don’t think there are any questions about that.

Nice pics of the James Joyce Bridge at http://www.dublincity.ie/news2.html – the city council’s website.
Unfortunately, they’ve put about eight huge pictures on the one page so unless you have a decent system, i wouldn’t bother trying it.

The real problem with the M50 is that it isn’t a real ring road. It only rings about half of the city (and I’m not talking about the unfinished segment). Too many Dublin residents have to cross it to go to work or town as a matter of course. The obvious solution is to start a new ring road another ten miles out, past Tallaght, past Blanchardstown, past Lucan and so on.

The interchanges are also a disaster. People talk about increasing the M50 to three lanes either side (which is feasible). But it would be pointless unless capacity at the interchanges is improved upon.
