WHY IS HIGHRISE DEEMED SO BAD?…………..cause we are a nation of runts.

Ah come on ……Dublin is about to get something a bit different …well in comparison to the plethora of existing dross and we are to critisize it…..hurray for Gehry and Co for inspiring the ‘minnows’ and ‘also rans’. It is 2001 please remember and according to A.C.Clarke and Kubrick we should be living in big wheels in space by now…..We in Ireland have barely touched on the vein of the emblems of 20th century architecture. Poor auld K.Roche had a master plan for part of the docks too and his plain auld ‘Cubic’ piles got the push.

To add there is a good image of the proposed building for Hammond Lane in Frank McDonalds book …’The Construction of Dublin’

The Dublin docks may have been somewhat interesting…well in comparison to the rest of the city had all the original plans gone ahead…pre the curb on height etc…..

Thats somewhat of a coincidence …the photo of the hotel in Dubai is a bit similar to the proposed design by O’ Muire Smyth Architects for the former Hammond Lane works, Sir John Rogersons Quay

…I’ve been to Dubai lately…….impressive towers blocks to see ….all sort of shapes and forms against the skyline, oozing wealth and flamboyant style…….The one proposed for the Dublin Docks evokes somewhat the same. I wish we could have a lot more.

Just to add…….. being an artist myself Keating was a much over rated artist who’s paintings bordered on extreme Irish sentimentality (tourist rubbish) and he was an extremely dogmatic personality shunning the advances of Modern Art. Perfect for Scotts ‘pile’….Begorrah! Bejasus!

….but to think of it for a moment…does’nt that border on a bit of the old blarney…you know what ye’d get in tourist shops but this is in architectural terms….a building in the shape of a shamrock (I bet the interior had green somewhere) with a wee little garden in the shape of dear old Ireland …..visions of Dana singing ‘all kinds of everything’…… Flately doin’ the Riverdance, Maeve Binchy, the pictures of the Pope, JFK and the Sacred Heart over a log fire with a cauldron of stew,Guinneass,Christy ‘Diddle De Idle’ Moore, Aran Jumpers and Auld Dev,etc….. ….does it not sound all a bit kitch. Jeff Koons stuff.
    It’s our culture I suppose.

What has happened to the proposed Millenium Mall etc……’Pie in the sky’ as a lot of other things no doubt…..and we’ll have a poor materialization of the original concept….as a lot of other things.

If it was illegal to demolish………then how about rebuilding it as like with the Archers garage.

The cooling tower is a great symbol of our age (20th century)…….a functional object but yet quite an impression on the landscape, as like a Norman castle of old etc…..(‘paint it pink’ ….Jeremy Irons) It would be indeed sad to lose it……..but if it had a half life well……………..
we don’t want it falling on people heads…unless we get the engineers in….etc! and it will be there forever! What a great form on the landscape…..another symbol of human ingenuity and creativity!

    Cheers!

I suppose then it seems that the people who like to say ‘NO’ have got they’re act together regarding the rebuilding and rejuvenation of their city….while we with pots of money and mountains of self praise fumble about. Belfast the new capital of all Ireland!

Are’nt all the images supplied by DaraH of public spaces,(plaza, campus, piazza etc….) quite attractive. The use of public sculpture, street furniture, lighting, water features and the planting of vegetation to soften the hard landscaping all adds greatly as well as having some fine buildings as a backdrop. We here should take a leaf from the book of examples worldwide!
    Maybe that’s what Smithfield needs.
