The inside of a building is as important as the outside…..else we’ll just have superficial wallpaper. In secondary buildings and less important buildings I suppose it’s ok but in premiere buildings ….the jewels that we fanfare and hark on about as being genuine intact artifacts of our past well then that’s a lie.
The Reichstag in Germany got a new lease of life with Fosters makeover, the Germans reflect on it’s once magnificent Baroque interior and historical past I’m sure, but I’m sure too that they treat it now as a modern addition to Berlin life in the context of today and not treating it as an intact antique manifestation.

The 3 most prominent buildings in Dublin alas were all gutted and destoyed in our troublesome past. They being the Custom House, the GPO, and the Four Courts. What one sees today is only a copy of what was once there before. There is an over emphasis on these buildings too today, considering that they are only a shell to a degree…..stunting the development of the Dublin of the future (re the Spire debacle, the loopline bridge view debacle etc……..)
These buildings should be fully restored however….instead of living an anachronistic lie.

The Clock on OConnell Bridge House is working again….since last evening when I noticed it.

Probably underneath that fancy facade there is a concrete base wall of a substantial thickness. It would be an ordeal maybe to start slicing windows in it……and would eat into their alloted makeover budget. Probably the architects had to work with what resources there were too.
Hence a wallpaper solution has been applied.
Anyone know the name of the architects.

The lights on the new Millennium Bridge are lighting again. However with the makeover just recently done on O Connell Bridge House I see that the clock has stopped and nobody has fixed it or adjusted the time……. and for such a central focal point too in the city…what a shame.
Imagine being in London and seeing Big Ben stalled for weeks neglected and forgotton. Would say a lot about it’s people if it were the case.

Let’s hope that ILAC redevelopment plan goes ahead and the street line is re-instated. What an awful concoction the ILAC centre was……bleeding ugly too……….Let’s hope it will pave the way for the upgrade of Moore Street. A bit of refinement in this day and age would’nt go a miss with the hawkers too.
Anyone ever miss that colourful mosaic tiled paving mural that was at the entrance of Moore Street from Henry Street. It was inserted in the late 80’s, the time of the pedestrianization of the street but removed with the recent new revamp paving. A little feature that added to the street. Anyone remember that ………eh what?
I think it should be re-instated too.
How about it Jim Barret and John Fitzgerald.

As well as the lights gone on the Millennium Bridge I want to add too the central statue figure on top of the GPO which is unlit too ……and add too the lighting of Liberty Hall as someone noted before.
Jasus Christ……these are basic bleeding things

That GPO design with the cupola however would have looked more imposing on the street. Pity it was’nt built.

There were grandiose plans too for the Custom House and it’s environs …..I remember seeing a sketch of it. Alas it all was’nt built.

Did’nt manage to fit them in …..but went for the tour of Celtic Park the following day. Made me weep for the forsaken Stadium Ireland project and Eircom Park. To think the begrudgers were saying that Dublin did’nt
need so many stadia when you consider that Glasgow has Hampden Park, Celtic Park and Ibrox and Murryfield too in Edinburgh and all are put to full use. They made a mockery of Landsdowne Road to me while over there too ….saying jovially what do you C**ts do with all your money from the EU.
When you consider the ammount of tax we pay too ….there is an element of truth.

Very true ……and dual carriageways were ignorantly the order of the day for the city centre one time destroying many streets with their medieval formats so as to pave the way for the car. Parnell Street is only recovering now with the street being somewhat reinstated and repaired.
    What were they thinking then?

I’m just back from Glasgow for the Ireland/Scotland friendly…..and what a quaint old city that houses some remarkable old buildings, edifices, features etc… and some awful bloody over sized 60’s monstrisity towers that virtually ruin old established uniformed streetscapes. There are a plethora of Hawkin Houses and ugly concrete concoctions. It has it’s fair share of derliction too….fine old Victorian buildings left to rot….and plenty of those horrible 60’s onwards bunker style car parks.
Wood Quay was a grave mistake but thank god we did’nt get as many as Glasgow.
You can see where they are trying to repair the city now somewhat with the newer developments which use a variety of more materials rather than just plain old weather beaten concrete.

Great photos Gabriel Conway….great to see it all coming along.
Funnily, looking at the photo’s the Luas works, train tracks and all remind me of me Lima train sets I had when a kid in the 70’s…… (aka pre-playstation for the younger viewers).

Aye Pete, a firewoks display too around here as well as the one down the docks on St Paddys Day would be ideal, and especially launched from the top of the GPO too. Could be visually spectacular.
Would give ’em some practice too to get the ‘New Year’ celebrations for the city in order.

They could coincide it with the Paddy’s Day festival…..make a big thing out of it for Jasus sake. Get the army band out of the barracks too to play a few tunes and camailes.

Na …I think it is a good anchor point here, the bridge here is quite broad to sustain a high anchor point.
I’m just sorry that the make over it recently got was’nt more stylish. It has a cluttered roof. I think it could be a lot better.
The Ballast Office across the way is ridiculous…It was demolished and rebuilt in the 1980’s …only to house today the tacky frontage Carroll’s etc…It is an anachronism.
The 3 buildings here at O’Connell Bridge; they being O Connell Bridge House, the cutie Victorian like pile in the middle that housed the Man U superstore and the afore mentioned Ballast Office would be better if they were replaced by 3 contemporary stylish sister buildings. (The one in the middle could be removed and built elsewhere if it has any architectural merit) This area is a focal point for the city too …..it could become a comtemporary version of College Green.

So the Abbey Theatre is to be rebuilt. E100 million is to be spend on it’s reconstruction which will be up to 11 storeys high. (I can see the objections already, the Green Party are no doubt preparing a dossier.)
Let’s hope they get a big international name in to do the job; Norman Foster, Frank Ghery, Daniel Leibeskind or whoever….but I hope they just don’t settle for Scott Tallon Walker & Co.
Was’nt that 60’s featureless pile really atrocious by Scott and his associates…..the portico that was added in the 80’s however gave it some redemption, but I’m glad to see it go. Hopefully the new design will address the street better and will lead to the rejuvenation of this part of the city which is filled with nothing but tawdry looking establishments and winos. A few good auld pubs in the area however.

Yep …the area is being cleared for the paving to begin…..I saw some slabs there ready to be laid.
