ParticipantSee that the Waterfront Hall in Belfast has been awarded for being one of the best conferences centres in Europe, if not the world. We down south still lack a National Conference Centre. Foot dragging by governments have made us miss out. Like the National Stadium debacle this has gone on long enough. How about they commit themselves and have this much needed thing built. Spencer Dock has to be favourite for Kevin Roche’s proposal.

ParticipantI think in this instance it would be best to keep the original facade at least, and have it somewhat restored. A mansard roof could be applied to add height. It would continue the flow of the quays and have some connection with James Joyces Dublin. Obliterating the original building totally and replacing it with a banal mediocre infill is wrong. The architects must be ignorant half-wits who design with building templates.

ParticipantThe South Ciders and North Ciders advert is good. Bit farfetched to say that the bridge should be ripped down and a tunnel built so as just to see the reconstructed shell that is the Custom House. Instead, get Calatrava or the like in to remodel this part of the bridge. Would look good with an arch or somethig and fairy lights at night…more practical solution. The Dublin quays from Hueston Station to the Docklands in any way are really mediocre and unimpressive….really bland in other words. Bad example set here for the rest of the country.

ghastly, isn’t it?Jesus…..this is an awful concoction….the rendered image itself is absolutely terrible….it does’nt sell the development in any way. i don’t know how it got planning permission. Would have been better in this case to retain and restore at least the facade.

ParticipantSee the Stirling Prize programme on C4 on Sat? The best building won……pity it was’nt built in Dublin, what a great landmark.
See all the peasants decrying the Spire. We came across as really ignorant people, as the locals were asked what they thought of the Spire, all gave a negative response, especially too when the presenter mentioned that it was the IRA that blew up Nelson Pillar and the Baltic Exchange that paved the way for the Gherkin. Kinda Father Ted stuff!…..and I see that they have finally replaced the plonk of tar crater on Henry Street at the GPO arcade with the proper paving slabs. Wow!

ParticipantAh Jasus, whoever painted those railings definitely must have been colour blind or something. They should’nt be aloud out unattended!

ParticipantBut ye have to admit the front yard of Tailor ‘s Hall that faces onto High Street is a bloody disgrace.

ParticipantI think maybe too if the building facade was given a bit of a cleaning, it might not look as bad.

ParticipantThis bridge simply needs remodelling to enhance the environment and vistas……Ok, it functions grand but we need the dress designers in to tart it up.

ParticipantI remember this scheme (Georges Quay) was first pilloried by all when it was announced that the developer would build it instead of a plan by SOM. They were labeled the portals of darkness if I’m not mistaken. The right decision was chosen in the end I suppose, as this scheme fits in well here. Of all the new buildings that have been developed in the docklands this one in particular, a design from the early 1990’s, has been used on numerous occasions in adverts etc. See it in the RTE promo too where slabs of the Giant’s Causway are transformed into the sparkly pryamid towers. Probably a sad reflection too on what has generally been built down the docks, when a kinda quirky design from the 1980’s/ 1990’s grabs all the attention today.

ParticipantThey are really great photos……got any more of the city?
I think everyone now appreciates the O’Connell Street makeover despite all the hoo haa by the disgruntled at the start. That old story about the waste of 4 million on the Spire and what about the homeless seems to be forgotton.

ParticipantAh there’s some truth in stereotypes…..we may complain about our stage Oirish potrayal in films, books, music etc…whether it be The Commitments, Father Ted, Ballykissangel, etc…. (As Jasus, we’re not like bleedin’ dat ) but when it all boils down, it is probably how we generally appear to the rest of the world…ie Dana, Jackie Healy Rae, Bertie Ahern, Colin Farrell etc……
(Anyone see Hector last night interviewing Bertie Ahern. Hector came across as an irritating culchie gombeen, even more so when in Paris, whilst our Taoiseach came across as the stuttering dithering Dub he is)…… Ah sure it was great craic!
Hop on a 78A bus and ye’ll know what I mean.GregF
ParticipantAye ……it’s the being built by Fusano properties.

ParticipantIs’nt all this area of the city in a pityful condition.
Look at the rubbish on the left in the picture, the shed masquerading as a city building.
Bargaintown should be prosecuted for the shoddy condition of their premises along the Liffey as well.GregF
ParticipantOverall though The HARP project has really transformed this whole area of the city for the better. Jesus, this area, North King Street, etc.. was one big unforgivable eyesore.

ParticipantI’m a bit sceptical of this O’Connell Street improvement/maintenance plan…..one only has to look, as I’ve said before, at the condition of Henry Street which got a 2 million pounds makeover only a few years back. Already it looks shoddy in places …the paving damaged and the original contemporary steel bins which were part of the makeover plan have been removed, only to be replaced with the old cast iron pastiche ones, adding inconsistency. Will O’Connell Streeet follow the same fate of half heartedness.

ParticipantWell done Mickeydocs & Co….well how about the Eurovision then….for Millstreet of course again?

ParticipantI don’t think it would be possible at the moment to stage anything of major sporting importance here, realistically speaking. We are too lethargic and lack optimistic vision. Our facilities are Zilch! If money were to be spent on such projects the bleeding heart brigade would be complaining about lack of hospital beds, the homeless, the buses, the weather etc….(Maybe we should complain about the cost of bringing the pope here on his second potential tour) While the staging of the disabled Olympics was a great success and credit to all involved, however I don’t think the hosting of other major sporting events is viable. The GAA are too cloth headed and clannish, The FAI and the Rugby shower are too amateurish. I mean, we don’t even have a national stadium, yet alone a winning Olympic team. I could’nt imagine hosting anything with our fellow Irish Unionisit brethern. I would imagine that they would be so disagreeable as with everything else. Although it is a great concept.
Stay drinking in the pubs people …encourage your kids to do the same too, It’s what Ireland is all about and sure we’ll fix it tomorrow,…………….if the weathers good!GregF
ParticipantAye …it’s that Victorian ensemble in the middle of the road near the quayside
