ParticipantThe same can be said of the statues (ie Moses, etc) adorning the top of the building…….badly corroded almost so that I’d say they’d need to be replaced now. But sure is’nt it only a shell partially restored like the Customs House too…..it’s originality destroyed in our troublesome history. Maybe spend a few bob and give these buildings a proper overhauling and restore them in full…..well to a more reasonable standard……..It’s deserves more justice ….if ye pardon the pun.

Participant…….and don’t forget the planning objectionists who add to the delay too.

Participant………….and they have tape around the fountain cordoning it off.

ParticipantTrue NancyO..the favourable economic climate…the influx of foreign nationals…..the young educated nouveau riche….the influence of fashionable trends, the demand for quality, style and cleanliness have all added to the wave of the new super pubs.

ParticipantLooking at the aerial view …there is enough space to rebuild anew at a right angle to whats there now

ParticipantI suppose it could be termed ‘colloquial’….as in the contemporary saying ‘there is more strength in a fizzbag’…… common down my way.
Cheers!

ParticipantDid’nt O’Connell Street, the GPO et al look really well yesterday with the military funeral of the 10 Irish patriots. It brought an air of solemnity and respect to this important central point of the city. The military parades of London and Paris or indeed any other major city came to mind……maybe we should have a military parade every year. It imbues a sense of
pride….in the city and nation, I think. ( we had Easter parades before but they were stopped due to obvious reasons)…but I mean our military might is not strong at all (a fizzbag rating)….but the pagentry and colour of such a parade would add extra colour to Dublin city ….another event on the calendar ….as well as the Paddy’s Day parade…for the natives and tourists. Also does’nt it look much better that the trees were removed from the front of the GPO. This building can now be clearly displayed. The proposed plaza concept for it’s front is a marvellous idea.
The island on the middle of O’Connell Street was greatly overgrown with trees too…it is good to see that they are being thinned out and a more planned planting system is proposed. When the O’Connell Street upgrading is complete, Spire and all, it will truely look stylishly European.[This message has been edited by GregF (edited 15 October 2001).]

ParticipantMaybe it is a mistake…………if you look at the illustrated animation the bridge pivots on a central axis point as seen in one view ….in the other view however it is missing. This is illogical.

What happened to the proposed wonderful ‘Harp’ like structure.

ParticipantI think the best memorials are of the Victorian age or Nineteenth century when figurative sculpture was the fashion and memorials were erected to almost anything and anyone.Modern day memorials lack something. Compare the Memorial Gardens at Islandbridge dedicated to the victims of the Great War to the more contemporary Garden of Remberance at Parnell Square (Sculpture by Oisin Kelly) or the above mentioned Croppy Acre memorial which is a real hotch potch lacking symmetry etc… Memorials today tend to be more abstract and lack figurative sculpture with the exceptions of the evocative gaunt figurative sculpture dedicated to the famine victims at Dublin docks or Behan’s famine ship in the west. Figurative sculpture today in memorials is unfashionable I suppose ….(evoking Hollywood).
I think too that sculptors today tend to lack the great craftsmanship that was found in the Nineteenth Century….see the bad proportions of the figurines of Reinhardt who also is responsible for the Molly Malone statue. I think to rebuild the World Trade Centre (does’nt have to be an exact facimile) incorporating a wall with design motifs and all the names and photographs of those who lost their lives would be a good tribute. A park on this site would be a no no.[This message has been edited by GregF (edited 01 October 2001).]

ParticipantThat’s true MG…but I did’nt really mean direct natural sunlight…but rather ‘cheeriness’ as opposed to it’s rather ‘austere’ exterior

Participant……Does’nt it pick up on the nuances of the original main building……echoes of the rather ugly interpenetrated columns with block……is that the same type of stone used too in the cladding……however I’ll say the interior will be good.
By it’s outward appearance this would be an ideal gallery space dedidicated solely to the cubists.[This message has been edited by GregF (edited 25 September 2001).]

ParticipantThis looks overly obtrusive in the streetscape ……trying to emulate the Guggenheim?….will be on a par with the ESB offices on FitzWilliam Street in years to come on reflection.

ParticipantI thought this brutalist stuff was long gone out of fashion……Huge minimalist slabs of windowsless concrete. Wait till this gets weathered too it will look just crap.

ParticipantLooking at the photo I’m sorry to say but I think it looks horrible…..

ParticipantWhat an interesting sprawl…..no vertical thrusts however….complying to rigid guidelines I suppose.
If it’s composed of glass it will look good….concrete however would be yucky!
