ParticipantTo add …whilst travelling home last night on the public transport bus service I saw two little gurriers of teenagers years spitting and guffawing, throwing their filth around, scrawling their names on the seats and windows much to the dismay of the startled and inactive passangers. They then attempted to vandalise the bus further by trying to set it alight of which I then interjected and landed both of them a box or two for good measure. Both were then thrown off the bus by the driver. Some of us Irish lack civility….and some of us fail to see the lack of it.

Participant…I don’t need you WhiteCube to preach to me about my nationality….my love for my country Ireland is unmeasureable …like that of Padraig Pearse for the Virgin and most pure Mary, Posh for Becks, Tristan for Isolde, Gaybo for Kathleen, Bertie for Man Utd……..It is with so much love and from this love with true reflection that I can comment on the state of this nation state….and good on me ye say. Nothing is a sacred cow…..open your eyes and wake up to reality. When push comes to shove I will be there with green scarf around neck to cheer on the boys in green…..or rifle in arms to defend from oppressors or sweeping brush in hand to protect this little sacred and green isle from litter louts. Where will you be ….but probably hiding under your bed……po on head.

ParticipantFrank McDonald has a good write up today in the Irish Times about the potential of having the Abbey moved to the former Carlton Cinema site on O’Connell Street. With the ammount of land available here, Art Deco facade and all, it sounds ideal for a spacious ample theatre.
Too bad it’s not the case …..more then a case of a missed opportunity.[This message has been edited by GregF (edited 21 February 2002).]

ParticipantOh dear ….we will have another small mediocre theatre to look forward too…they’ll no doubt build upward however…cramming it into the small site.

ParticipantAlthough I liked the work of Scott Talon Walker…however their work now however has attained a sense of utter banality and sameness….Richard Mier gone wrong…. and they are proliferating everywhere!
Don’t forget the architectual crime which is being perpetrated by them in the docklands of Dublin……a total sleep zone of architectural banality Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz…and a great featureless mess to rectify in future years…..What a waste of money today.

ParticipantThe same size! ….well then it will not succeed…unless it will be like the Tardis.
The idea of acquiring surrounding sites for space should be considered too….a Liffey frontage sounds appealing.February 20, 2002 at 9:27 am in reply to: The Abbey Theatre – should it stay or should it go #717719GregF
ParticipantLet’s hope then that they’ll do a good job designing this one…… so as it will not have to be replaced in another 36 years time….as like the present disaster. €100 million is a generous amount to build something decent. And let’s hope it is of a generous scale…less of that small pokey architecture, with low ceilings, endless walls and corridors and no light…..trademarks of Irish 20th century architecture.

ParticipantIt’s quite a distinctive feature on the landscape and looks good…..it is being covered in shiney glass.

ParticipantThere gonna build new and much needed platforms at Hueston Station, making it bigger and better….hurray!

ParticipantTrue…. oh true…… architecture does not appeal to only sense……it appeals to all the senses;…. sight, smell, sound, touch, taste…… smell, sound, touch and taste relating to people, food, atmosphere…..As we all know a city could look wonderful but it could be as dead as a doornail and lack atmosphere. But the look of a place, the very initial impression as I have stated is the most impressionable to a person…..and Dublin is featureless in architectural terms….much in comparison to a provincial British city. Let’s get our capital city, Dublin looking good, distinctive and impressionable,…..we already have the other traits …..the smells of food, vomit and piss…..a good mixture of people….and thank god too…. of all backgrounds and diversities, from the local riff-raff to beleagured and much contented foreign nationals who have made Dublin their home. Intellectualizing can be alien to common folk……..
Modernism was a natural progression of architecture …don’t knock it…..it stripped away the frivolities and decoration getting down to the pure structure and design as like the art and classical music of the times.
A couple of centuries before that the Reformation had somewhat done the same and produced the minimalism of it’s day in the guise of Palladian, etc…….but look what the the Counter-Reformation produced….the Baroque….over the top dramatic theatre….but visually brilliant if not to everybody’s taste.GregF
ParticipantI think it’s more aptly called waisting the tax payers money.

ParticipantThere is a forum topic in the archives all about this with objectors getting really hot under the collar……I gave my oppinions

Participant……anyone been to BALLYFERMOT…it’s a great place….Joe Duffy, Lorraine Keane’s Ma and the Furey Brothers all come from there….what a great cultural contribution to contemporary Ireland …and we just had a new Civic Centre built….Temple Bar comes to Ballyfermot!

ParticipantPlease leave the chap alone……

ParticipantHi Shadow…..But architecture is such a visual thing…it’s all got to do with the visual senses….the initial and most important impression is made to the optic nerves.
However all please don’t put an emphasis on the view of the Custom House ….it is as I always say a shadow of it’s former glorious self….almost all of it destroyed in our troublesome past and only crudely and partiallly restored.
GregF
ParticipantLooks like the aliens from the movie War of the Worlds…..they look good however…..is the architecture around here up to scratch to match.
GregF
ParticipantWhy not remodel the bridge…it could be a lovely feature for the city especially when it could all lit up at night.
GregF
ParticipantThank god it got the go ahead….it will look great…..but now the objections will no doubt start……ranging from shadows being cast to possible terrorist attacks!
