ParticipantGreat to see the ILAC centre being demolished on Parnell Street. Jesus, It was a horrendous building. Parnell Street is really taking shape here.
The new Jury’s Hotel is nearly finished too. I remember back in the 1980’s when this street was just one big surface level carpark. What a disgrace. It did not do the great man himself C. S. Parnell justice by being called after him.
However, pity about the east side of the street. It is in an awful condition. Quite tawdry and run down despite the hustle and bustle of people.
Dublin City Council should immediately address this as well as the historic Thomas Street which is in much the same state. Anyone ever see the condition of the buildings beside Vicar Street.
Ah, come on DCC, this is part of the tourist trail too. Wake up for god sake John Fitzgerald and address these problems immediately.GregF
ParticipantThe road widening schemes would have to be one of the major impacts made on the city as Craig Davis and Zap said….Whole streets were demolished and it took years for them to be rebuilt. This ruined many fine old streets that Dublin had and saw the loss of many familar landmarks. The evidence of such can still be seen today with the corners of many streets brutally lopped off as well as the makings of dual carriageways around.
Frank Feely and Co legacy!GregF
ParticipantThe County Hall down in Cork.

ParticipantBring back the Floozie in the Jacuzzi. Let’s have it remodelled and re-instated in this part of the street. It would help draw the crowds and add some life …….ahem!

Just imagine that Dublin Council made the announcement tomorrow morning that the Spire is to be taken down and dumped. What would the public reaction be?
I would say there would be uproar from all sections. And I bet there would be a lot more that 50% of Dubs sorry to see it go.….there’d be a bit of an uproar alright but it would fizzle out, I’d say. The lamentable ”floozie in the jacuzzi” has been totally forsaken by all. In hindsight, it was a good attraction and focal point in a way, despite it attracting the riff raff, drug peddalers, etc …. Would it be a good idea to have it re-modelled and re-instated again further up the street, which seems rather empty and bare?

Participant…..the sets of the film Michael Collins all been recreated up in the grounds of Grangegorman of course…..hence the way North Earl Street faced directly onto the GPO.

ParticipantIt would be very sad if Calatrava’s bridge is not built. Let’s hope it will and that we don’t get a cheaper and more plainer East Link styled bridge.

ParticipantPVC windows in period buildings with what should be sash windows are a curse.
However in Corpo houses they can look good as Graham said….providing they’re not too chunky or OTT with panels etc..GregF
ParticipantAnyone see the poor condition of the courthouse here in Kilmainham, beside the historic Gaol. It’s a f**king disgrace to put it bluntly. A period building that represents the law of the land: it’s main door daubed with graffitti and minus a letter box, it’s fine plasterwork interior decaying with damp and mould as the pigeons make a coop via the roof opening. Shame on the ”uppity” and ”cultured” judges who sit in judgement, but who never bleat a word of it’s neglected condition. Shame on the conservation groups too.
Gas all the furore about the proposed development across the road which has stalled …it remains a derelict site, an eyesore for all the tourists to see as they daily visit the Gaol.GregF
ParticipantThey look dreadful…………..level crossing barriers with lights

ParticipantAll the enthusiasm for O’Connell Street, but hold on to your horses folks. Has any one seen Henry Street lately. The £2 million makeover of this street just a few years back heralded the same optimism but since then the street has become rather shoddy. Anyone notice that the contemporary design steel bins that matched the lighting and banner masts have been replaced with the old black cast iron Victorian pastiche styled bins. Also has anyone one noticed the missing paving slabs in places due to roadworks. At the entrance to GPO arcade there is a large crater sloppily filled in with a dollop of tar. Will the same fate befall O’Connell Street. Dublin City Council is slacking.

ParticipantCharlie’s with the black and luminous yellow streaked frontage. There’s a couple of dives on Parliament Street too painted up in similar garish colours of lemon yellow and silver….colour blind or what!
GregF
ParticipantThey’re great photos Graham and Peter (the way they compare and contrast….etc)
I saw that dodgy tree on the GPO plaza which lost it’s leaves being replaced this morning.GregF
ParticipantAh yes,…. that’s that mad aul’ wan who talks about the birds and the beez on the radio. Will be good for the protection of the countryside no doubt…..but I dunno about in an urban sense.

ParticipantThe LUAS believe it or not had a brief career as an actor appearing as Darth Vader in the 1980’s Sci-Fi movie Dune.

ParticipantThe tree looks as if it suffered from the very warm weather we had a while back….a case of underwatering!
GregF
ParticipantThose images all look very nice ……..good renderings too

ParticipantTalking about new building facades unveiled as in DR. Quirkey’s ….anyone see the the former Virgin Megastore aka McBirneys which has just been unveiled too near O’Connell Bridge.
The Joyce House up on Usher Island looks good but it is minus it’s fanlight.
Also I was at Croker on Sunday and noticed that the new HIll 16 fits rather awkward up against the Cusack Stand. There is a gap between the two. Kinda looks shit really if it is to be left like this.
