ParticipantBlimey,
There’s a day out!

ParticipantIt was a water feature though and fitted the shape of the bank itself. I suppose any twit could have made it more interesting and lighter whilst holding to that consistent approach admittedly
john white
ParticipantWaterfall’s gone?
That’s a terrible pity. It was a very very refreshing sight on Dame Street during the summer. Especially when the street felt a bit grimy.

ParticipantI totally agree MG. The Railings are a cheap version of Georgian from what I saw from the road. Unsuitable.
john white
ParticipantI have to agree with all of your sentiments Rory.
I don’t live on the Northside – thank God so I’m not going to tell Northsiders [if there is any significant distinction] what’s good for them and what isn’t. But, O’Connell Street belongs to all of us and I don’t think it should be congested, dirty, dangerous, depressing, a mish-mash of pleasant/good[?] and ugly[?]/crap[?] building styles.
I’d like to be proud of it.
If we do become like most other rich nations and put Harrods and Tiffanys equivalents all over it that would be disgusting. On the other hand I reckon that Anne Summers is unbelievably inappropriate especially opposite the GPO.
[What you say about nutrition is an important point however seemingly irrelevant here.]

ParticipantSo do you think there are ways of making the Street less depressing and dirty without giving the poverty stricken a kick in the teeth?
It’d be nice if they could get first shot at all the potential employment there but of course that’s fantasy land. If that did happen – it WOULD be okay to have loads of posh and trendy businesses there wouldn’t it? Or would one still just be trying to insensitively ‘improve’ the Northside by ‘Southsidizing’ it?
Loike, y’knew mon.
Maybe it’s just us poncey stuck-up Southsiders who think the Street’s a mess.

ParticipantThe Wharehouses ARE listed? Thank God, I thought they’d be expendable in the face of this Celtic Tiger tripe. Let’s hope the Victorian Chimneys are safe too.
Easy to ‘accidentally’ destabilize though…

ParticipantIs that all Paul?
What about the International Bar?John

ParticipantHmmm… the last company I was in – coming up to the ‘Irish Business of the year award’ we were urged to phone in nominating our company. Can’t remember if I did or not.
We didn’t win though.

ParticipantRE: Scott’s Geragh
I’ve admired that building for years and years and wished I owned it. What a location!
But to be honest – I don’t think it a particularly brilliant piece of architecture really. Scott designed it in a morning or whatever. As Michelangelo remarked on Vasari’s 100 day frescos in the Vatican “Hmmm…Looks like it”.
Yes, I like Geragh too. I’d love to own it but it doesn’t measure up to the invention, beauty of form, ornament of his Busarus.

ParticipantI actually find the chystalline look of them unnerving. As if they’re in the unstoppable process of spreading, replicating themselves accross the landscape.

ParticipantOh Jesus Christ.
It does look apocalyptic doesn’t it?
Like monstrous black devils rising up from the depths of an economist filled Hell. It’s the f***ing end.

ParticipantThat’s a good point:
I remember living in Monkstown in Dublin years ago in an Apartment complex called Packenham.
Apart from the fact that it had hardly any windows [what’s the deal with that by the way? Don’t architects like big windows anymore or is the developer trying to save money?] it was the same as everybody else’s.
One of the weirdest things was when we got notice to quit we checked out other apartments there. They were nearly all the same. Aggghhh! It made me feel like I was living everybody else’s life too to an extent. It was as if many of the things I did each day were shaped in the same way as my neighbours.
The most completely bizarre thing though was that one of the apartments was at the other gable end of the block from us and was actually a complete mirror image of ours. In reverse. It was like stepping into an alternate universe! I couldn’t handle that at all!
Creepy

ParticipantWell it’s all just cheap and twee isn’t it?
John

ParticipantHmmm…
I wonder if they’ve ever even heard of Brunelleschi.
It’s sad to think of all the great intellectual struggles and triumphs over the last 1000 or so years – forgotten and replaced with pvc and morons.
Groan…

ParticipantHi TG
“Do people really like the design of apartments?”
Interesting question: I reckon the majority of people don’t really care to be brutally honest.
Most apartments built in Dublin are crap but most of us are desperate for a place, any place that’s affordable and hence often end up in a Red brick monolithic heap or a twee and cheap looking, plastic mock-georgian toy town.
We don’t necessarily stay in them for life either, moving on to something better/nicer/our own.
The ugly/cheap/laughable disease of apartment blocks will continue to blot our country I’m afraid as will dreadful and mis-placed housing estates in the countryside.
“Tudor Abbeyhall commons”
Etc…

ParticipantIs there a substance that repels vomit at speed?
John
john white
ParticipantOh God I have! Sorry, no reflection on your noble endeavour – keep up the good work.
It just looked awful.
Sad really.
Johnjohn white
ParticipantSo please assure me that it was no loss then?
The original design looks very nice. Was the actual building unimpressive? The exterior images I’ve seen were fairly hideous.
Perhaps it should have been re-built/amended to fit the original design years ago.
It would now probably be still be there.
