    Holy God, Paul, such language!!!

But yes the Greens are a bit OTT alright! It seems that no-one noticed the removal of the trees until it was mentioned on the Marion Finucane show. Over half have been removed since the works began. In any case, the trees destroy the views of many grand buildings on the street. If I had my way, they’d be gone from College Green also – The Parliament House is obscured by those bloody London Plane Trees!!!!

Honestly, commercialism is the bane of O’Connell Street.

To think one of the most ornate buildings on the street is to become a dire Paddy Powers is perhaps the last straw.

And while Dublin City Council may waffle on and on about having little arbitary power as to the use of buildings on O’Connell Street, they have no excuse when it comes to shopfronts. Since the regeneration programme has been launched, Ann Summers have erected their corporate logo as their shop signage. The same has applied to Abrakebabra, Funland….etc. etc. etc. These shopfronts need planning permission, and as such they were granted by the corpo!!!
If anyone has been to Regent Street in London you will realise that all shopfronts have the same name typeset – and no corporate logos – to ensure uniformity and style. If this was applied to O’Connell Street it would be devoid of neon, plastic, yellow and red signs with a luvvely corp. logo attachment.

It belies all logic that such rubbish continues to proliferate on O’Connell Street.

The Gresham Hotel has a whole series of tunnels, not only wine vaults, but tunnels which run under O’Connell Street to the Carlton Cinema area. This was the case during the War of Independence when Michael Collins used this network of tunnels to escape British forces durning one of their many attempts to capture him. The tunnels remain in place to this day, but many are blocked up. It will be interesting to see how the Carlton development will try to deal with this upon commencement of construction.

Here again our woefully incompetent transport dept. have announced another delay in construction of the Luas.

On a related matter, what are the stops/shelters going to look like? Was in Strasbourg recently and was very impressed with the design of their terminals/tram stops.

Give the theatre a chance – and the 11, 11A, 11B, 13, 13A, 19A pass by the theatre!! No 19 bus in this direction!

And, Paul, I would like to know why you wouldn’t go “out there”. Glasnevin is hardly a distant planet!
