Aye indeed, that would look absolutely wonderful down the Dublin docks amongst all the STW stuff …instead! And lit, up like Las Vegas at night …….wonderful!

A glass neon tower of 40 storeys or more with a pylon or windmill on the roof would be very apt here. Blacam Meagher & Co are no doubt drawing up the plans.

I’ve Googled a few images of convention centres from around the world and as convention centres go, I suppose the new one in Dublin doesn’t look too bad, in all honesty, especially when you consider how ultra conservative we are in Ireland.

I suppose it’s a wonder they haven’t abandoned it given the present credit crunch and state of financial affairs.

Me, I’ve always had a penchant for Baroue sculpture, ye know the type of stuff….busts and bosoms, flesh, flowing robes, fruits and flowers, equestrian, etc…of the likes of the master sculptor Bernini etc…
Victorians were experts too at public sculptures, even if the subject matter was very vacuous ie royalty etc…and the finished piece very OTT.

I don’t think sculpture will reach such heights again as the Baroque. Hence today we get such muted little bronze pieces in comparison.

Anyone see the recent bombastic piece unveiled to the Queen of England’s mother in London. To look at the piece ye’d think that the old dear was a great leader of the masses when she lived. What a lie!

However, I’d be all on for more public sculpture pieces in Dublin please. It’s a part of what makes a city great.

The DDDA website says that it’s currently under construction……

I’ve seen the pier in the river. It looks as if it might be the pivot on which the bridge will rotate to open and close.

It’s dominating when ye stand in front of it. They’ll have to get rid of that street lamp.

A building designed as a post office is a lot more suitable for housing retail functions than a theatre.
The traditional theatre program, which is presumably required for the Abbey, is pretty inflexible.
You’d probaly have to gut the building, just retain the facade and build a new theatre inside?

The museum could probably work as well, if it was really unsustainable for it to continue in its current use.

I agree. The reason why they are moving out of the present Abbey Theatre (remember, it was a new purpose built theatre) is because it is totally unsuitable today. The GPO would be totally unsuitable too unless it was totally gutted as has been said and appropriately redeveloped as a theatre. Although destroyed in the 1916 rebellion, the GPO would suffer total destruction for this idea of it’s development as a theatre.
It’s status as a post office is very apt, with maybe a museum to 1916 and that’s all.

Can kinda blame the late Tony Gregory and Charlie Haughey (and the Gregory deal that was done) for the demolishment of these Georgian buildings and their replacement with the awful ‘suburban style’ social housing.
OK, folk in the inner city were living in squalor in these fine old but decrepit buildings (aka tenements) of yesteryear and they needed new homes, but architectural appreciation went out the window, as it would in the hands of the culturally ignorant idiots Fianna Fail and Tony Gregory.

Their track records on understanding the architectural fabric, old and new, of Dublin City was appalling!

Hence we have Sean McDermott Street and Gardiner Street looking as they do today!

(Imagine something like that happening in Europe? ..Na, and any damage that was done there can be credited to the Luftwaffe and the RAF etc…. )

Just found this thread,i thought it would be a good idea to resurrect it 7 years later and see whats changed.

Since I posted the first of this thread, Dublin has gained really alot in comparison to Belfast. But now we are all up to our eye with the present credit crunch.

However, Dublin today surpasses Belfast in a lot of things.

We now have 2 modern stadia in Dublin while Belfast has none, but Belfast did have an offer of one.

We’ll have the new National Conference Centre gracing the Liffey as well as the O2 Point revamp to match the Waterfront Hall.

Belfast got the new Victoria Square shopping mall, but here in Dublin we have umpteen of them with more on the way for the city centre, ie …the Arnotts and Carlton Cinema developments. However the present credit crunch may stall them.

And Dublin got a new light rail system the LUAS as well as the Port Tunnel.

A few of the completed projects……

yep indeed, I meant that the glass cylinder atop of the building across the river is a reference to the glass cylinder of the NCC now finally being buit.

Aye indeed, and anyone notice too the glass cylinder atop of the building across the river. Although this building was built long before the NCC was even started I’m sure this was a reference to it.
