With the horrific events of last week …There will probably be tighter security on all such buildings now.

Harry Crosbie seems a decent auld skin does’nt he…being a Dub and entrepreneur he has rejuvenated run down parts of the city …ie the Point, Vicar Street have all added life to the city….and fair play to ’em for that!

Anyone see Newsnight on BBC2 last night. It featured an article about the above mentioned architect Daniel Libeskind. Among his works featured were the somewhat crazy ‘Spiral’ – the extension to the V&A Museum in London. This plan seemed quite obtrusive and ill-fitting beside the existing older classical buildings, but the design itself is quite brilliant, very dynamic and visually exciting. Also his distinctly modern yet unusual Imperial War Museum in Manchester looked quite attractive gleaming in the sunshine. His Jewish Museum in Berlin, again distinctly Libeskind, conveyed a sense of eerie bleakness – the interior that is – evoking the death chambers of the holocaust – despite being empty, not having any exhibits at the moment…..his family too having suffered at the hands of the Nazis. The exterior of the building itself was clad in Zinc and represents a broken Star of David. He is a remarkable architect.
I’d say give him the job at Dun Laoire and let’s see what he does.

I bet they work part-time as bouncers too…….the uniform is gone to their heads.

That would be ideal if the ESB were to move out…I had heard that rumour before……there is plenty of vacant land in the docks ….and they could build whatever they like there too….a super hi-tech neon lit structure or whatever…..anything would be an improvement on the HQ which represents them now….another mistake by S.S.
In any way I think in this case it would be most appropriate to rebuild in a Georgian style….anything else would look too jarring in this area of the city. It has already been done in North Great Georges Street and Mountjoy Square recently to a reasonable standard. Also it would be a good exercise to re-build in such a way too….as was the case throughout Europe after the WW2 a certain ammount of historical squares, streets etc…..were reinstated. Perhaps houses could be again built …I’d say there would be a keen demand to posses such a home to live in.

What about the Department of the Taoiseach, Merrion Square and Liberty Hall…there’s a contrast.
When you try to compile a list however there are not many that are outstanding, are there? Hopefully the 21st century will have substantially more to offer.

This church has been idle far too long….after unsuitably being a painting & decorating store as well as a book shop I suppose a pub will get the custom.
Wolfe Tone I think was baptised there and Arthur Guinneass has some connection also.

Why get all uppity when one has’nt seen any plans…..the mere mention of a development by a big name and everyone seems to reach for their cudgels. Wait and see what is on offer …..instantaneously one will know whether what is planned is suitable.

What possible need could they have for them…..to build an extension or a conservatory out the back. Bloody idiots.

I think James you disagree because the status quo oppinion on the forum have disagreed with your views of late. Whatever one thinks of David Gray and his music but one should’nt be negative and disagreeable just for the sake of it. Think man rationally and fairly before you state your case. It’s all psychology….or are you showing your young age.

I agree ….It is bad that events have been curtailed somewhat in Smithfield especially when they are trying to rejuvenate the decrepit place. Maybe a plan could be mooted to move out those in the rather ill fitting and ugly Corpo houses and put something else on that corner of a more civic merit. A greater change for the betterment of the whole of the city.

I remember that building….presumbably the building is Georgian and the plasterwork was added in Victorian times. Then when it was recently ‘restored’ to it’s original condition they removed the plasterwork. I suppose by simply removing the plasterwork it cut down ‘conveniently’ on specialist restoration techniques…which is a shame.

Some fine carved heads as like on the Custom House to be seen on a certain building in Dame Street and Westmoreland/Fleet Street.
How ever it is true that Dublin greatly lacks such little details and nuances when compared to other cities.

Note too the Georgian plaster relief roundals on Eccles Street near Tony Quinn’s ‘health!’ shop. How they ever managed to survive as the this once fine street was savagely mauled!

    Context!…Urbanism!……Overdevelopment!….Overshadowing!…..Overlooking!…….Blocking of views!……
In the case of the Dublin docks……What views?…..the Dublin mountains!…What context!….a mass derelict area!….Overdevelopment! ….more like gross underdevelopment!….Overshadowing…..overshadowing of what!….it is a bloody city….buildings do cause shadows…..maybe go and live in the countryside…where you will have no problem with all of the above.

I do not understand this seemingly innate conservative constraint that exists in the Irish public today (including our Taoiseach…’Man of Culture’) with regards to modern architecture and indeed such views that are applied across the board to everything. More especially too if it is evident in our young architectural students who should be fired up with over active imaginations ready to create….instead of an urge for carpet slippers and the TV mag. Maybe it’s just a fashionable fad…..as set by Prince Charles and ‘The Divine Right of Kings’….(his housing estate is so lovely…Ugh!) If we could just loosen up a bit and shake off the shackles we would benefit ourselves a lot more…..as can be seen in the music and entertainment business…..there are a few good Irish architectural practices that are breaking the mould …..but we need to change public opinion too.
What’s more we desperately need to stem the continuing Dublin urban sprawl.
