Participant……the gas thing about all these problems that have been mentioned that exist regarding Dublin City et all…… is that they are all rectifiable.
If people just used their common sense at the end of the day.
The way to a cleaner, better, efficient and attractive city starts with oneself really and one’s environment; in your home and immediate surroundings.
(that begging bowl culture is a millstone for us Irish too).GregF
ParticipantI agree with Naz in that we need taller buildings in Dublin . I have always advocated this point. It would help curb the urban sprawl and would make the city more compact and substantial.
I think however that tall buildings should be stratigically placed in the city so as to create focal points and vistas and not just plonked here and there. Putting high rise in an older established and uniformed street of 4 storeys would be ridiculous. (Visit Glasgow as an example)
Dublin docklands is an ideal location to create eyecatching radical high rise buildings and structures ….sadly it is not the case…..due to the conservative constraints set by the DDDA, vote catching TD’s and some visually illiterate members of the general public. Instead humdrum stumpy 4 storey run of the mill office developments are springing up in this prime location.
If Dublin is to compete with cities abroad as a tourist destination and a place of good living for the natives alike, it will have to adhere to high standards of architecture and civilty so as to achieve such status.
Getting the likes of big names in architecture such as internationally renowned designer Calatrava to create bridges, buildings, features etc….will add to the attraction of the city.
Blanned boring architecture, dereliction, filth, crime, etc….will forever deter the progress of Dublin city.GregF
Participantgrrrrrrrrrrrrrr………..

ParticipantJesus your’re right …..maybe they should have designed it like the boring and miserly Frank Sherwin bridge up the river.
GregF
ParticipantNa….. if there was a major fault with the bridge I’d criticize it…….but there is not.
It is a social problem instead.
Personal prejudices should not get in the way of forming opinions either.
The arch like structures have continously been used in most of Calatrava’s bridges around the world….yet one never hears of complaints of people using them as slides. Maybe because there is an element of urban respect that exists in those societies….which we lack somewhat here in Ireland.
We Irish are somewhat new to urban living I suppose when compared to other societies….. and social deprivation too is a factor for this disrespectfullness…….but irresponsible actions by people should not be defended so vehemently on such grounds.GregF
ParticipantHere’s psychology at work here now …..you don’t like the bridge hence you’re argument of ‘it’s not the childrens fault but the designer’ .
GregF
ParticipantZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

ParticipantI remember seeing ‘poor’ Daithi out protesting at the visit of Prince Charles a few years ago when he fulfilled the Irish stereotype by throwing eggs and potatoes at him.
And he ‘s against high rise?…….would he even know his elbow from his arse.
GregF
Participant…..or is that bridges are for children, traffic are for orchards and playgrounds are for adults.
GregF
ParticipantI don’t think we really need a psychology lesson, do we……but bridges are for traffic, playgrounds are for children and orchards are for robbing.
GregF
Participant………hope you practice what you preach too.
GregF
ParticipantNa…….no way snobbish bud……I am of such stock which fully qualifies me to give out about such. No pretensions here.
GregF
ParticipantWe want people to interact…….by scaling
the bridge (ah yea …like the way they scale the Eiffel Tower).
…..hence you end up with graffitti ridden, litter strewn, vandalized, treeless, no go areas of a city….as Dublin has suffered.
….the amount of vitriol aimed at kids…..Kids? more like little monsters. The makings of tomorrows gurriers.
Responsible parenting is the keyword here……and it should bear no relation to poverty. Poverty of the mind morelike.….where’s the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!
GregF
ParticipantWhat are these people…monkeys or something….Jesus, it’s a bridge for god sake ….How many times has one seen a playground installed for ‘bored kids’ and it ends up vandalized.
GregF
Participantas in aka…. the kid was performing for the camera
GregF
ParticipantI bet they’ll erect big cumbersome ‘Irish fencing’ barricades with barb wire that will ruin the look of the bridge. Me I’d leave anyone whether it be street urchin or drunk who attempts to use it as a slide; they should be left and let fall into their rancid Liffey watery grave as an example to all who attempts the same. Jesus, what is lacking with some people today is ‘responsibility’…..to be responsible for ones own actions….to be responsible for your childrens actions. Everyone is only too willing to blame someone else…. aka compo culture.

ParticipantI agree about Marlborough Street …..all the attractions yet it is one big piss pool.
It’s always full of beggars, down and outs and alco’s…..roaring and shouting at each other. I frequent the pubs and off licences here and see them all in all their drunken unrestrained glory. Very intimidating to tourists and natives alike. Not good for just a few feet away from our premiere street….and never a garda in sight either.GregF
ParticipantAs SW101 says …..I think he is thinking of himself as a modern day Leonardo…I thought that too…….but the work and the structures that he has produced are quite characteristically Calatravesque and unique. See that roof …what a feat of engineering…..will we ever see the like here in Ireland….I doubt it.
His creative processes are initially childish I thought….like the sketch outlines of the hand …the eye drawings, etc….. but the final works are that of a master. Whatever it takes I suppose; playful exercises for the mind to get the creative juices flowing.
His scuptural works were quite brilliant too. Thanks Ivar for the nice comments ….many people in Dublin, Ireland would like to see many more great eyecatching building projects.
GregF
ParticipantYep that’s true ….but we have a long long way to go before our collection is of any significance
