You both are making valid points.
Why argue? We Irish are extremely filthy……..almost barbarian. It stems from our history of deprivation and poverty and lack of urban and civic awareness. The council and corpo depts could be a lot more efficient too in cleaning and there should be an enforcement of the litter laws. We are just too lackadazical.

    Hi Martin,
I thought I made a perfectly valid point.
If you are aware of the planning system and have noted what’s been approved over the last number of years (well since the start of the boom) you may have noticed that safe little developments that are not too radical in appearance comprising of cosy red brick, eclectic in nature with references to the past and stunted in height get given the go ahead with no problem. This is somewhat dishonest in design terms, is’nt it. Looking at the the general public’s negative attitude towards recent proposed developments too one should ask is it justifiably well founded criticism on their behalf or sheer bloody ignorance.

To add, you don’t have to make absurd comments refering to certain psychotic or neurotic hang ups to further your point….. could that be described as immature student talk.

    Cheers.

I bet it’s blandness was why it was given the go ahead in the first place.Putting it bluntly, nothing too challenging for the poor auld planning approval dimwits or locals.

They should build it and remodel the loopline bridge as well. It’s the 21st century and the public should have a better understanding of the architecture of today.

Maybe then they should stay at the present site (but that is not to heed what B..B..Bertie said ……..man of cultural opinion …….me arse!)
Demolish that present pile and rebuild anew!

Or on the other hand if one considers that the present site is quite small and inadequate perhaps it would be a good idea to move to a new location as suggested.
A new high tech state of the art facility could be built overlooking the Liffey …..a landmark for Dublin city evoking the likes of the Sydney Opera House.
To construct or redesign a new theatre on the present site would be constricted by height and form limitations….. whereas a new spacious site down the docks would offer endless limitations. Think if the likes of the internationally renowned architect Frank Ghery (whom we discussed before)were to design the new theatre….what a plus for Dublin.
By the way the new proposed location is not that far from the city centre either, the city’s core is not that big and once we have a proper transport service.
Besides what has the present site to offer besides sentimental memories and an atrocious building designed by Scott which dates from 1966, (the original building was very small too ‘hence the fire’ ). The old ‘Abbey’ of Casey, Yeats and Co exists in name alone.
To add B..B.. Bertie Ahern ‘man of culture me arse’ should stop uttering his ‘pandering to the joe soap public’ vote catching remarks. As for Sile de Valera she seems more comfortable amongst the bogs.
The national theatre is for all the people of the nation.

Well if they do it why not build a landmark ‘state of the art’ high tech muti-purpose theatre and they could reconstruct the old original Abbey facade within a glass atrium. Sounds good?

Sorry Lynda, but I was’nt taking a swipe at you. The reason I mentioned the religious aspect is that there is a right wing Catholic/Christian group at the moment who wish to have a huge anachronistic representative statue of Christ erected instead. This would be ludicrous I think. Judging by the entries to the competion for the replacement of Nelson’s Pillar which ranged from a Celtic cross, a Tri Colour to M.O Nuallain’s 50’s B movie concept I think the best piece won in the end. I mean it has no political or religious baggage attached but just a sleek cyndrical spire, minimalist and pure for the secular age of technology and individualism we are living in today.
With the upgrading of O’Connell Street too ie the new paving, street furniture, GPO plaza, the Millenium Mall connecting to Moore Street, etc… I think the whole scheme will look wonderful….just imagine it. At least it deserves a chance…anything would be an improvement at the moment.

    Cheers Greg.

Please I don’t wish to sound bad but that sounds like the ‘Legion of Mary’ philosophy. I mean this ‘do good’……’the money would have been better spent’ blah, blah, blah stuff is timeworn in this country. Let’s get our capital city in order aswell and spend a few bob on it’s appearance……the city is for all the people and it will be of benefit in the future. There is a part of the Irish psyche which displays an oddity of ‘ah we don’t want that …sure we don’t need that…… and it’s to our detriment. Maybe it’s all those years of repression and deprivation that has detrimentally scarred us as a society.
There will always be charities for the unfortunate of society and as Mr. Christ said himself the poor and unfortunate will always be with us.

To add, if this building gets the go ahead maybe they’ll replace the Loopline bridge (despite it being a fine Victorian example)with a more modern one being lighter in appearance as what was proposed before. Santiago Calatrava could get the job and Irish Rail can finally say hello to the 21st century.

This looks quite stylish….John Portman- like…..no doubt it will meet opposition and will probably have to be reduced in height and coated in red brick instead!

I remember seeing somewhere before that Penney’s frontage is to have a revamp with Sam Stevenson as chief architect…..I am probably wrong as that was ages ago. However the Penney’s building is quite attractive with it’s copper turrets….pity about the street level frontage as already mentioned.

Although it was what could be described as ugly in appearance it could have had an auld lick of bright paint in it’s time to cheer it up. There are too many buildings of this kind with a dirty weathered concrete appearance which the public in turn understandably find unappealing.

….what an odd sight too it was to see here, a building of somewhat substance and height subcombing to the demolishionists explosives. Roll on Ballymun …although that will be somewhat sad too. ‘Failed optimism!’

The ‘Millenium Timepiece’ was’nt a bad concept, maybe if it was executed better….and the bigger the better for all to see.

………but please don’t jeopardize the full potential development of this site. This really sounds like panic stations. You may remember too that there was once a manufacturing chocolate factory here before the current warehouse/storehouse. An apparment scheme sounds fine. The city must develop….it would be awful if a mediocre pastiche ensemble were ereccted too.

Hurrah! for the Monument of Light…….but is’nt it dissappoining to see though that 3/4 of the general public disapproved of it Was it well founded constuctive criticism or sheer bloody ignorance on their behalf. An Taisce objected to it’s height saying that it could be seen from miles around ….but is’nt that the purpose of the thing. No thanks either to the artistic genius of M.O’Nuaillain whose futile objection merely held up the project. {His concept for the scheme remember, was a revolving observation dish on top of a column…..more suitable for 50’s SC-Fi B movies and ‘The Plan Nine from Outer Space’….that of course is my artistic intepretation of his proposed failed piece).

One must be prepared too for the risk of the completed ‘Monument of Light’ being subjected to vandalism by the uneducated and unenlightened. The movie ‘2001 A Space Odessey’ springs to mind….you know the scene of when the half man/half ape nervously touches the strange alien obelisk ………could easily be a common scene on O’Connell Street next year.(‘2001 a Space Oddity’ morelike.)

Ah well I say it will all look magnificent when finished ….the least we could do is give it a chance. If not, no doubt it will meet the same fate as the Liffey timepiece.

When the Millennium Spire is erected, (if ever), and O’Connell Street is revamped/refurbished, it will all look so wonderful….and everyone will be wondering then what was all the negative unfounded fuss now. Please give it a chance. Better than SFA, now is’nt it…..and at least they are doing something, not just griping and moaning while sitting on their hands.
