I agree, docks looks completely flat… crying out for the u2 tower/”watchtower”
pics are excellent graham, as alwaysihateawakeParticipantArchitecturally ,i haven’t seen the times photos and i can’t find it in dublincity.ie. . It is vital that it actually looks nice .
😀 It looks very nice… (at least in model form)
I think this would add a touch of international class to dublin that I dont think it has quite yet.
Please excuse the quality, camera phoneihateawakeParticipantthanks again phil, the buildings surrounding the conference centre by day give a good impression of the scale of the previous plans
ihateawakeParticipantthanks phil, ill have a look, im surpirsed they are not available online:confused:
yes, those are the images im talking about… there are a number of differences, asides the obvious exclusion of the ncc, like the cylindrical tower and the stepped roof buildings in the central block. the bottom picture(excluding the ncc) was on TH’s website before being replaced by the picture on top, so i assume the top is the more recent rendering, and perhaps more accurate?
im doubting the quality of these buildings, how long will they hold up? will they look a wreck when they’re not shiny and new anymore? the office block near citibank looks awful now(citibank could use some paint aswell) and one last thing:D is mayor street intended to become a major population thoroughfare, retail, etc. or is it to remain in the clutches of the banking elite?
ihateawakeParticipantCould anyone tell me please where i can get some images , or post them if you like, of the kevin roche spencer dock plan?? I’d be really interested in seeing this predecessor to the idustrial crap that goin up now:(
edit: just though id ask which is the final spencer dock plan? the one on the website or the one on treasurys website? if someone could indulge the less informed:P
ihateawakeParticipantthis rekindles my hope for a functional dublin, its a beautiful proposal and would increase quaility of life to no end, the old part of the city would really be complimented by the new, pollution and congestion would go down, it would draw in more international business and spark new local enterprise… this city NEEDS this, as does the country.
how possible is this? what can be done to keep this on track and stop the proposal from flattened into sandyford industrial estate with a seaside view and congestion feeding underground parking, or am i getting my hopes up as this is all just an election ploy? ill have myself a revolution:mad:
ihateawakeParticipantNow there is a concept for a building (albeit very expensive). Cover the building is such screens (I am sure the technology will become cheaper and the screen material capable of covering larger expanses) and have real-time images of streets reflected through the screens. The skin of the building would become a panorma of world urbanism in real time. And who said that exciting things could not happen in Irish architecture – still hope for Dublin.
this was imagined/planned for dublin?? very surprising
has there ever been any applications for a big screen in dublin?
ihateawakeParticipantyes, they are far better than semi d’s but they are still ugly, wasteful, and completey devoid of imagination – yes, they will be regreted. stronger protests should be mounted, what is needed is an architectural “platform 11” style campaign… I WANT A HIGHRISE AND I WANT ONE NOW! 😀
ihateawakeParticipantI think one would look welll on stephens green, it would blend well with Irelands new cosmopolitan corner and with the new status of importance and modernism the area would gain with the completion of the hub of the capitals new transport system. It would also cover up that nasty corner building(bus stop newsagents)
ihateawakeParticipantI like the way it is lit now, but woud really like to see it flood lit.
Can i ask peoples opinions on television screens in the city center?
ihateawakeParticipantIts just another problem that has been obvious for ages, but no one cares to do anything about. Ireland is a joke at the moment and there is no one bold enough to bump heads and fIx it.
ihateawakeParticipantRTE reported on this and showed what i think is a really nice buidling, I had seen pictures of the spencer dock proposal before, but this seemed a little different. The report has the picture a little clearer
ihateawakeParticipant“Dublin will not become a high-rise city, even though higher building clusters or a limited number of landmark towers at strategic locations have become an accepted part of the planning process, according to the city manager.”
could anyone tell me where these “higher building clusters” and landmark towers would be placed?
on the topic of this thread, it seems obvious to me, evidently not to everyone here, that high rise does provide signifigent density. i recently returned from new york and was impressed by what i saw, yes becuase the buldings are “tall and shiny!” but also be becuase of the huge amount of space inside. these towers through the argument that ‘high rises need more land area and therefore negate the amount of space they save’ right out the window. the buildings i saw were wall to wall. i realise dublin has heritage to protect, and i love the current character of our city, but this does not mean that other parts of the city cant change. the orbital metro is a great oppertunity… clusters of high rise around the city would solve problems of congestion and sprwal, provide the modern city some are looking for and protect the historical center. i cant see problems with this, please point any out, it seem very practical, sensible, almost “german”
also, could someone tell me why the AT&T building in new york has no windows?
ihateawakeParticipanthas constuction started on tara street? i recall someone here saying it has, and it ihas “approved” status on skyscrapernews.com, is it the same proposal or have a few floors been chopped off for the sake of sunlight?
ihateawakeParticipantthese boards will answer all your transport questions…
ihateawakeParticipantare there images for the buidling supposed to replace hawkins house? has any step been taken in its planning? when will hawkins house be demolished?

You seem to have some inside insight which we could benefit from though (?).
im not sure what you mean or whether it was a joke  but ill take the risk and ask you…?
ihateawakeParticipant“Put it in tandem with restrictions on how far one can build out and then it is quite simple” – genious! has this not been considered by politicians? building dense/high seems to be part of the solution 😀
ihateawakeParticipantcould you tell me why building dense in the centre, or in the suburbs, wont stop sprawl?
ihateawakeParticipanti was wondering if bord planala has complete control on what goes up in our city or if the government has any part in it? and why are the approved buildings getting delayed? – like linda said… “Alto Vetro has delays. Montevetro has delays. Tara Street has delays. U2 Tower has delays. Merchants Gate has delays. Plus several other buildings have been approved yet we are still waiting for them to be built.” why not quit the trend and build em now?
