ParticipantAnyone who loves the newly designed signs would they like to expain their meaning…..Ok ‘An Lar’ is city centre……but what about the rest………
PS…. I am a slow learner and slow driver.GregF
ParticipantHow about that beautiful hotel they built in Ballsbridge, the Four Season’s, or all those beautiful appartments they built along Dublin city quays………not forgetting the new office blocks down the dock’s too……
PS……’I AM MAD’ as in (aka) ‘Bonkers’.GregF
ParticipantAll this talk of money, capitalism, corporations, etc……….but money IS the driving force of successful societies and indeed civilization itself ………since the dawn of time …….and it is how we have so many wonderful structures today from times past and the present around the world. We are only new to a proliferation of Money here in Ireland thanks to our boom ….which has since disappeared….well according to some sorts…..but we are much more affluent however overall as compared to before.
Ok we get a cheap copy of corporate America down the docks (aka Georges Quay) but it is better than what was there …..and here’s to Kevin Roche’s Spencer Dock’s original plan, which would have acted as a great anchor for a wealth of money for the IFC, Dublin City and the rest of the country…..Alas not the case…. I remember the detractors were out in force…..and when you think now, it had better potential than what is happening down the docks at the moment……which is one big Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz in regards to spectacular architecture……… I knew this would happen……..and we are a lot poorer architecturally, and materially.

ParticipantYour very good FJP to get into these places so as to take these snaps……It’s not as if the CIA is around etc….but buildings in Dublin should be made available more to the public…..especially those of a significant, considerable, height or function….well then again………there is a lack of them is’nt there……..and the DDDA has seen an end to that ………no more buildings of a considerable height in our capital city………….no such thing as a restaurent with splendid views of the cityscape etc…..and when you look at the joy and entertainment it has brought to people.

ParticipantGreat shot FJP…….they are not really that bad
…..I think they are better than the SOM proposal and fit better in the space.August 16, 2002 at 10:42 am in reply to: EASA-european architectural summer school in Croatia #720633GregF
ParticipantSpeaking of Eastern Europe…….but is’nt it full of architectural gems …despite the ravishes of both World Wars and the subsequent communist regimes. Was’nt it sad to see the beautiful city of Prague flooded on TV, the beautiful Cathedrals, public buildings, squares and appartments under a biblical deluge. ….(not forgetting but Budapest is a gem too……The Austro-Hungarian Empire to thank in a way I suppose),and to add ….see Munich recently there under a deluge while it hosted the European athletics but yet it still looked very pretty too…….unlike dreary auld Dublin on a wet day……maybe cause many of their buildings as well as being architecturally pretty are painted in bright summer colours……ie yellow ochre , terracotta, egg shell blue…..etc……
We recently painted our auld pebble dashed suburban gaff there a yellow ochre colour ….it looked so great that even the neighbours followed suit….and it has brightened up the whole neighbourhood…..well when you consider some of them had their homes painted black….anything would be an improvement.GregF
ParticipantAnyone see the social housing they have built in this locality…..Blackhall Place/Queen Street.
I think they are demolishing the old flats and are building these Lego style contemporary townhouses instead.
Pinkish terracotta in colour they look kinda good….well providing that the whole area is upgraded too in a similar style to set them off.
It would be good if someone could get a photo of themGregF
Participant……..it’s still the same……. nothing happening
GregF
ParticipantIndeed ………but for a moment I thought it was that glass fronted building …….opposite the the National Concert Hall…… beside the Conrad Hotel , that we talking about. …………
and when first seeeing it ….does’nt it look well………….pity this glasss walled style does’nt proliferate down the Dublin docks ……(and sorry for always harking on about it too).GregF
ParticipantAye …I agree……I remember reading about this car park getting a makeover years ago……maybe cause of limited funds ..but it has taken ages to happen. This car park really fits ugly up against the Winston stores…what a disasterous design…and how the Corpo could ever let it happpen is beyond me…..Let’s hope they have come a long way since those massive mistakes…….and let’s herald hopefully an era of correct understandable urban design in our Capital City of Dublin and which will set the standard for the rest of the country. Here’s to ‘Urban Living’

ParticipantPoor auld Liberty Hall needs a make over……..it is a landmark for Dublin afterall. This area could look really well and ‘modern’……with the inclusion of the new Tara Street train station proposal…..a revamp for Liberty Hall and a contemporary re-modelling (Calatravesque) of the Loopline Bridge……….it would all look just wonderful!

ParticipantBelfast City Of Culture ……will it get it I wonder……………..I hope so.

ParticipantI saw this on Friday and they done a good job restoring the main building after it was burned down after they had only restored it…..the hand sculpture looks good too……..what does it symbolize I wonder,…..a helping hand?
GregF
ParticipantI remember Parnell Street west was little more that one huge surface level car park a few years ago after the Corpo demolished the whole street for road widening…hence the dual carriageway that exists there now which was to run straight through to meet North King Street. It is rather odd to see a building that was supposed to rejuvenate the street now faces the same fate……….but at least it won’t be left with a gaping hole as like last time. Shooters bar or what ever it’s called is to get the chop too………but overall I suppose it is good to see this street somewhat rejuvenated………especially with the development across the road at Pennies near completion…..and all the buildings are of a substantial height.
Gives the street named after one of Irelands greatest patriots a bit of dignity which it seriously lacked.GregF
ParticipantAlthough depite not being ground breaking in it’s design…….I think however this complex fits in quite well on Georges Quay…..The new Tara street train station proposal which is very striking will add to a lot to the appearance of this area………and lets hope they’ll change that loopline bridge too.
GregF
ParticipantAh…… post them on the site as well ………give us a look too!
GregF
Participant……ever see the ordinary electrical cables trailing, linking or hanging from the front of buildings………………very messy indeed
GregF
ParticipantCroker is one of the newest finest developments in Dublin/Ireland and a much needed one too
GregF
ParticipantAye…… .the proposals for Drogheda are’nt that bad……and although Temple Bar falls short of the Utopian urban dream, (due to uncontrollable factors as well)….it’s initial intentions meant well ….to enhance the fabric of the city of Dublin……and the proposals for Drogheda town can only do more of the same.

ParticipantHow about impaling O Nuallain and other knockers and detractors on the Spike as a tribute that great Dub Bram Stoker author of Dracula (aka Vlad the Impaler).
