ParticipantI can’t wait Siobhan. You know, most of the stuff on this forum is often so trivial…

ParticipantWhy not?
God, what depresses me about the web is that it’s been taken over by capitalists. It used to be fun – now it’s just a vehicle for eCommerce.
I think the most useful stuff on the web now is in the form of user forums and discussion boards.
But then – I’m a bit of an old fart.
I know you’re just posing the question though.

ParticipantActually I really mean that cgi/3d doesn’t capture reality more effectively at all but it does have an increased capability for ugliness [a common characteristic of many buildings]- there’s a tendency to try to capture as much detail as possible and simulate the materials in hideous surface rendering. I usually find 3d not to be an art in itself but merely a means of demonstration. It’s terific when used for Scientific means such as in TV programmes like horizon etc but it’s capacity for conveying beauty except when in the hands of a master are I reckon very limited.
But that’s just my opinion.
I can’t remember my point now…

ParticipantYes, I well believe it Jason. How many clients and town planners have the knack I wonder?
Do you think Computer 3d rendered images are less flattering in general? I imagine there’s more scope for capturing the buildings warts n’all there!

ParticipantIt’s quite natural looking in a strange crystalline way. Unfortunately it ‘s also heavy and bloated looking too. You’re right – Las Vegas. The other design is far more beautiful and will look really bizarre and kitsch in a couple of decades.
It’s funny though – models and conceptual artwork can be so misleading can’t they? Something about the lightness of a sketch or watercolour. The Woodquay buildings looked lovely in the original drawings too. Really transparent, light and airy looking. I suppose that’s the danger when it comes to the untrained eye – like my own. They create a gossamer illusion; unless you keep reminding yourself that it’s mostly concrete and stone.

ParticipantThat’d be nice Paul

ParticipantIt’s a bit like the White Horse on the Quays only 100 times better and more exiting. The only problem I have is that it looks a bit fragile. Perhaps some of it is put together with MDF and polyfilla. It’s an exciting place to be in though – most of it is great quality.

ParticipantThat’s a cute drawing. Who did that?

Has anybody been to Walter’s pub in DunLaoghaire yet? It’s a really exciting place to be in.

ParticipantIt’s funny – I’ve long been an admirer of hospitals from the 30’s/50’s. All those clean horizintal lines and lots of light. They’re often made of very nice narrow brick too.
I especially like the man-made coloured conglomerate floors which you often see in old schools and other state buildings. I like the way it’s sturdily molded and curves up onto the base of the walls. Presumably to eliminate corner-loving germs. Easy to clean too. I reckon my ideal home will have that material [what is it? How is it laid?] and also those small square ceramic tiles, liberty hall, Busarus, hospitals and strangely enough [don’t kill me… it’s the only feature I like] Hawkins House!

ParticipantHa ha.

ParticipantAghh… I think I’d prefer Palladio!
It’s just occured to me that the attic section looks like that Bloated Ulster Bank
Sloth. You know? The weak looking peaked aluminium section.

ParticipantDon’t you think it’s a stylistic disaster?
Did you ever see the proposed design for the Rialto Bridge in Venice – by Palladio I think?
Cannaletto did the conceptual painting.
It was horrendous. It was rejected thank God. This reminds me of it.John
john white
ParticipantYes, exactly – that’s what scares me.
John

ParticipantI can’t think of any Art facades flanking it.
This sounds a bit scary to me.

ParticipantYou’ve made some excellent points.
It IS amazing that the Spike is denied and yet, that Ulster Bank plastic lego heap is crapped onto the Quayside.
I still worry about the wisdom of the ‘educated’ sometimes though. I mean, look what Sam Stephenson did. Ughhhh..
Maybe though, someday in a 100 years they’ll thank him and twin Woodquay with St. Paul’s!
We need all sides of opinion. We all have to live here don’t we? It’s unfortunate that we won’t always get what we want.
A final point:
Do you think most of the huge buildings that we hate are permitted out of ignorance or are there some other underhanded shenanigans going on?john
john white
ParticipantOh CHRIST.
